In the 1890s, businessman Julius H. Block made a series of recordings on wax cylinders in Moscow. The recordings where though to be lost until the early 2000's when they where rediscovered and made into CD's. To today's standards, the recording quality is very poor, however the cylinders where well taken care of and sound much better than the famous 1889 Brahms recoding. The performance is cut short because of time limitations of the cylinder.

I hope you enjoy this interesting little recording :)

There's a reason why Pabst was so respected as a pianist in the conservatory. He was the teacher of fantastic pianist-composer Medtner and arranged several Tchaikovsky works. He was respected by some of the leading musicians of his time such as Rubinstein.

This is the best format for highlighting and respecting historical recordings and piano rolls. They're hard to listen to normally, but with the sheet music, it brings it back to life. Thank you!

Such recordings are extremely important for understanding the performance practices of the Romantic era. The style of today tends to be slow, strict, and metrical, with both hands in exact synchronization, which is fine; but--if not wrong--it would probably sound quite strange to Chopin if he could hear it this way. Notice that Pabst here almost always rolls chords, and alters the tempo dramatically in sections depending on context. To do so today would be unacceptable.

Can we translate the spoken comment at 3:25 -- "... Chopin, gespielt am 12. Februar 1895, von mir, ..."

This might be the earliest recording of a Chopin nocturne.
