The Fairey Rotodyne was a large compound gyroplane which attempted to mix elements of fixed and rotary wing flight for a transport aircraft capable of vertical or short take offs.
Join me on the workbench today as I take a look inside the box of the Airfix Vintage Classic Fairey Rotodyne in 1/72 scale (A04002V) to see what this old but interesting model kit is like!

I will say, AirFix customer support is top notch. I had an issue, no question, no fuss, they took care of it. Had an issue with a Flyhawk kit, the seller blew me off, the manufacturer offered to sell me a replacement kit for the same price I paid for the original kit. 😂 AirFix has cemented me as a customer for life. Flyhawk… will be situational.

Over the past couple of years I have purchased model kits with parts missing from the sprue, which is something I had never experienced in the 40+ years I have been in this hobby. First was the grille from a Revell Shelby Mustang GT350H, and the second was the dashboard from the new 43rd scale E-Type Jaguar from Airfix. Thankfully customer service from both companies was excellent and I was able to get the parts in question without any hassle.

Hi Matt,I picked up their 1/48 Stuka,and their 1/48 Gloster meteor FR.9,as I went to the national flight museum in Scotland and they seem to be pretty good kits,as expected from Airfix,and the museum is a nice little place for any Aviation enthusiast or anyone interested in military history :)

It is a very interesting aircraft. I was given this kit by a friend back in the mid 80's which was old when I got it. I only built it about 5 years ago some parts didn't fit very well and the decals were very fragile but I got away with it. I also left the main rotor blades detachable so i could remove them for transportation when i moved house. It did turn out fairly well though.
@ModelMinutes

Leaving the rotor blades removeable was a good idea! I didn't think about that and can imagine having problems with storage

Good review. Given the size of the kit it seems a reasonable price even with the quality issues. Mine has bent prop blades. Planning on building mine soon. Dealing with customer issues must be costing them money so improving QC would balance out and we would be confident in getting a complete kit. I have had whole frames missing with another frame duplicated.

Great video! About the lack of the interior - it's realistic. It, being a prototype, didn't have an interior. Just an empty tube.

Hiya Matt.. great review :) In his unboxing review Gary Evans had the same issue as you with the propeller blades, although in his case it was both propellers and they were bent not missing. He made the point that with modern sprues fragile parts like propellers would be inside an outer frame so they couldn't hit the box and break / bend. Mind you although yours was in the bag, it does look like a factory accident and should IMHO have been discarded not despatched. The scuffs on another sprue do look like someone was clumsy - maybe the propeller was damaged in the same incident. WRT the stripes.. 'Paint or decals? That is the question. Whether to..' no OK I ran out of ideas *lol*
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 2 месяца назад
Yeah, Mos also had the same problem with his props too. Having built the model I think that painting the stropes might be easier in some respects - especially with lining them up with the windows as I had issues there
@julianmhall
@julianmhall 2 месяца назад
@@ModelMinutes Agreed. I was thinking mask the windows and paint the stripes. The only thing I think probably would need decals is the lettering.

Hello, interesting view. Given this was a prototype only, its quite possible that there wasn't much of an interior for Airfix to copy at the time, perhaps just test gear. Then again interiors were unusual in those days. Implementing closing/openning gear doors to go with the retractable gear might be an interesting challenge. If you are interested, the remains of this aircraft are at the helicopter museum at Weston Super Mare. Their web site shows a view and also a Fairey marketing video which might give some ideas. The tip motors were Ram Jets and a bit (lot) noisey.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 2 месяца назад
It is my understanding that although this was a prototype, in order to gain interest in sales an internal seating area/cargo space would have been present to give a good demonstration to potential buyers what the capability of the aircraft could be. I feel as though omitting the internal details was just the "style" at the time and possibly a cost saving method. The tip jets were powered by compressed air provided by the engines (similar to how the Harrier would control it's flight in the hover) and not "ram jets" as such - a ram jet typically requiring the compression of fast moving air and a fuel to compress and ignite a self-sustaining thrust
@emmabird9745

@@ModelMinutes Hi Matt. Thank you very very much, you have provoked me to do some research on an aircraft I hadn't paid enough attention to in the past. This reply has taken a while because speed reading is not my thing. With regards to the cabin I was right for the first half of its life in that it was a bare cabin with flight test instrumentation/recorders in it. You were at least half right (a bit more than that really) in that just before its appearance at the Farnborough air show the rear half of the cabin was fitted out with seats (20) and sound proofing "to an airline standard". I think the front half was reserved for the flight test stuff for ongoing work. I would say that the modeller who wishes to model a cabin might do well to look at cabin interiors of the time (BEA was to be the launch customer so thats a place to start) say in the Viscounts and Vanguards. On the tip jets, you are again at least half right, They were not ram jets, but side entry pressure jets using compressed air from the engine driven pumps (one engine supplying blades 1 and 3, the other engine supplying blades 2 and 4 giving a redundancy in the event of an engine failure) mixed with kerosene fuel fed down the leading edges. Whilst they were initially spun up with just the compressed air, take of required the fuel feed. The Harrier manoeuvre jets are purely engine bleed compressed air. The nearest analog that I can suggest for these tip jets is it is like a single combustion can from a turbo jet without the turbine. And yes they were very noisey at 110db at 500ft away!! Thats ear defender levels these days. I feel very chasened but thank you for, albeit indirectly, introducing me to research what was a very interesting concept. Its a shame it was scrapped so abruptly (a short sighted ministry decision) because it had such promise and the noise issue might have been solved in 10 years or so afterward. I don't go much for "what if" builds but I might make an exception in this case, perhaps a secondary airline loading cargo (the aircraft was designed with that role in mind as well and it bypasses the seats issue).

Decent and fair review. However, if Airfix is going to charge premium prices for regurgitated kits then they need to get their quality control in check. You are not the first reviewer to have broken parts. That is unacceptable. With a little bit of care when inspecting and packaging the parts this problem could be eliminated.

lol yeah, what I think Neil is more referring to is that £20 today seems expensive when you could probably pick it up for like 60p back in the 60's. Of course, 60p back then probably has the same buying power as £20 today, so realistically prices haven't actually "gone up" just their purchasing power has gone down
