The two styles almost evoke different effects, the left one a more gritty realistic style that you might see in a horror type story while the right is the opposite, very interesting

I absolutely admire drawings with hyper detail, but when it comes to comics I think “less is more” is the way to go. But you’ve demonstrated that they both can make for awesome artwork.

I'm doing Inktober for the first time after starting drawing seriously about 2 months ago and I'm learning so much. I just began using solid blacks in my illustrations and I've gotta say I really like it. The contrast makes the drawing look better than it is, in my opinion.

If you image the illustrations being taken with different cameras, the one on the left would be set up where the shadows reveal detail and the foreground also reveals detail, artificially flattening the piece and moving the tones closer towards grey. The one on the right would be like if the contrast was cranked up and the gamma correction could only bring out some details in the foreground. Even then the whites are blown out. It’s a cool effect. Useful for if you want to hide details in the shadows or if you want to reveal them.

When I draw a minimalistic piece of art, a voice in the back of my mind (usually doing a Clint Eastwood imitation, says, "Ya gonna finish that picture, or am I gonna have to come over there and make ya?"

@@adeadgirl13 Eastwood's voice simply is one of the most intimidating voices I ever heard. Nothing to do with gender. Have you seen Olivia Kemp's work? I used to think that I put a lot of details into my art, then I saw hers. She is an amazing artist, who seems also to be in the extreme detail club.

When creating a piece of art, the stuff you do without a tool in your hand could also be regarded as work. At least in my case. In fact, I oftentimes get my best ideas when I've laid down the pencil and I'm having a break while just looking at what I've created thus far. Especially in my "ideation phase" where I don't worry about details at all, but only focus on developing a cool setup/scene :)

I think the one on the right would've been more appealing if it had more white. The filling in style really takes advantage of lighting effects to make images look very 3d and almost jagged. Filling in the entire robot makes him look a bit flat. I have your Mastering Manga book by the way! It's superb!

Hey Mark, I'm halfway confused about the lighting in these pieces- shouldn't the robot be casting a shadow towards the viewer? Maybe not. Maybe you could make a video on how to light a scene? Or the most dramatic way to light a scene? Maybe that could be part of your Inktober? Anyways, great video as always...

Im no artist, and not really good at giving tips. BUT! In this anime I saw the the other day theres a crying scene where a character spends 20 seconds sobbing and its a really powerful moment. Fire Force Episode 9- at 3 minutes in is the scene where it recaps the previous episode. It's a good anime so if you dont want spoilers just watch it all the way through. I believe a similar image is pictured in the manga but its not as visceral as seeing it animated.

@@thelostlegendnoe4502 Also I feel like the saddness of the situation comes often way more from the situation and circumstances, rather than the art Look at hunter x hunter, one of the saddest scenes take place in pitch black Or look at some sad one piece moments, the one piece art is NOT very good for sad drawings, but I still cried like a bitch

Serafin Schaller wait I’ll explain the scene, a portal was opened to another world the red orcs who live there keep attacking the earth so the main character puts together a team to go to the other world and save they’re world it’s a long journey to get there full of obstacles they get there the portal can’t be closed from earth but can it from the other earth? After a fight with the red orcs the main character kills the red orc leader he says he is team has to go to earth he stays he explodes the portal then a little tear comes out of his eye ( he has never cried he is a tough guy) so I don’t know how to make that dramatic
@Chella972
@Chella972 4 года назад
I feel that one of the first thing to make your readers cry is to have a character they would attach to. Sometimes, even with no tragic issue for the hero but a "sad ending" you kinda don't want it to be over, because you're attached to the character, so his death in the end would be even more painful. I might be a bit of an asshole, but if I'm not attached to the character, I won't give a damn if he dies. Also it comes from fellings to feelings. I'll explain : if your hero is though, and we know it, we won't expect him to lose control. We need to feel that it's a hard choice, and that making it is shaking him somewhere from the bottom of his heart. His face when that tear fall (that could be just a close look on his mouth and the tear dropping), what he did/said before, his attitude. At the end, the reader might be "Tell me he survives, tell me he survives" or "Wow, that guy is so cool", but as long as you like it, that's what matter. That's my point of view, I'm no scenarist or whatever, but if that helped you it makes me happy. And if it doesn't I'm happy anyway.

I think Frank Miller, deranged as the man might have become in his late years, deserves a mention among those comic artists Mark was talking about as his stark use of B&W-based contrast ever since he broke out with his independent work on Sin City during the 90's might have been almost as influential as Mike Mignola's among comic fans everywhere (even though he was mostly aping old Argentinian masters of the 50's and 60's no matter how much he denies it). Frank undeniably took some weird stylistic choices with his artwork compared to his earlier, more grounded work, particularly when it comes to anatomy (which IMHO took a turn for the worse) but those early Sin City pages are arguably a thing of beauty; they just POP! And on 12:53 that's not Neal Adams, it's Lee Weeks which is truly a criminally underrated talent!
