Back in 1960 a friend had a 56 Ford with a 312 and overdrive. As I remember, you pulled the T handle out if you wanted to use the OD. Once you got over 27 mph you just let up on the gas and when you gave it the gas again it would be in OD. If you wanted to pass another car or came to a hill, you pushed the gas pedal all the way down and the OD disengaged until you eased up on the gas. If you didn't want to use the OD you pushed the T handle back in. We got curious one night and wanted to see if the OD would work in the other gears, so we tried it and found it did. Those OD trannys were fun. Wish I had one in my 65 Galaxy.

I used to have a '50 Ford and I bought a 3 spd with over drive transmission for it as it only came with a standard 3 speed. I never managed to get the job done but the over drive was operated with a cable and also had the electrical solenoid that would keep in it gear. Even back in the '70s those solenoids were hard to come by but I was told that a Studebaker solenoid would work. The over drive would stay engaged in all gears until you manually took it out of over drive.

The OD cable is to lock it out but not while driving. If you want use OD. Push the cable in. Drive the car as usual tnrough 3rd gear. Letti g off the accelerator will engage the OD gear for better mileage. There's probably a kick down switch under the accellerator.

I feel I must comment after reading all the posts about the OD system. I have a 1970 f100 with this set up. With the handle pulled OUT the transmission operates like a normal three speed. With the handle pushed IN the OD is ready to function. Under acceleration and at 28 mph let up on the throttle and the overdrive system will engage the overdrive gear. It’s easy to get OD in 2nd and 3rd gear , I’ve gotten it to engage in 1st gear a few times but you’re really revving the engine. With the handle IN and under deceleration you will have the help of the gears holding back until you hit the magic 28 mph and it will disengage and free wheel with no gear resistance. This is a problem parking the vehicle with the handle IN as there’s no gear resistance to hold it while parked, you must set the parking brake or it WILL roll away. I run mine with the handle OUT in town and while parking and push the handle in for highway driving if I want the OD. On the highway if you want to pass a vehicle push the gas pedal to the floor and it will kick out of OD and into third gear feeling like an automatic transmission kicking down, after the pass leave up on the gas pedal and the system will return to OD gear. I really enjoy driving it. I always run with the handle OUT in town to hear the dual glass pack exhaust under deceleration. As far as the wiring I’d recommend a wiring schematic for proper hookups. I know mine has a fused relay on the firewall and the solenoid on the transmission, I’ve never had to do any work on it and it’s as it was new. My dad bought the truck new in 1970 and I still have it. Original paint , interior , engine and transmission, 58,000 original miles. I’m not claiming to be an expert or anything , just wanted to share my little piece of knowledge / experience about how mine works.

I haven’t read all the comments but get the service manual for the car. I have AMCs and they used the same Borg Warner overdrive. It is pretty easy to diagnose when it is hooked up correctly. You will need the throttle switch as part of the wiring harness.

The cable shifts the sun gear in or out of the planet carrier in the OD gears. Cable out and the sun gear is slid into the planet carrier and the OD geartrain is locked. With the cable pushed in, the sun gear is free to turn and OD can operate. Electrically, there should be a relay and fuse probably on the firewall. This supplies power to the solenoid. The ground for the solenoid is supplied by the governor once speed is over about 28 mph. There is also a kickdown circuit with a switch under the throttle pedal (or on the linkage). If you are cruising in OD, flooring the throttle pedal will allow you to drop back to normal third gear. Letting up on the throttle will allow the transmission to shift back into OD. Almost any Ford service before maybe 66, will have the schematic for the wiring. Since it doesn't presently work, you will get "free wheeling" when you let off the gas (OD lever pushed in). That means that there will be no engine braking when you let up on the throttle. Pulling the lever out will give you engine braking. However, the only time you should pull the lever out is with the vehicle setting still. Pulling the lever out with the vehicle moving will cause damage to the planetary gears in the OD.
@westcoasttractionsupply5224
@westcoasttractionsupply5224 6 месяцев назад
Pulling the overdrive cable out locks the transmission OUT of overdrive. When operating normally, the electrical OD relay energizes around 30 mph via a governor on the trans, and getting off the pedal for a second will allow the OD to automatically engage into high range. There should be a button under the gas pedal or on the linkage somewhere that will interrupt the ignition for a split second when you floor the gas to allow the OD to drop back into direct drive.

Ive had a number of those 3 speed od units they work either manual cable or auto electric, 6v solenoid, and the govenor is the ground, there should be a switch under the gas pedal, that is a kick down from od to direct drive, most of the switching on old cars and trucks are ground switches, likely a .7 od, great for gas mileage, the only way to adjust the govenor is on the road 1/8 turn with a small screwdriver to sneak up on the adjustment. When the governors centrifuge spins out it will ground the circuit and the solenoid will engage or disengage. Not a complicated system just a touchy adjustment.

I have a couple of 59 fords with od, one has the t-86 borg-warner like your car. The wire that was un-kooked the 2 with connectors go to the solenoid, the 3rd wire goes to the governor. There should be a kick-down switch and a OD relay on the firewall. I would leave the cable pulled out until all those things are hooked up Never push the od handle in when you are coasting or you will hear grinding

Wish i could help with the car but not knowing much about the O/D...Wanted to address the Coyote..sometimes things are better left alone..for some odd reason the Coyote's were introduced into our area back about 20 or so years ago..don't know why they were brought here as i never heard of them being on any kind of endangered species list..we never had them as i remember growing up..But these animals have devastated our wildlife..no more rabbits or much of any of the creatures that once graced our woods..We hear them at night yipping ..sounding like little puppies and these animals just multiply like crazy..they serve no purpose that i know of but will attack and kill cats and your outdoor pets or livestock if they have no shelter or if you don't take measures to protect them..trapping will help but not rid them from your area it will just thin the herd..also for hikers..You need to be mindful that if they are cornered they will fight..always best to take a hiking stick at the very least..It's a shame that people will introduce animals like these into an area that serve no helpful purpose and that have this type of aggressive reputation..It happens all the time though and with other creatures like fish and even plants..some times we need to leave Mother nature alone and stop trying to control her by introducing animals into habitats that never had them before..

I don’t know how you injured your leg/foot. But it’s great to see you out of that boot!! I fell and spiral fractured my right fibula and 4th metatarsal 7/4/23. I’m still going to physical therapy. I had to return back to work 12 hr days standing and walking 10/12/23. I hobbled in pain until after thanksgiving. Then suddenly I could walk fairly normal. That boot is an enemy to healing. It takes some time for your whole body to adjust to being out of the unevenness and both feet evenly on the ground under weight. Just keep plugging around. My ortho doctor told me to get a shoe with a soul that is a rocker. So I got a pair of topo sneakers. Huge difference. I think it retrains the body/brain to heal/toe ambulation. Anyway…..so happy to see you up and at em! I know it’s a struggle walking for you noticing that little limp. But be encouraged it does go away. Practice writing the alphabet with that foot. Doesn’t matter capital or small letters!!! At least a couple times a day! Your limp is because you’re not quite full weight bearing reshifting weight. Plus programming from your brain from the height difference of that boot!! One day it will just be gone and everything will feel like it has finally taken a turn toward getting fully healed!!! I don’t wish any injury or surgical work on anyone’s legs or feet for any reason!!! It was very tuff go back to standing and walking!!! You’re moving into the home stretch!! Thank the Dear Lord!! Now back to the cars!!!!❤
@SpeedBumpGarage
@SpeedBumpGarage 6 месяцев назад
Its coming around but I haven't gotten away from that limp yet. Thanks for the advice
@dianegoldberg1003
@dianegoldberg1003 6 месяцев назад
@@SpeedBumpGarage That limp is not fun. So a couple of tips that were given to me. Don’t exercise to the point you feel pain. It’s not only a physical injury it’s a mental one. I never thought that if I push my foot and leg to pain, that the brain will alway equate pain to that movement. Lidocaine makes a roll on pain reliever that saved me at work. I kept it in my pocket. And would roll it all over my ankle and leg. It works well. I had a lot of nerve pain. That masked it so the brain regrouped on walking without pain. Plus walk slow and intentionally shift your weight from side to side like in a normal gait. Muscle has memory and so does the brain. I didn’t think about that until my physical therapist reminded me! So I guess the point is not only do you have to retrain your body but you also have to retrain your brain and don’t feed it the pain impulse with that movement!! I hope this makes sense? Love yours and the boys videos! You’re such a great role model for your sons. They will grow up to be really wonderful young-men!!! Jack already is! Love watching you work with them in the garage. I grew up watching and helping a little as my Dad and brother rebore the pistons on his 57 Chevy!!! I was the baby and only girl. So not only did I do a ton of baton and dance! I fished and trapped and was in the garage with them all the time!! So I love that your boys share this with you!! So don’t be discouraged with your limp make it do the old job. Walk deliberately on that leg slowly around the house. Slow and steady wins the race. I would come home from work thinking my nursing career was over. Yesterday, I never sat down for 13 hours and never had one bit of pain. Plus no limp! Plus I’m 62. You’ll get there.❤️❤️❤️
