In this fly tying tutorial, Cheech ties one of the most legendary nymphs ever, The Copper John. The Copper John really needs no introduction. It is among the most popular names in the world and has caught Trout almost everywhere. Designed by legendary fly tyer John Barr, it can be found in almost every fly shop in any corner of the world. One of the biggest mysteries of this fly is getting a nice even taper on the body so on this video, we made a lot of effort to show you how to do this. Make sure to tie them in various sizes and colors and run them under your favorite big dry fly.

What would be the adjustments on the materials for a size 16? I.E. size the bead, wire, UNI soft-wire, and tinsel down 1 size?

C’mon Cheech, please tie your beard into a fly and pretend you haven’t noticed. Then the camera guy can come on screen and trim it off. That would be hilarious! Oh, nice copper John.

Awesome tie, as usual… but I think you forgot to edit out the part where Cheech got up and had a convo with (presumably) the camera guy off-screen? Spence? That’s OK.. it’s like when I’m fishing with a guide and I ask him/her to show me… and they get a cast stuck in a tree… validation that we’re all human! :)

I’ve never understood why trout like the copper body. There is nothing in nature that even comes close to looking like that. Perhaps fish ignore that part and focus on the peacock herl and shape of the fly. Nice tying.

As the fly goes down through the depths of the water column, sunlight penetrates less and less, different light wave frequencies penetrate deeper into the water, you loose the reds, oranges, pinks, yellows first, followed by greens, blues and finally purples penetrate the deepest, this has a small effect on the perceived color of the Copper. Water color and particles suspended in the water will greatly affect what color the copper looks to be. To get an idea of what color the fish might see the copper to be, put the fly into water of the same shade and particle density and shine a UV light on the fly. You'll get a rough idea of what the fish see....sorta. But its a good start =) Incidentally this is also why fish will gladly take a blue or purple fly even though nothing in their environment looks like those colors.

Same thing just opt for tungsten on a size 16 or 14 hanak hook and use a little heavier wire for fast sink rate.
