Yeah. It was a package deal with "Ojamajo Doremi" and "Ultimate Muscle" EDIT: Actually Norman Grossfeld debunked this the main reason they did "One Piece" was because Shueisha was wanting to market the merchandise outside of Japan.

@@Father_of_Death And the thing is, after Magical DoReMi and Ultimate Muscle started airing, 4Kids had a few employees sit down and screen the first couple episodes. With episode 1 they figured it would mostly be a lighthearted story about pirates finding the ultimate treasure with some minor swearing and references to alcohol, so they initially thought they were only going to have to make necessary changes related to that. But oh man, in future episodes they realized their mistake pretty quickly. I’m sure they tried to ask Toei if they could drop the license, but of course the contract had stated that they at least had to do it until it was up if they wanted to keep the licenses to the other 2 shows. Really I have to give credit to 4Kids, at least they continued to dub One Piece until their contract was up unlike FUNimation who basically dubbed 2 episodes of Interspecies Reviewers and decided to cancel it while holding onto the license anyway.

One Piece is in that weird grey area in many shonen between YA and adult. At it's heart, it has a very wholesome message, but it does have very mature themes and occasional fan service.
