One Piece: 1044 - The Most Hyped I've Ever Been!!

Love how Merphy was initially skeptical about things in the series like Sanji surviving on that island without food, now she's here with us getting hyped for Cartoon-God Luffy vs a giant dragon

One thing that I loved about the fruit reveal is that wasn't the most powerful, the most destructive, but the most ridiculous

To join the series this late in the game and STILL not get spoiled on a single thing AND to be caught up right when 1043 and 1044 were released, her One Piece journey has been unreal. Not to mention shes already been called up to the Reverie.

joyboy's ability to make everyone smile, including the readers, is literally the most perfect and fitting thing! I love it so much

It's also very ironic how the the Shandians were liberated from Enel by the person with the Nika fruit i.e. their God. Everyone was even praying to a God, if it existed. Skypeia arc was so beautifully crafted.

The fact that merphy caught up at this timing is still crazy to me LOL. This chapter was perfect to me. Not to sound corny but this chapter made me tear up a little. Seeing luffy just laughing the whole chapter was beautiful. Luffy's ability being limited to his imagination is the PERFECT ability for him. And that gear 5 panel in the last page is a top 10 panel for me in One Piece

Born too late to explore the Earth, born too early to explore the universe, but born just in time for this shit. Hype af. I cannot wait to see where Oda takes this story next, and am excited most of all about how the world is going to react to this. The moment Morgans gets a hold of this info, the revolution will surely begin. We are seeing the end-game of One Piece be set up right before our eyes.

It's amazing to me that 22 years later, I have to recontextualize the main character. Not because he's changed, but that we are only just now getting to know an important part of his character. Just like you I love the themes of this chapter. Luffy represents the juxtaposition of both inherited will and free will. Maybe some things are predetermined, and there might be an element of destiny, but the whole fiber of his being (quite literally) is flexibility and freedom.

Crazy to think that Luffy has been liberating people since Coby and Alvida. 20+ years of liberation build-up, it's all so perfect

I'm so glad someone that is typically outside the manga scene, was able to appreciate the incredible works of Oda. Your exposure to other literary works from notable authors offers an insight into your analysis of characters, themes and plot in a way that many manga-only fans can't appreciate. The fact that you joined this community as we share the excitement through some of the series' biggest moments is a huge facet in being able to appreciate the series for what it is, because it is the discussion and the theories and the "I can't wait till next week" that makes the One Piece manga so enticing! it would be amazing to hear your thoughts on episodic story versus reading/bingeing an entire book from cover to cover. Pros and cons?

One of the best parts of this chapter was Orochi Burning to death because a few chapters ago kawamatsu was saying "there's no honor in burning to death"

Major salute to the "read one piece" commenter, they put in just the right effort at just the right time for these stars to align.

As I recall, Oda long ago said something along the lines of choosing Luffy's power to be what it was because he thought it was the most 'ridiculous' power for a main character.

I just want to mention that although Luffy's comeback and the reveal of his devil fruit got me hyped, Hiyori's moment just hit me way harder. 20 years has this girl being dealing with the loss of her family and some of her loved ones; 20 years having to put an act due to the revenge she wants to succeed at; and some of those years she HAD to be near Orochi, who ironically sort of fell in love with her; and finally after all those years she can stop her act, reveal herself as the proud daughter of Kozuki Oden and just let all her rage and sadness flow as she finally takes revenge on the man who took everything from her. Luffy really got me hyped, but Hiyori got me tearing

The thing I loved the most about this chapter is that I as a reader was also infected by Luffy/Joyboy’s happiness. I found myself laughing and smile the whole way through, just as Oda/Joyboy intended

Oh wow! Merphy was so hype about this chapter that she’s literally shaking in her voice and body with tears in her eyes. I LOVE IT! I’m so happy that you expected it but also didn’t expect to hit you this much. What an incredible time to be a One Piece fan!

I really really love that Oda stuck to the soul of one piece and did what he really loves, and made Luffy's Strongest form a goofy funny form, and not something serious, it almost brings tears to my eyes, Honestly. Thank you Oda for doing what you love, It takes a lot of courage to be yourself, especially in a stage as this one, where the whole world is waiting, watching, and anticipating.

You cannot even begin to grasp at what a perfect point in time you decided to read op, this is arguably the biggest milestone in the series. Love it tho, I‘m so fucking hyped

Oda has already said that his favorite characters are the ones that allow for a comedic approach, and it makes me think a lot about how Big Mom and Luffy have so much in common, especially now with these revelations of the Straw Hat's power. It's as if Big Mom and Luffy came straight out of Disney studios, with their crazy creative skills, not to mention all the other similarities, like their unshakable determination (the young Linlin in Kaido's flashback says the exact same words as Luffy), the similar dreams of uniting peoples, the value for food and for those who feed them and, of course, the main thing in this chapter: the playful approach. I've always thought about it a lot, but now I'm sure: we've been following Big Mom for so long because Oda knows he has a space in her to do what he likes to do most, fun. It's not "meme", it's fun. And that's One Piece, the tale of a Fun Boy (JoyBoy).

This chapter was just SO MUCH to take in. SO MUCH change in Luffy’s character in terms of his abilities, and yet… really, he’s just more Luffy now than ever. I’m just so happy as a fan of this series and I’m honestly just SO happy for Luffy. 🌞

This is such an amazing time to be a One Piece fan. 25 years later, Oda is still having as much fun as he did in Chapter 1

There has been this minor consenses floating around that Luffy‘s Gomu Gomu is one of the weaker fruits, but it’s so strong in his hands because he is so creative with it. Oda just flipped that 180 on it‘s head with this chapter and was like Luffy‘s fruit is the most broken because you can do anything as long as you‘re creative with it. I love that.

I, as a grown almost 30 year old man, got up and started skipping through my house because of this chapter. Your excitement is shared in the Fandom. I imagine this is what Marineford feel like in the moment

This is one of my favorite One Piece-related videos I have every watched. Raw emotion and passion but you're still able to articulate so well about themes and bring a completely different perspective than all the other chapter reaction videos. You are absolutely needed in the One Piece community more than a couple times a month

Ever since Haki was introduced, I feel as though we have been ignoring Devil Fruits. It's about time we go back to questioning how they came into existence, what is Vegapunk up to etc

After that chapter I immediately was taken back to the time when I thought how in the hell it is possible that Luffy can suddenly produce fire out of nowhere (Red Hawk). Then I always asked myself how in the world can Luffy change the trajectory of his fists when using Culverin against Doflamingo. And after that I had the same feeling when Luffy used Kong Organ Gun where he just let multiple fists appear out of nowhere. The hints have always been there that his fruit is something else! Oda is a mad freaking GENIUS!

This chapter broke us all, so I love hearing you gush about it as much as the rest of us did 💗 I've been reading OP week to week almost 15 years now, and this is one of the few times a chapter has created such level of hype. There's a lot of exciting chapters in the story for sure, but this was HUGE. I'm still in awe of what Oda did. I'm waiting to see what happens during the fight, but so far it seems like Luffy's powers are something like... toon powers? Which is... it's just perfect? Like holy shit, I never thought it could be something SO perfect. For Luffy, because he's always had ridiculous abilities and his imagination to make use of what he had was always his strength... but also, if it's a power that makes people laugh, it just makes so much sense that it's something like toon powers, simultaneously funny AND powerful. I'm still amazed because NEVER in a million years I would've thought of that (not even with the common comparison of OP's style to cartoons!), and yet it makes so much sense now. Since I've been reading this manga weekly, it's so common for us fans to make theories that end up being wrong or are right in unexpected ways, and yet Oda keeps surprising me with things that are even better than what we could've imagined. This was an amazing chapter and I can't wait for the next one. Also... I'm still laughing at how Oda made you change your schedule, but can't blame you. You caught up in the most hype time we've had in a while, and that's saying a lot considering this arc has been incredible from start to finish.

I've only been watching One Piece for a year and reading the manga for a couple months, and I'm completely blown away. One Piece is truly a 1 of 1 kinda story and experience. Thank you Oda for 25 years of greatness and I'm sure many more incredible moments to come.

Not that they saw Luffy's silhouette in the sky, but they sensed his conqueror's haki that he was emitting as he woke up.

Kaido's face when he looks up at the hole in the ceiling is up there with Enel realising that his lightning didn't affect Luffy. It's a mix of disbelief, terror and anticipation, and it's absolutely amazing. "...Wait, who's on the roof? Oh no..." That panel could go on merchandise. Also your physical reactions are absolutely heartwarming -- you were shaking! Bless your heart!

A moment of silence for all those resin experts that got called in the forefront to talk about Luffy's possible abilities only to be now completely cast aside.

One Piece was trending at no. 1 on Twitter worldwide the day it came out! It's the first manga in history to have accomplished this! Btw, One Piece also reached 500 million copies in circulation, becoming the best selling series in history by one author, beating JK Rowling!

I love how this chapter made gear 3rd make sense, now it makes sense that a bone balloon would have the same impact as a regular giant fist, it's because luffy truly believes that what he's doing is giving him a giants fist.

Manga reactions were intense this week. This chapter made everyone so emotional. I saw some RU-vidrs reading the chapter going through the 5 stages of loss, and finally getting up and laughing hysterically.

I love how Oda made Luffy's fruit make Luffy a Looney Tunes character. It embodies everything that Luffy is perfectly. And I love how Luffy's design is reminiscent of Rubber Hose animation. Like he still has the properties of rubber, but for completely different reason than what we thought. If the anime animates Gear 5 like a Looney Tunes cartoon, it would be really cool, and then maybe I'll actually watch it. Merphy. You have perfectly articulated why I love this chapter so much.

How wild is it that you caught up to OP at the most hype reveal ever? For me, as a long time fan, this is the best moment of One Piece. To finally know Luffy's true power, I feel like we're finally in the end game and a lot of big stuff is going to happen. I agree, in my opinion, that this is perfect. The perfect power for Luffy. Of course the fight is going to be amazing, but I'm most excited to see the reactions of the other Straw Hats. What a time to be alive. Thanks Murphy. Thanks Oda. :)

I'm going to be so sad when this story ends. Nothing compares to the experience of following this story. One piece has been with me for more than half of my life now, it always gave me something to look forward to every week for so long and now that we are approaching the end game I can't imagine the day when the next week will not have a new chapter of this series, but eagerly waiting for the day I see "The end" at the end of the last episode of the anime.

Oddly enough, I’ve read the chapter 5 times over, I can’t stop laughing when I think of it. The power is perfectly Luffy, the desire to be the most free, to help others… Before the chapter came out I was afraid to be disappointed, but I had faith that Oda knew exactly what he was doing…. It was written more perfectly than Spider-Man: No Way Home. The number of ways it could bave gone wrong were infinite, but it feels PERFECT. Even so that Luffy’s ability to bring smiles reached me through the page. Nika bringing the smiles!

i cannot WAIT to hear your thoughts on this. i was literally (and i do mean literally) trying not to scream so my flatmate wont think im being murdered, but oh my god. how does oda STILL pull these crazy reveals off?? the fact that some people saw this coming bc he drew luffy at the party in skypiea is completely nuts, and i think luffy looks so...cute but majestic and special in that form. i adore it to pieces. also - the fact that the fruit lets him only "b limited by his imagination only"....that feels so meta. bc for me the joy of one piece has always been that the world is set up in such a fantastic way, that the only limitation of the stories oda can tell and still make them believable in the one piece world really only is his imagination. i....this is so crazy good.

I think this kind of explains red hawk how luffy can generate fire, the fruit is so powerful you can literally do anything to what your imagination can think of and literally thinking of ace allowed him to do that UNDER WATER. So yeah luffy definitely has the most dangerous power in the world

It's almost poetic that you managed to caught up to one of the biggest reveals in the series. I was left very overwhelmed upon first read, since it was just so much to take in. But as I re-read the chapter and see others thoughts on it, I've come to love it more and more. I can wait for the anime to do this moment justice. It's going to be great.

I think that one of the things that sets Oda apart as a story teller is how well he manages to convey joy. Both Luffy and Gold Roger brought me to tears when they smiled in this arc, and it's frankly amazing.

I love just how excited you were about this chapter. The sheer child-like excitement is just representative of the entire one piece community and really just expresses the excitement for all of us. I just want to add, Luffy always said "I am a rubber man" which just seems fitting for him to have a human human fruit. I think it fits better than people think

Just the fact that such a wonderful person like you entered this community is such a gift, but the fact that you only started going weekly and you are already living through an event for the history books is incredible. You've brought such a new and exciting breath to the community and seeing you on the Reverie podcast and now during this, the One Piece youtube community ascended.

I was about to go to bed but welp, Merphy dropped a new OP video. You actually joined the weekly crew at the perfect time! This chapter was straight 11/10 to me. I love how Gear 5th is so goofy. Truly the most Oda way to depict the most powerful form as the silliest. Luffy straight up pulled a Popeye there. I do think that zoans having their own will makes sense as all the objects that have "eaten" a devil fruit are zoan type. While I wasn't the biggest fan of Hiyori just standing there... menacingly, I can see why some people may like it. After giving such a powerful speech, I really wish she had slayed or at least defeated Orochi and then maybe spared him to end the cycle of hatred herself instead of it being resolved by some weird semi conscious remnant of the Kazenbo. And I get that a lot of people think its deep because Orochi essential doomed himself by wording his final command to Kanjuro by saying "lay OUR souls to rest" or maybe it was an accident (hard to tell) but I disagree. It would have been a lot more meaningful if Hiyori had something to do other than pin Orochi down and deliver a speech. The Kazenbo almost robs her of her agency. If she had for example, rescued Orochi from it and then knocked out the dude only to say something like no, "the people of Wano get to decide this tyrants's fate" it would have been so much more satisfying. I do understand why people may like the karma aspect of Orochi dooming himself. Just not for me. But boy, I am shocked, amazed, excited and confused by this reveal. It is interesting that only Luffy (his rubber like property), Kaido (the flame clouds) and Chopper (human intelligence and speech) ; all zoans, seem to keep some of their fruit's abilities without going through the three traditionally known zoan forms of base, hybrid and full transformation (and partial transformation in the case of Marco, but he's a mythical so I assume that's special) but it is also interesting that Luffy doesn't seem to have any real zoan forms or maybe his gears are similar to Chopper's point system? Now I want to see Luffy eat a rumble ball. That aside, I do wonder how much Shanks really knew when he took the gomu gomu no mi. The chapter did genuinely made me smile watching Luffy bounce around and being happy. Luffy is perhaps the only shounen protagonist to have never gotten a rage based power up. It has always been either from his wish to keep others safe, training or in this case, conquering death and now experiencing joy. He truly deserves to be the Joyboy of this generation. This makes me think we're getting a Kaido flashback in the next 5 chapter. Edit: Just wanted to say that I really appreciate Merphy for giving manga as a medium try. I think it helped destigmatize the legitimacy of manga as literature. Can't wait for tinfoil Merphy to come up with some theories. Looking forward to the next Hunter x Hunter video.

Nothing prepares you for what you're in for when you get into this series, nothing. I was literally shaking and smiling for hours after this chapter dropped!

I've been caught up with One Piece since 2010, and have been week to week ever since. If you're reading this Merph, just know that watching people like you take their own OP journeys and gushing about all the amazing moments that are in it just gives me so much joy. Luffy is Joyboy - using a Zoan devil fruit that turns him into the Sun God who spread happiness. Kaidou wanted desperately to be Joyboy. His artificial Zoan devil fruits are called SMILES! Was Kaido trying to recreate Luffy's Nika fruit this entire time?!

I love this, your freak out was EVERYTHING! I was almost in tears from the shock but in a good way! I was like omfg omfg. Everyone in this community was shoook after this chapter 😝😎🥰 I wondering if you would wait 2 more chapters and do your regular line up for 3 chapter but I’m hyped you didn’t! It so hard to contain the excitement this chapter gives us!

I love the authenticity of your reaction and how your emotions are spilling over about it. It’s wonderful to see this series I’ve loved for nearly two decades affect others so much.

In retrospect, I should have know about the foreshadowing of Luffy’s devil fruit. We have gotten so used to Luffy using Gears that it never occurs to me that it could be a Zoan type.

Nika isn't a god to be revered the way Luffy isn't a Pirate King to rule over the seas. He's there to make you laugh and smile, right along with him. One Piece is going to go down in history as one of the greatest stories ever told.

This chapter had me hype as hell. Oda knows how to hit you with the feels. I liked the Hiyori part even though it took away from Luffy greatness. She’s carrying Oden legacy just like Momonoske.

Loved the fact that Oda can use his own god as a power in the story! We all assumed we’d understand what Luffy’s power was and theorized for weeks! And Oda was like “Nope! Gotcha again!”😂😂 just perfect! Hiyori and Orochi was SO powerful too but I can also see how it’d easily get glossed over by Luffy’s awakening. Glad Orochi’s dying but I need more of Luffy!!!! Man I can just imagine Oda giggling like crazy when he drew this chapter. And he had me smiling the whole time too😁 The theme of Luffy always being free (as he said himself in Act 2 to Queen) fits PERFECTLY with his journey and I can’t be more excited for what he does with this awakening! The fight already looks like Tom & Jerry and I can’t wait for the new mix of funny and serious we’ll get in this now! Oda’s got me on the edge of my seat AND no break next week? Lets GO!🙌🏾🙌🏾

Your excitement during your opening ramble was contagious, I had a smile on the whole time watching it. It's awesome how you're finally able to join the week to week conversations at probably the biggest time in the series. Also, I loved your point about his power embodying the theme of the story. I hadn't really thought about it like that yet but it makes perfect sense that the man who only wants to be King of the Pirates because it would give him the most freedom and spreads freedom everywhere he sails has the fruit that is essentially the power of freedom.

What makes it all the better is that this is one of your first manga and your background in literature is very similar to a person I used to be close to. I tried to introduce them to the story; however, due to other issues we never talked again. BUT this is how I always imagined them reacting to the story. So thank you for giving this story a fair chance and sharing your thoughts with us. Unfortunately, RU-vid videos are the only “community” and outlet I have for this area of my interests. Thank you for your real, honest, and passionate review!!

We're glad that you're a part of the community! This chapter was dropping H Bombs, and you brought to light some things that I just plain forgot being a week-to-week reader since Water 7.

I feel like Luffy's the fruit can be a double edged sword because one's imagination can be so vast or complex that it can consume them, almost like having unlimited possibilities can prevent people from acting on a single one. However it is perfect for luffy because he is as simple minded, honest and focused as they come so he won't have much trouble mastering the devil fruit's powers and use them to their potential.

seeing SO many pieces of foreshadowing that Oda had done for this fruit come up has been such a great experience. Theories like the 'smiles' being produced as being failed attempts at recreating the Nika fruit, hence causing the person who eats it to either have a flawed, permanent smile, or a deformed half-zoan fruit. My personal favourite is people who brought up that, in the first chapter, there's a panel with Luffy saying 'Look what I can do!' while stretching his mouth out. Turns out, this is a slight mistranslation, and he actually says '嬉しい', meaning the sentence translates to 'look how happy I am now!'

I also love how Luffy's whole reason for becoming a pirate _is_ freedom, in stark contrast to even the marines, when you look at Garp for example, who wasn't even able to help save his grandson. And everyone else only wants to be the king of the pirates for the power that it brings.

This chapter is about the will of the story of One Piece and I think that's why I truly can't stop thinking about it.
