The reason why Nami's mom Belemere told the truth to Arlong is because when Nami was yelling at Belemere saying she wasn't their mother, that hurt her. She didn't want anyone to think that they weren't a family. Not the pirates, neither the girls. She was proud of being their mother. So she couldn't lie in her last moments. She took that opportunity to tell the girls that she loved them
Another main reason Bellemere didn't lie to Arlong is that, those fishmen will conquer and be there in that region in future and she can't keep the existence of her kids a secret for long time. So only option is to send them kids away from home and abandon them or save them by sacrificing herself. In anime, doctor suggests them to run away and never come back... As that's the only option to keep everyone safe, but Nami and Nojiko 10 year old kids will be orphaned again into wilderness away from home as they can't stay there anymore, and let their existence known.
It wouldn't have been her last moments if she didn't lie though. I really want to like that scene but his reaction was my reaction when I watched the anime, it felt like she just killed herself for no other reason than pride.
The reason why Nami's mother admits that she has daughters is because Nami was having doubts that they were a real family because she adopted them. She wanted them to know once and for all that they were daughters. The manga has more time to show why she feels its necessary for her to do this, but yeah, that's the reason.
Everyone forget that fismen destroy every boat and gona stay in the village... Belle mere know that because of her past as a marine... What gona happen when fishmen gona see litle girls going around in the village and they dont have payed for staying alive. They have orange and blue hair they are not rly like other. Fishmen kills children they dont care! It was the only way to save the girls! They dont explane all of that in the live action but just the fact that if u dont pay u die belle mere pay for the lives of her children and save theyr lifes. It's logical if she just hide the girls they have to be hide indifinitly?
Another main reason Bellemere didn't lie to Arlong is that, those fishmen will conquer and be there in that region in future and she can't keep the existence of her kids a secret for long time. So only option is to send them kids away from home and abandon them or save them by sacrificing herself.
and theres actually reason the mother didnt lie, the suggestion that he said "just said those plates are neighbors" they actually did this, in the anime the mayor guy and the doctor guy lied to arlong, told him that they were gonna have lunch together hence theres why 3 plates.
Luffy's line "Of course I will!" takes a whole page in manga. Luffy was so angry and when he finally heard the reponse by Nami, he felt the urge to express his rage and resolution because it's a very Luffy thing to do. All suppressed emotions were released at this moment. It's also a diciscion or signal responding to his crew imo.
something about it just didn't translate well onto the screen unfortunately. I think it could have worked but this attempt at it didn't land and came off as too cheesy rather than emotional/cathartic
Her mom Belemere is a Marine and she knew what kind of pirate Arlong is. She knew if she lied about it, he wouldn't believe a bit and would search the whole place then kill them all. Offering her part of tribute in exchange of the lives of her daughters was the only way Arlong would let the girls lives. She just took her last opportunity to say how much she loved them and they would always be a family.
Too bad it wasn't present at this point in the story. It starts later for a specific reason, in a specific arc that is themed around dumb, pointless rivalries.
Adding on to what others said about Nami yelling "you're not even my real mom" and Bellemere not wanting her and her sister to feel unwanted... there's a second notable element you're missing. *The Arlong pirates were not merely passing by.* *They were there to stay.* *And they didn't allow their prisoners to leave the island, either.* If she had lied about not having kids... the two girls would have had to sneak out of the village, take to the sea, and go live on their own somewhere... pretty much guaranteeing that they would end up dead. Bellemere sacrificed her life to make sure that the girls would be left alone and allowed to live in the village, knowing that other villagers, first among them "Scar Guy", would help them.
Also like in the hospital afterwards, when Genzo was getting treated, the doctor said arlong and co sunk the boats so nobody can leave, so nami can’t really get out of island anyway
The "Of Course I Will" In anime is so iconic that Oda and the team had to add it in the live action. It didn't came out as good as in the anime but they did their best so I'm cool with it.
The reason why she told the truth is that they can't hide it for long anyway considering Arlong had taken control of the island by then. And Nami was already insecure that they weren't a family, so she didn't wanna give her any reason to doubt that they were.
Zoro and Sanji rivalry is one of the funniest part in the anime/manga. In live action sometimes it comes off as toxic. Don't worry they really respect each other deep down.
The tragic backstories are what makes One Piece special. It's this notion of found family, no matter how sad your trauma is, there are these people that you can rely on and laugh along with
To answer your last question , everything about Arlong's past is from the anime. Including the mention of Jimbei (one of the seven warlords like Mihawk) who answered to discrimination differently. All of the story about it comes way later in the anime in an arc dedicated to fishmen and it's only there we readers understood why Arlong hated men so much. They did it early in the live action , surely to have a vilain with reasons and not randomly vilain but all of it is true
Nami's backstory is so sad, i loved the acting in this episode especially where she's fighting back when she's being pinned in the ground screaming with despair and hopelessness. It's so heartbreaking. The help me scene is so well executed.
@@anthonyhanlon9808 Disagree while the live action was great for what it was, all the extra context from the anime made Sanji's farwell and Nami's plea for help and backstory overall hit harder. Seeing Sanji humble himself to bow to Zeff cuz he's so greatful was so powerful to me in the anime/manga, and Nami's Backstory being a bit more fleshed out makes me question things less like why didn't Bellemere lie and say she had company over like Genzo (scar Guy) did in the anime
@@kobrajr25Yeah, there were awkward moments, but the intention translates well. I always end up looking at this scene with rose tinted glasses, but there's definitely lines and scenes with the handing over the hat scene I'd change. Luffy yelling of course I will is awkward, and the team yelling right instead of smth like aye, captain. Bellemere's character is also a little too vague to be entirely convincing, but the spirit of the show still manages to shine through.
Basically Zoro anbd Sanji are always at each other throats, through out the entire 1000+ episodes of the anime, Sanji has called Zoro by his name about 6 times only, he mostly calls him "Marimo" which literally translates to "Moss-head" (due to his hair color), meanwhile Zoro has called Sanji by his name a grand total of 0 times, he usually calls him "Swirly Brow" because in the manga/anime Sanji has swirly brows (which was thankfully removed from the LA along with Usopp's long nose as they would have looked DUMB) so i'm assuming he'll find a new nickname for him and so far it seems like it's "Waiter"
They actually change a major part of Nami's backstory, in the manga the villagers actually know why she join Arlong, they pretend to hate her so that she doesn't feel as bad when she come to collect money from them. Also rhe reason Nami's sister have the tatoos is so that Nami don't feel alone because now they have matching tatoos.
i think changing it from being them not knowing is heavier than having them knowing it all along. The emotional impact it could have to her sister is evident at the scene her sister finally knowing why she "betrayed" Coco village. I'm happy they changed it, it drives Nami to really push herself in saving Coco village, even though they genuinely "hate" her. Same thing she did there like what their mom did, sacrificing herself rather than Arlong finding she lied and killing them all, just to save her daughters. That change for me is better than the manga.
Look, if you want to feel even more for Nami's backstory (and have it make more sense), watch or read the original. They cut some pivotal details that make it more emotional.
@@mentormachado4601 they didn't, and they changed a lot anyways. Yes, they added some things to make her suffering have a similar weight in the next episode, but they aren't the same things in the anime. There are parts from the scene with Bellemere's death that were cut that were important to give it weight and to show Nami's trauma, and they're simply not in the show.
In the Anime her confessing about her daughters made more sense cuz they weren't at the house at the time she gives Arlong the 100k and as ppl who are holding the girls back are telling the girls they are gonna have to leave the village and Bellemere to survive, Bellemere (knowing that the girls would be out in there own otherwise) simultaneously tells Arlong that money is for her 2 Daughters and the girls break free and run to her to hug her then she says her last words and get shot in her face in front of them. And Nami doesn't go to Arlong he takes her cause he sees the maps she creates (then he makes the deal with her after her being chained up with him for presumably weeks) and she comes back to the village with an Arlong tattoo at like 8 pretending everything is fine, and Nami tells only Nezuko bout da deal (while she's 8) we find out later Nezuko tells the whole village so they all pretend to hate her because they dont want to put a burden on her of feeling she has to keep coming back to Arlong every time she goes to steal Money, they wanted her to escape if she wanted 2
One of the more impressive parts of their little theorycrafting is how they got a very major plot point entirely correct. Hope the live action gets to go far enough that they get to call back to this video and go "I GOT IT RIGHT!"
Jaby, they have to keep giving the money regularly and nami's mother cannot hide both her daughters for so long and when arlong knows about it then her daughters life will be in danger so she had to use the money to save them and hence cannot pay for herself.
Luffy is a very interesting character. He doesn't even bother to listen the backstory of nami. Luffy doesn't even talk too much in the manga but here he has lots of dialogue. In the original, the entire villagers and her sister knew about nami and arlong deal but they kept quiet about it. The emotional scenes weight more in the original. To know about the fishman people's, you will know more of them later on the series. And if the series ever reach that far, you will get more depth of arlong as well. One piece really manages to show the racism in a very fascinating way.
The straw hat is like treasure for Luffy. By putting it to nami he just said "You're my treasure too." So of course, he will protect it no matter the cost.
very possessive view of a person. In my eyes it is more like Luffy trusts Nami to hold on of his most personal object to protect while he protects her village and well being in turn.
To answer your ask about Arlong's past: It IS taken from the manga/anime, but it wasn't present in the early days of the manga. IIRC, the author came up with it many years later, which is sorta what happens in long-running series. Arlong was always a fishman-supremicist though, which was fairly understandable.
Garp is really a great character in anime, he isnt obsessed with luffy as in live action, he is angry about luffy and doesnt want him to join pirate but he doesn't chase him. In anime Garp and the marine dont have much screen time, they never showed up till later arcs, including Coby and Helmeppo. In Live action they wanted Garp, Coby to have more screen time, hence they have included them everywhere.
The thing with Nami's mom, it was shown that Arlong has some kind of residental record of the people live in the village so he has a rough idea on how much money he can get from each family. By saying that the 2 extra plates were for the neighbor kids, she would be putting those neighbor in danger and when Arlong investigate he would have found out the truth anyway. Now it's been a long time since I watched the anime so I'm not sure how that sence played out but from the live action it make sense that she did that.
I think you guys missed a thing about Garp, He was coming from a place of fear that if Luffy eventually found the One piece or even if he didn't, He might face the same outcome as Gold Roger that is getting exceuted. He just want his grandson to not face the outcome but he is also proud of luffy when he hold things on his own, or someone like Mihawk praises him
I know right! They missed it! I may have remembering incorrectly but I swear they said sonething about reading somewhere about some 'japanese societal norms' or something like that and their minds got stuck in there and thinks that Garp was representing that. We could comment the same topic in this channel and we don't even know if they were reading it. 😭
@@EnteraName1876 You're talking about a different part of the conversation. The japanese norms part was about their talk of letting the next generation start their own journeys, which is also a part of that scene. I don't think they missed the line where Garp straight up says he doesn't want luffy to get skewered by polearms. They just didn't talk about it.
@@combogalis Maybe I'm misremembering. But I vaguely remember them talking of what Garp was doing like MAYBE its a representation of the "japanese norms" in a previous episode. Yeah, ok I can kind of give you that, maybe they didn't missed it BUT the fact that they didn't talk about Garp not wanting for Luffy to get skewered and that they talked about, as they put it, "Garp saying nah" to Zeff's "letting the kids do their own thing" as something that speaks about japanese norms can cause a misunderstanding. Its like, that was what they only understand about Garp in this episode, someone that stands in a way of someone's dreams because of "japanese norms". Like that was only his role.
In the anime, Luffy actually didn't know Nami's backstory. He wasn't there when Nojiko was telling the story. He is a kind of person who doesn't need any reason to help if he knows you are a good person. That's why that "you don't know anything about me" "yes I don't" line made more sense in the anime. They just kept that in the script to make it the same scene.
Bellemere, Nami's mother's death was way more emotional in anime....it was sooooo good. I don't know why they did minor change s in the storyline. She didn't want Nami and her sister to be called "neighbour's daughters". They just had a fight before when Nami said they aren't family. So, she didn't want to accept that she didn't have a family even if it means death to her. She would rather die proudly by calling Nami her family than living with them by calling them "neighbour's daughters". It would have been selfish of her to do so. In the anime she says, "who says I do not have a family? I have two beautiful daughters and that 100k berries is for their lives not for me." Understand that Jaby.
Honestly, I politely disagree. For whatever reason during the anime I was just 🤷♂️ when it happened. I didn’t really feel empathy about it. I felt the “help me” scene just not the backstory. During the live action I actually felt it. I have no particular reason as to why I felt that way. I just did.
Yes. If she didn't give that money to Arlong for nami and for his sister and if later Arlong found out about nami and her sister then it would have been a threat for their life and she wouldn't want that so thats why she gave her money to Arlong
I love when people who are first getting into One Piece start theorizing. Just so you know, Oda has a way of turning something so obvious into something totally unpredictable, that's one of the things that makes him such an amazing writer.
Hiya! ngl I'm so happy that the live action of One Piece is so good and is telling it's own story, paralling the magna and not just being a exact 1 to 1 lazy copy or completely irregarding of the story like what happened in the Dragon Ball live action
One piece its so mysterious that even after 1074 episodes we dont know anything about the villains the marine system the world government even if the netflix tried to escalate things pretty good but still manga and anime show is so much vast that it clicks many world disorders like slavery , pandemic , rich poor concept friendship tales, perspective differences, exploitation , child abuse and many more things even though the actors are playing good but the real manga is more than anything
As an ex-marine, Belle-mere knew when a pirate group takes over an island, they force tribute payment from everyone and that all the ships to leave the island were already destroyed in the harbour when the pirates arrived. There was no way off the island and Belle-mere knew it. She also knew that if Nami and Nojiko ran like the mayor and the town doctor were telling them to do, Arlong's men to pick them off and kill them in a heartbeat. This was the only way for her girls to survive. In the manga and anime, the mayor comes to this realization aftr Belle-meres death when he goes to the harbour and sees all the ships are already sunk.
The best part of Strawhat crew is seeing Zoro and Sanji bickering, always on each other throats! And that moss-head nickname is one of the iconic nickname Sanji made for Zoro from the original 😂
Please watch the anime particularly it's key moments. After finishing this show, you will understand how important and iconic it is when Luffy shouts, 'Of course, I will.' Perhaps you'll also notice some differences by comparing both and experience what the live-action adaptation couldn't convey.
The manga delivered it so much better. The kids actually running away, but then get caught and brought back in front of her and Arlong, who already had a suspicion that she did not live there alone. So when confronted about it, she didn't lie then gives all of her tribute for them
I noticed a lot of reactors confused by Nami stopping in her running and then breaking down, because the live action completely changed the villagers attitude to Nami, in the original the villagers knew what Nami did and they tell her they knew so she could run away from the village, but when they heard about the rat Marine the villagers decided enough was enough and attack Arlong most likely dying in the process while allowing Nami to escape. This is why Nami broke down and stabbed her tattoo because of realizing everything she had worked up to was gonna get killed again by Arlong. It's a good thing Emily Rudd did all the hard carrying for the emotions of help me scene because the lead up to it was completely rushed and not connecting due to the changes they made to the villagers. Also the ''I don't'' line by Luffy to Nami in the original makes sense because Luffy literally walked away before Nojiko could tell the backstory so that line was Luffy just being matter of fact, while in the live action he does hear the story so that's why it feels incongruent that he still says the line.
27:41 aside of the reason others told you in the comments (which is true), if Bellemere said they were neighbour's kids then Arlong would instantly kill them right there 🥴 why would Arlong try to find the parents of them first to collect the money? his main goals is terror, not money. that's why since she only had 100k berry (Arlong said 100k for adults and 50k for kids, or they die) so she decided that 100k to save the kids than herself.
If they cut out the 'ofcourse I will' part , maybe it would've felt natural in this, true. But that's the outburst of luffy's emotions which have been piling up till then, and in the anime, it's perfectly timed and performed. You would feel that energy exactly as it is in the anime because the anime version luffy IS more energetic and the dialogue is perfect for him.
In manga, the sister and the whole village know her sacrifice and that make it more impactful when she knows they knew it all along. They should have kept it.
The back story of any character, even side characters they are great. They all make you cry? The live adaptation is great but the manga and anime has so much more info that makes it more impactful. We are barely scratching the surface of such stories.
Might have already been said, but other than not wanting to deny Bellemere had a family, in order to keep up the lie up then Nami and Nojiko would have to sneak off the island if they didn't want the truth to come out (and how knows what Arlong would have done after they found it she lied). If that happened, then they really wouldn't be a family any more, and Nami and Nojiko would have to survive on their own in some own place, but Bellemere would be alive. With Bellemere's sacrifice, she choose to die never denying they were a family, and Bellmere knew the village would at least take care of them
"Of course i will" screaming part was part of the manga or anime. I mean yeah, Luffy didn't need to scream but it was there. They had to include it One piece die hard fans can't missed that one. The Nami help me scene, everything about the last part is what the fans been waiting for in this live action. Because that moment is one of the legendary moment in One Piece
@@lokithor4139 he said it one time, that made it hit harder it was a outburts of emotion Luffy had built up the whole time, having him repeat it 3 times in the live action was weird.
Nah, even in the anime I think it would have been better off if he didn't say it at all. It worked in the manga, it hasn't worked anywhere else. Him whispering it instead the live action would have been just fine.
I'm not gonna say much but One Piece approaches a lot of complex topics in its world and yeah, Arlong stuff is from the manga/anime. It's largely agreed upon that One Piece prob has one of the best world building in storytelling, a lot of what isn't as apparent from the Live Action cuz of the limitations it brings w the medium itself and since we haven't covered a lot of the story yet. Great reaction, as usual!!
The fishman backstory is canon in the manga/anime but the reveal comes later on in the fishman island arc. that’s where the fishman slavery and oppression is revealed in full and arlongs backstory
She admitted they were her daughters because even if she didn't tell, someone would have to pay for them and who would. So she sacrifices herself to save them and also acknowledges them that they are her daughters know that she previously said they are not even blood related
Luffy not wanting to hear what happened to nami and still believing in her is sooo luffy and also the villagers knowing why nami is doing all this and pretending not to know and the reveal later, is what happened in manga and I think it was better than this version... 😅
Eh, if you leave it like the manga then a whole town of adults knew this child was being held prisoner and tortured and didn't do anything about it. I think western audiences would be really thrown by that.
The adults couldn't do anything for Nami though. They couldn't scape because they were prisoners. They couldn't take her place because they didn't have Nami's talent for navigation and cartography, so they weren't of use to Arlong. They had already tried to fight off Arlong and it was a disaster. So what were they supposed to do? Kill the entire village so Nami wouldn't have a burden anymore? The only real shot they had was going along with Nami's plan and hope for the best.
Actually in live action nami's backstory was rushed so thats why so many details were left but in anime and manga they show nami's backstory properly and it totally made sense 😊
Regarding the issues you had about some of the dialogue and acting being almost a bit much in the scene where Nami asks for help. As someone coming from the manga I also felt that and I think the reason it doesn't feel quite as natural in the live action, is that this is one of the most iconic moments from it that people bring up all the time which is why it's a case where they tried to sort of go with making it as close to a 1:1 copy as they could to give fans exactly that moment, while for the most part so far they adapted a lot more scenes more freely. And some of the imagery that is iconic as a manga panel or even a few anime frames, just doesn't quite translate as naturally into the more fluid scene with real people on screen. Luffy raising his arms in the air and yelling fits manga Luffy perfectly, but live action Luffy is usually dialed down quite a bit in his expressions and gestures, so trying to prefectly recreate that moment here feels a bit forced for the now real people on screen. Similar for some of the dialogue in the scene as this is simply the 1:1 exchange from the manga, where you don't have actors that convey a lot of emotions through the way they act even without dialogue and just silence. So yeah, this felt like a scene where they maybe tried to make it a little bit too much a nod for the manga/anime fans rather than adjust it to the slightly different live action circumstances.
I think it has nothing todo with translating the from the manga. If they had made it a 1:1 copy it would have been extremely better. It felt that something's missing when Nami start running to confront Arlong just to randomly fall to cry. The live action failed to capture Nami's full emotional breakdown because they changed things that don't make sense. Nojiko and the villagers don't know about Nami's sacrifice and hated her, so the despair that Nami felt when everyone decides to go for an unwinnable fight isn't there.
@@islandboy9381 I don't think the emotion is completely gone and the scene still works mostly fine and is highly emotional, but I e.g. thought in comparison the scene where Nojiko holds Nami back right before that and Nami screaming felt a lot more natural because Emily was allowed to just act it out herself rather than being bound to replicating the exact positions and angles of the manga shot. It's not that the scene is bad or fails in what it needs to do, but I think giving over a bit more freedom to the actors in their expressions and gestures might have worked even better here.
Arlong was gonna kill her. He knew she was a marine, i think. He would have taken the tribute and killed her since she rose suspicion and since they settle on the same island, sooner or later they would have found she lied and whole family would be dead. Namis mom thought of a way that would ensure her daughters were saved.
Bellemere was characterized a lot better in the anime, and the circumstances were a bit different, she was shown to be immature and clearly not completely ready to take care of two kids, so that decision fits a lot better with her character there.
About arlong and the slavery theme. Yes, it appears both in the manga and the anime and I would say it's arguably one of the main themes in the whole series, as it directly opposed to the freedom that Luffy encapsulates. However, the manga took hundreds of chapters to explicitly address it, while the live action brought it here so that we can understand arlong's actions, even if the live action was to stop here. It was a wise change in my opinion.
I am just happy to see non-one-piece fans coming up with theories to guess the story. We have been doing this for more than 10 years, and Oda-sensei, the author, managed to surprise us every single time by going beyond what we could ever imagine.
Aside from the whole family thing, the reason why Bellemere admitted to having 2 daughters is because Arlong wasn't going to leave any time soon. Unless Nami and Nojiko live under the floorboards indefinitely, the Arlong pirates would've found out that Bellemere had lied previously and kill all of them as punishment. Not to mention in the manga Bellemere only admitted to it when Nami was found and about to be killed. As an adaptation that should good enough as a stand alone, they should've made all of that clearer. Also, about the Strawhat. Achara was right, he was entrusting her something of importance to him, but in the source material it was clear that he did that in return for her entrusting him with the fate of her village/villagers, which is something of importance to her. Really sweet, and still one of the most iconic scenes from the manga/anime. Btw the source material has A LOT of world building. Arlong and the fishermen's past is faithful to the manga/anime.
Every key moment you guys watch of this series is exactly like the anime, especially the backstory of the main characters and the "of course I will!!!" from Luffy too.
The "I don't" is actually the only good part of this episode for those who watch the anime. In the anime Luffy never listens to anyone's backstories. He doesn't know anything about them, except who they are in the present, and that's all that matters to him. So yeah, it's weird for people who never watched the anime, but it's so satisfying to get a little bit of our Luffy in here. This Luffy is meant for mainstream audience who just want familiar tropes so it works though.
He did hear Sanji’s and even yelled at him for sacrificing himself when Zeff had saved him so he could survive to live his dream. Luffy naturally got upset because someone losing a limb to save their life? Exact same thing that happened with Shanks. And now he is out living his dream and willing to die for it, while Sanji’s risking his life without ever pursuing his dream. Zoro dreamt about his and Usopp’s was shown through Merry telling Kaya.
About the Nami's backstory and Bellemere not denying that she does not have family, the live action by design is made more compact and compressed (to fit in around 20 hours(60 episodes of 20 min each) content in less than 8 hours) and in doing so it loses the naunces that explain certain actions that characters are taking.
Why Bell-mere told Arlong she has 2 daughters? To ensure Nami knew, that she has family. Also in the source Bell-mere was a badass, she fought Arlong until she defeated and tortured. The only time she told the truth was because Nami screamed and Arlong was going to kill Nami as punishment.
Another reason Bellemere didn't lie to Arlong is that, those fishmen will conquer and be there in that region in future and she can't keep the existence of her kids a secret for long time. So only option is to send them kids away from home and abandon them or save them by sacrificing herself.
I'm just gonna put this out there and I hope you read this and it might add more to your awe for this , as a long time follower of One Piece we all knew that Garp is Luffy's grandfather and in the scenes in this live action before their connection was revealed you can notice the subtle difference in Garps emotion when the pirate with a straw hat was mentioned even more so when koby had told him that the straw hat pirate is luffy. Pretty great acting and attention to details.
"Of course i will" is iconic and perfectly suits luffy's enthousiastic personnality. Alot of what he says either kills the mood or hypes up a typical situation, that's just luffy he tries to give 1000% whatever the stakes
Many stuff were changed, but the overall story is 100% accurate. For example, racism and enslavement of fishmen wasn't really brought up here, but it was explored further down the line in another arc which was from the perspective of the fishmen. Regarding the "help me" scene, it took a lot more to lead to that point. The villagers and her sister kinda had an idea of what was going on (her sister got the tatoo because nami had a tatoo and she knew nami hated that tatoo). However they acted like they did not know, so as to not put pressure on Nami because if she knew that everyone was counting on her, it would make it harder for her to run away should she decide to do that. The Mother killing scene was also altered. In the manga it happened after Nami ran away saying "you are not my mom" (they did not make up yet in the manga), so that scene was there to reinforce that she indeed is her mom. There was also consideration that if she lied about the kids, they would have to live in hiding for the rest of their lives.
The oppressed fishman part. It does happened in the anime/manga, but you won't get to know it until episode 400+ where the crew learn and experienced it first hand in an island that was heavily still did the oppression. They actually kind of spoiled a future arc here.
@@Shinntoku I would say they are not sure there are guarantee that it could continue so they included some future parts to make the characters more interesting. The LA heavily centered on what each character motivation and goal is.
"Of course I will" is taken exactly from Anime. It works amazingly in Anime with Mayumi Tanaka's voice and Luffy's character!!!! I really love that. It is opposite to stereotypical acting approach. In One Piece world, where great warriors call out their finishing move, it works perfectly when Luffy shouting out loud "OFCOURSE I WILL!!!"
Arlongs back story and overall fishman's story has a special arc called Fishman Island. In that arc arlong and fishman tied full circle to the story..One piece don't leave plot unresolved.
If she would have told it's kids of the neighbors..The neighbours would have died..or they ultimately would have found out..She was a marine so she wouldn't put people in danger .. That's true marine moral code...
Other comments already explained why Belemere came clean about her daughters, but another thing to consider is that Arlong's crew had a list of all of the villagers. If Belemere lied and said she was just feeding the neighbor's kids, then Arlong would figure it out pretty quickly either by checking the list of villagers or by confronting the neighbors and charging them extra tribute. That could have resulted in an even harsher reaction from Arlong. As for the scene with Luffy and Nami at the end, that was literally ripped straight out of the manga. Like frame for frame.
32:29 ig those who read the manga or watched the anime will get it..that's just luffy's personality . When he said "i don't" it meant that he doesnt care about whatever her past is. he will do anything for her because she is now his friend and a part of his crew. (idk if this is a good explanation..someone can word it better than mine 😶🌫️)
@27:25 the reason Bellemere didn't lie to Arlong is that, those fishmen will conquer and be there in that region in future and she can't keep the existence of her kids a secret for long time. So only option is to send them kids away from home and abandon them or save them by sacrificing herself. It was slightly rushed here, but it hits way more harder in the anime, with Genzo and Nojik having graet moments which enhanced Nami's character. Btw, in retrospect, after 600 episodes or so Arlong's character and struggles are even more nuanced and multifaceted with very deep dive into the themes especially after Jimbei and others come into the picture.
I kind of agree that when you said Luffy doesnt need to say much coz how the actor expresses his feeling was enough but yea they definitely made sure one of the most iconic scenes in one piece had the same exact dialogue like the manga.
In the anime the scene when Nami's rage boils over and she stabs her tattoo, in the Japanese dub the voice actress does such a haunting delivery, its so amazing that many One piece fans say that was the moment they where 100% hooked into the series. I highly recommend checking it out. Also in the anime Nami does fight off the marine's for aslong as she can with her staff and Luffy doesnt say anything to nami after catching her hand, untill he yells OFC I WILL! like I said its a moment u rly wanna check out from the anime imo the emotion is way way way more intense and delivered in less lines.
32:32 The "Of course I will!" Is iconic and straight from the manga, so I understand why they kept that, but Jaby is on to something in regard to the way they don't seem to value silence in this adaptation. In a lot of the heavier moments from the original, silence is masterfully used. For example, when Nami is breaking down and crying, Luffy doesn't say anything in the original. It's completely quiet other than Nami, who is going at it to the point of throwing dirt at him as she tells him to leave her alone. That makes it all the more significant when he puts his hat on her head and leads to one of the most powerful moments in the history of the series. A similar change is at the end of the Baratie arc. In the original, after a big argument, Sanji slowly walks towards the going Merry in complete silence, other than his footsteps, surrounded by Zeff and the rest of the staff who are mostly big burly men and ex-pirates. They're all glaring at him and Sanji is so angry, he doesn't plan on saying anything as he sees them for the final time. As he's about to leave, Zeff calls out to him and tells him not to catch a cold. After hearing that, Sanji breaks down, runs back, gets down on his knees and starts crying his eyes out, thanking Zeff for everything he's done for him. After that, all the big manly men on the staff join in and start ugly crying, both thanking Sanji and cursing at him for making them cry. In the adaptation, Sanji just has a regular old heart to heart from the ship, which definitely didn't come close to the original for me, as good as this adaptation might be.
The thing about Luffy's line, is becuase in the manga, interestingly enough, he is never around when the backstories are told, therefore, he does really not know anything about Nami, and that makes these moments more impacting, because Luffy is only guided by his guts at the time of saving someone and the others follow him becuase they do know the backstories and know that luffy is never wrong when trusting someone he doesn't know. I hope all this makes sense haha. I love these reactions, and hope they are beloved as much as we all expect them to be. Salutations!
About the mother revealing the kids for the ransom, arlong wasnt going anywhere and was bound to find out eventually. So she had to make the call of either sacrificing herself or asking the kids to leave the village
The things you nitpicked were present there in the original anime, Like you said Luffy was emoting so much with his eyes but in animation its hard to convey emotions through eyes especially for an anime that was created more than 20 years ago, so ofcourse the anime had those lines bcoz 2D Characters cannot emote as well as real people. And its my personal opinion but the anime went darker in one aspect. In the original anime the villagers as well as Nojiko(Nami's sister) knew what was going on behind the scenes and they deliberately chose to ignore her suffering so that one day when Nami gets overwhelmed and decides to run away, she doesn’t feel guilty about abandoning people who loathed her. The villagers were ready to face the consequebces if ever nami decided to run away.
That’s not how it really went down. 1) she used to be in the navy so she knows how pirates work, they destroyed all of the ships and wasn’t going to let anyone go 2) She said she had daughters because they were going to find out anyway and they never made up after she slapped Nami 3) she attacked Arlong with the gun in his mouth and he breaks the gun with his teeth 4) Arlong breaks her arm by stepping on it 5) Villagers told Nami and Nojiko to escape by sea 6) The whole town knew she was holding all of this to herself 7) Luffy never knew anything what was going on b/c he walked off when Nojiko was trying to explain. SO YES HIS 2 LINES WERE NEEDED 8) This whole part was majority made it and not exactly what happened. 9) season 1 only covers like 49/50 episodes lol
The reason Bellemere told Arlong about her daughters is so deep and emotional. After their fighting she needed Nami, both girls, to know she was proud to be their mother. She was willing to sacrifice her life for them. And the tribute was a monthly payment. You saw them paying their tribute again earlier in the episode. There was no way Bellemere could ever hide both girls month after month. Day after day. They would be discovered, and not only would Nami and Nojiko be in danger but Bellemere too. In sacrificing herself, she gave them a chance at a future. Bellemere was the ultimate mother in that moment.
If she didn't tell them about Nami and Nojiko then she will have to either hide them there entire life or send them to another island to live in a orphan home.
