Netherton Canal Tunnel
In this episode I visit one of the longest active canal tunnels in the UK. At 2,768 metres in length it takes us almost an hour to walk through. Shafts, wet feet and darkness lit up with amazing brightness awaits.
Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal, in the West Midlands, England, is part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations (BCN). It was constructed at a 453-foot elevation, the Wednesbury or Birmingham Level; it has no locks. The total length of the branch canal is 2.4 miles (3.9 km) and the canal tunnel is 9,081 feet (2,768 m) long.

Thanks for this contribution, saves me having to do it. Came accross Netherton tunnel following OS maps for the Monarchs way walk (dont know why MW goes through here as it wasnt built till 200 years after future Charles 2 escape from the battle of worcester. I didn't have torch with me and got about 200 yards in, waited for eyes to adjust, but they wouldn't, sound of water running into canal, potholes underfoot and impenetrable dark, I came out and walked over the top. Thanks again,.don't think I'll be going back, even with wellies and several spare torches.

Wow that is one spooky tunnel! Very eerie can you imagine walking through at night? Remarkable engineering though, The victorians were very good at building tunnels, Thanks for the tour Ant,❤😊

I've been through it on a bike at night. Not really much different because it's dark whatever! You just can't see the ends. I already knew the tunnel well so I knew how far it was to the end by looking at markings along the tunnel

Went through there on my bike a few months ago just using my phone for light which is not recommended. towpath was very waterlogged and uneven but it was an experience. thanks for the vid as i didnt have chance to take in the view as too busy trying to hang on :).

The Metal things above you in the wall was for the lighting system that was removed in the 60s, Was gas lit, then electric lights powered by a small turbine where the canal runs down to the lower canal where you started. The repairs in 1983 and i think again where in 2015ish where due to the tunnel compressing the canal base and forcing it up

Interesting. I did wonder if it would have been lit. Must have been pretty dark by lamplight.

I think the metal plates are distances in chais. For example 45 chains is just over 900 meters...

I lived on the Lost City in Tipton, walked through this tunnel many many times as a kid, back then there was a lot of the railing missing, so you clang to the wall, making a right mess of your coot, my dog fell in once about half way through and i had to grope around to pull him back out, great days.

Ant, Wonderfull to see, I walked through in the mid 1970s, waited for a boat and kept up with that as it never occured to me to take a torch. This was at the time that the Dudley Tunnel was re-opened so there was plenty of traffic for the opening bash. I recall that the towpath was very puddly but not flooded like now. In those days I think the otjher towpath was the route of choice. Those brackets in the roof are the remains of the lighting that existed up until the eraly 1950s, I believe.

Yes, the other towpath used to actually be the better one up until 2007 when the waterways trust decided to repair the towpath that is open today, put in some nice smooth concrete sections of path and close the other. The old path was very bumpy with massive ruts in it. I used to ride my mountain bike through there and I could clear the repaired towpath in 10 minutes in 2007. I actually timed it on a bike computer! Today, i'm not sure how long it would take but conditions have deteriorated a lot and I wouldn't be surprised if the path collaspses soon with that amount of water...

I cycled through this yesterday, in the opposite direction. It is rideable if you have a very good light to illuminate the water-filled potholes. It wasn't flooded, though, perhaps because it hasn't really rained for 2 or 3 weeks. It was an experience!

Lovely video, nice to see it with a bit more light. Pity they have closed the other side again. A few years ago (probably after the tweaks circa 2015) the opposite path was open, I remember walking that side and coming back on the path you took. That opposite side was a lot wetter and much more uneven than the one you walked so I can understand it being shut again. The "gunge" as you called it just looks that way since it is smooth and wet but are actually a rock hard mineral deposits. Some nice colourful formations in that tunnel. The orange deposits are actually iron-oxide (rust) not copper. The whole reason for the canals in the area was because it was rich in both coal and iron. The deposits come from remaining iron leaching from the ground.

great vid yet again well done markers I think are surveying used 80 chains to aa mile / 100 links in a chain just short of 8 inches from memory . recesses on tow path for large objects passing during construction and the likes of horses in my opinion, early tunnels normally built narrow for using planks and mem to leg push the boats
@twistagain1964
@twistagain1964 2 года назад
Yes this tunnel was built because the nearby and parallel Dudley tunnel created a bottle neck as it was narrow and required legging through causing severe delays in its heyday.

Did you find anyone to report that dummy to? That could have really spoiled someone's day, especially if they bumped it with a boat. Even nowadays, most boats wouldn't have nearly as much light available as your death ray. I wonder what George and Jane were up to. If they're scared of boats, they've maybe been trying for days, weeks even, to get to the far end. I wonder if they flew part of the way through. Strange; London pigeons have sussed-out how to use the tube but these two haven't the wit to fly 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 the tunnel. There's maybe some fancy algy, or insects, only found in the tunnel. Interesting trip, as always Ant. I took a narrowboat through there once but it's interesting to see it all lit up. Thanks for taking us along.👍

I know it was the last canal tunnel built but the construction seems in keeping with railway tunnels of the era. I wonder, did they design it with a possible view to converting it to rail use? Would it explain the recesses in the side? The canal was dead straight - again, ideal to easily transfer it to rail should it be needed. Obviously that never happened. Just a pondering.
@TrekkingExploration
@TrekkingExploration 2 года назад
I wonder if it was taken into account that some kind of motor / engine may be developed in the future as it was? If that was abandoned and dry, towpath aside you'd think it was for a railway wouldn't you?
