This japanese shaker writing desk is inspired by a classic writing desk from the shaker time period, as well as the Japanese vertical castle joint known as jyuji mechigai tsugi. This shaker writing desk build or wooden desk build is chock full of technique, such as how to cut half blind dovetails by hand, through dovetails, and the aforementioned Japanese joint. While not a traditional writing desk or writing desk build, this dovetail desk draws inspiration from @Jon Peters - Longview Woodworking and Dylan Iwakuni, utilizing concepts from an entryway table, as well as a directly learned Japanese joint. This video could also serve as a tutorial on how to build a small vanity desk, as it's got similar size and stature. Shaker furniture is marked by its minimalist design with subtle, even invisible embellishments, and solid construction. Therefore, this small desk build demonstrates how to build shaker furniture, but with a modern flair and a bit of a break from tradition, with contrasting wood and bolder embellishments. This desk is going in my tiny office which makes it one of a many great small desk ideas for small spaces. Although not necessarily a diy desk build with drawers, this Japanese desk build demonstrates how to build a writing desk with drawers, utilizing no drawer hardware, and more of the piston fit style, known in fine furniture. At the end of the day, I hope this video doesn't just show how to build a simple writing desk or how to make a desk with drawers, but how to build a desk of out of wood, hardwoods that will stand the test of time and be an heirloom piece for yours or someone else's home. Be sure to comment below if you have any questions or if you've made a similar desk.

Wow my mind is spinning from all the technical woodworking terms you just threw at me, what an incredibly detailed build and video, the table is beautiful and the joinery is rock solid man 🤘

Ah it ain’t THAT technical. 😉 but glad you liked it. This is definitely one of those builds where you could dial it back and make something a lot simpler.

The Jon peters version of this as an entry table is joined entirely with pocket holes... and it doesn’t have a funky hand cut Japanese timber framing joint. So there’s that. 😂

Your work is so clean. I can’t catch everything thing your saying for the recipe you use for your finish on this piece. Do you mind replying with with a recipe? I would like to try it out sometime :)

Hey aria! Thank you for the compliment it means a lot. So the finish is two stage. Stage one is equal parts boiled linseed oil, pure tung oil, and satin wipe on poly (arm r seal also works), with a splash of mineral spirits. None of these measurements have to be exact. Stage two is pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, and beeswax in equal parts. Stage two has to be incorporated together so you’ll have to do a double boiler on the stove to get the parts integrated with each other. For a less protective finish, but one that’s easier to apply, you can skip stage two and just apply paste wax.

Excellent work Chris! I can really appreciate your detail work. How do you sharpen your plane and chisel irons? Those shavings are woodworker porn for sure. Also, how about a video with the finishes you used in this project, I noticed you used two different ones...
@CowDogCraftWorks
@CowDogCraftWorks 4 года назад
Hey man! So it’s a two stage finish, not necessarily two different finishes. Stage one is blend equal parts boiled linseed oil, pure tung oil, and wipe on poly with a dash of mineral spirits over the top. Stage two is linseed, tung, and melted beeswax. I’ll apply coats of the first stage until it’s visibly an even sheen. Usually will take a couple of days. It’s a wipe on and wipe off process. Then the wax coat is applied and rubbed off in a buffing motion. It’s kind of my go-to finish.
