UAE's team performance was very impressive. They could have easily thrown in the towel after Almeida's abandonment and continued the Vuelta as passengers but instead, they planned and executed an audacious long-range attack, which brought Yates back into the GC mix.

I’ve ridden tour and vuelta routes. The Vuelta descents are way scarier. There is something extra challenging about the roads in the Vuelta. When Horner won that Vuelta it was a monster win. Surviving those roads on top of beating the competition is beyond impressive. World Class Spanish riders who rode those routes since 12 year olds are trying to beat you. I’m not sure people appreciate what it took to win that Vuelta. Epic. Let alone Basque Country. My Txapela is off to you ! If I had one 😅

Man had Mas turn up MY heartrate at that moment... What a save! I made an almost similar move earlier that day when I was surprised by a cyclist coming from my right who I didn't see. I braked too hard with my front brake and did a stoppie (back wheel came up) I got a huge cramp in my quad trying not to fall over which I had to walk off for a few minutes. Luckily I was going very slowly.. I can not imagine what it must have been like going 75+ km/h

Rafferty dropping back to assist just like Powless did for Carapaz's TDF stage win, and highlight reels saying he was dropped by the break. Glad you caught it; intent should have been obvious. Mas scared the sh!t out of me, and Tiberi gets heat stroke. I've had it, and watched someone almost die from it. Epic but scary stage; after seeing Yate's crash earlier this year didn't expect much but still awesome to see him get the stage.
@PeroPierson
@PeroPierson 18 дней назад
I have another perspective on this stage. It looks to me the Red Bull Bora DSs are like the Jumbo ones at Giro 2019. It seems to me they are not on the level they should be, making wrong decisions etc...first letting all this breaks go, with always the wrong riders in them and letting them get 6+minutes. IPT yesterday has brought the brake back at the end, but Red Bull never did with any brake at this race. The team was no protecting Primoz when he fall at the Tour, here they let a brake with Oconnor gain so much time...yesterday by the way Roglic said that at the finish line he didnt knew what his position was, so never tried to sprint it. Actually it didnt look cooked to me in the end, he had the second best time on the last climb (behind Mas), he looked more in pain because of his back. He is a rider who never speak about his problems, but he has mentioned that he has quite some pain in the back, so hopefully they could get him back on track with it, as there are so many oportunities in week 2 and I really hope the DSs starts to draw the right decisions.

Picking you brain here, Chris...any thoughts on the number of wheel lockups we're seeing, (can't remember seeing this many, perhaps my skewed perception of it) such as Ben O'Conner the other day...diving into a reducing radius turn, acute angle on the front wheel and he locked up...if this is brake related, main question relates to the ability to 'feather' the brakes with disc versus rim ...is the perceived 'feel' better with one or the other ? Still riding rim brakes back here in NY .. many thanks in advance if you're able to reply...

I think that Visma Lease-A-Bike should change their focus from the general classification and focus more on keeping Wout in the green jersey. I'm also wondering why so many cyclists keep dropping their chains. I've never dropped a chain while cycling so I don't understand why it happens during the race. Is it something to do how a professional road bike is put together or something with how professional cyclists shift gears, etc.?
@ChrisHornerCycling
@ChrisHornerCycling 18 дней назад
Good question. The chain drops more often because of the aggressive riding the pros are putting on the bike during the race. Our bikes never have an issue at home either. If you go out and drive your car super fast you will see how the brakes need to be replaced very soon and the tires are worn out and the transmission won’t last 200k. 🦋👊

Thanks Chris, that was a monumental stage. Hopefully it was was just one bad day for Primoz Roglic. Clearly the huge effort of winning yesterday took it out and uncharacteristically he has not recovered quickly with overnight rest, but then Primoz is 34 yrs old and in the 2024 peloton that’s an elder statesman. Yates redeemed himself in his own eyes after a bad start (his post race interview was quite emotional) and now has a decent chance at winning in Madrid if, 1) he keeps a consistent form and, 2) Roglic does not regain his full form

That TOPS even Jacob Fuglesang's LBL save!!! 😮😮😮 Queen Stage update... BO'C EXTENDS his lead..... not bad for a rider who according to one of our fellow chesterfieldians has ZERO % chance of winning, with a near 4 min lead! I still think it's going to be difficult for him to win, but to say he has 0% with a 4 min lead is absurd! In fact he now has possibly has a better chance as there are more riders willing to ride to cover their positions, so it won't be only down to him chasing Roglic. Also Re Felix Gall riding away in the last 500M of the previous stage, I disagree, when the road is that steep, the chances of a mechanical issue increase, so Gall pulling 15 seconds out of BO'C is hardly significantly protecting his own GC position, but may be significant if those 15 seconds (or even more if he'd had a mechanical!) become essential for Red. #1 rule of TBE....Don't leave your leader, especially when so much at stake. 👊🦋🚴❤

Really that was it. I would have to add mad respect for O’Conner for adding 4 second bonus on a day we expected him to loose time and yes good save from mas, does he mountain bike? Either way love how this race is going, favorite 🤔🤷‍♂️ who knows who will win All good , probably Primos and if so he will deserve it.

Losing a corner, at speed, is not a nice feeling. Since I've never done racing like this, the Vuelta, I can only speak about criteriums ... Raining during this criterium, peloton all stretched out and at speed. Halfway on a straight part, I feel my rear tub slowly flatting. I can't make that upcoming corner! Braking was not an option ... I slammed into the barriers, bicycle racks you call them I believe, abd since they're all hooked together, they toppled over a bit and bounced back throwing me on the road. Id hit that barrier with my right hand, the base of my nose, cheekbone and my upper lip had a cut. Back to my car, changed clothing, off to the hospital in Rotterdam to get stitches in that lip. While i was there i remembered my good friend Gerard was there. Hrd had a nasty crash in a criterium two days before, broke a collarbone and had had surgery. Good time to visit him! 😁

After watching all three grand tours this year, vuelta seem very different. It seems to me that the absence of a really strong team in vuelta that would control the race from the start to the end (such as UAE nad VLAB) makes the race lmuch ess predictable and therefore more exciting to watch. Would a change of a rule (maybe less riders allowed in a team) perhaps lessen the impact of team strength and level the competition?

Roglic now has to worry as much about the group behind him now as O'connor in front and it still stems back to the day they let O'Connor go; this will go down to the wire unless we have some more twists ???

Doesn't look like Decathlon AG2R or Red Bull have got the domestiques to control the break like a Nils Pollit or Christophe Laporte. Who seriously gives a gap like that to Adam Yates, you can only assume there's just not enough watts in the peleton 🤷

IMO.. Yates has been sandbagging so far, in order to set up an attack like today! No coincidence, it occurred the day after Almeida abandons.. stragedy?.. if Almeida was still racing, this attack would have been lethal to Primoz, and Almeida would have overtaken him on GC!🤔
@mattpotter8725
@mattpotter8725 18 дней назад
Almeida abandoned today, it was the day Almeida didn't appear at the start. If Almeida had started today he'd have been so far behind the start he'd have been no threat as he lost all his time yesterday due to having COVID. I think what you're trying to say is if yesterday hadn't the way it did and Almeida was healthy and if he had been able to go with the attacks he'd be in a great position. A lot of ifs there!!!

Another epic fail from Bora . First they let half of UAE in the breakaway to build up to 6 minutes on the peleton and then Dani Martinez and Vlasiv blow up before the final climb even starts; only way Roglic wins Vuelta is on his own

It was a very odd stage to watch without any time gaps after a while and no TV camera on Carapaz!!! Made it a mystery what exactly situation was. Great to watch though. Felt bad for Mas but he just isn't a great descender even on a good day on a fast, wide, great surface of a road.

I followed the time gaps on La Vuelta website... following the "live" race. That's also how I knew what was going on once the cameras switched on.
@mattpotter8725
@mattpotter8725 18 дней назад
@@user-tb7rk2nb6s Sure you can do that, but over never watched a stage where they just didn't have the gaps on the screen at all. I get it was a mountains stage, and may have been difficult but they did have cameras with the peleton and those at the front of the race so even if they'd just had those 2, which on the Vuelta is sometimes all you get, I'd have been fine. If the times were available though why weren't they on the screen as usual?
@mattpotter8725
@mattpotter8725 18 дней назад
@@ChrisHornerCycling Thanks for this Chris, I did think that this would be possible but it's a pain in the ass and takes away from the enjoyment of watching the action doing that I feel. If the times were available, and I can only assume with the permission of the Vuelta, why couldn't they use this. Maybe it was a technical issue, some system crashed and couldn't be resurrected on the day, but I've often seen the Vuelta not having the time gaps to the important riders in the race on a stage. This time they went one step further and didn't have any, except from time to time, which was equally odd and the time gaps given, especially to Carapaz were questioned by the commentators. Even if they'd just had an explanation for why this was, maybe a number of the motorbike riders were sick due to COVID and they just didn't have the manpower to be able to do it, it'd still not have been great but I'd have been happier, these things happen. I've often wondered about the way they calculate the time gaps and I think they did talk about this once on the Breakaway, that a motorcyclist stops from the group in front and times it with a stopwatch, which seems awfully old school to me. Surely each rider, unless they change bikes, had a transponder on the bike and it should be able to be calculated from this. That said in a mountain stage like this one doing it using this method might not work, although there must be a way around this. Either way it was a bizarre experience, even if the racing was great. Felt a bit bad for Mas, he made the break, got a minute up the road, but with that near disastrous, potentially race ending incident, he may have gained time on Roglic. I was wondering if you were going to call him a knucklehead for this move considering the distance from the final climb to the finish and the likelihood that he'd not have anyone to help him pull to the line and ask this time would evaporate as it did, even if not to the extent it did. The GC group did seem to bring back a lot of time over Yates, Carapaz, and Mas in that final 10-20km.
