I saw an interview with the actor who played Mihawk. He said it was very difficult because he had to look better than Zoro. He had never touched a sword before while the actor playing Zoro is an actual swordsman.
The actor who plays Zoro, Mackenyu, is the son of the late, great Sonny Chiba himself. If you watched 70's and 80's japanese samurai movies you probably watched one with him in it.
He killed it. Not only did he look like a swordsman but he has to wield a ridiculously heavy and huge sword and make it look realistic which he did. Major props to him!
To me best part of his performance is the dance moves on the fight with Zoro. Is like you can imagine playing him in a streetfighter/tekken type game and you cluck sidestep to avoid and he dances like here around Zoro.
Sanji's actor took this role very seriously, the moment he got the job he started training on how to be able to do the kicks and how to cook, if I remember correctly he did all of his stunts during the season, and Zoro's actor did all except one stunt I'm pretty sure.
Yes it was. And still they missed out on Mihawk apologizing to Zoro, that he didnt have a smaller knife with him. I allways thought that was the coolest and funniest line in the Anime szene.
@@MrMajesticMajesty you're allowed to prefer it, I just think "I don't hunt rabbits with a cannon" is a bit more clunky than "im not the kind of fool who hunts a rabbit with a cannon" You can disagree, I think I just prefer the wordiness of it
@@StupidWeb Depends on the day but right now I definitely prefer it without the fool aspect, keeps it simple and raw. The message gets across. It's not *really* about being a fool when you use a bigger sword or a cannon when it comes to saying it at Zoro, so it's not really that more accurate of an analogy either, it's just wordy.
@@ryuhitsuya21 l hope so at the very least we’ll probably see them watch the live action stuff this season and the future seasons when they come out but that’s progress!
It was also efficient; they reused and redressed some of the ships and sets from other projects. I wanna see more of that in the film landscape; it would save productions so much time and money.
Eric crying during shows is the reason why I love blind wave reactions so much but also I need the episode 6 reaction now!!! Just binged the first 5... It seriously is the best live action 😍
@@koki84ji7 Weird take to extract from the message. When someone says they can't wait to visit you, do you also call them out on their need of validation from you or...?
I love that Sanji is more subtle, compared to his anime counterpart. He's flirtatious without being lecherous. He's suave and smooth, but he's also sweet and very kind-hearted. I've also been loving the parallel journeys between Luffy and Koby.
Sanji was exactly like this in the east blue in the anime. He was an actual charming flirt. He became flanderized over time and that's when we get the lecherous pervert we know now.
@@captainmarvelous7678 honestly yeah that's one of those thing's I think I would always enjoy better watching the story play out in the live action instead, especially after timeskip you wouldn't get any weird fanservice in live action
I think the actor is also the most balanced between being an anime character while also being a believable live action character unlike most of the other members. Luffy for example leans more into the anime personality, Zoro and Nami feel a bit emotionless at times compared to their anime counterparts. Ussop is actually really decent. But sanji nails the role so well.
I love toning down his perversion as I don't think that specifically is needed for the character but we'll see if they toned down his simpishness too much going forward in future seasons. Cause one of the most important aspects of Sanji's character is that he desires women more than anyone else on the crew but he can't attain them specifically because he's so desperate for their affection, his obsequiousness makes him woman repellent. He has so many attractive traits that he needs to be a bit over the top to cancel them out. He's kind, handsome, a gentleman, strong, in touch with his emotions but stoic when he needs to be, mysterious, well dressed and well groomed, he is fantastic cook, he has strong nurturing instincts and he's surprisingly good with children, and he is loyal to a fault. Hence why Viola and Pudding (Who both have been manipulated by toxic people who didn't value them) both were immediately attracted to him when they got past the surface level and saw the man he really is. Basically Sanji has to be a bit pathetic in a really overt way or he'll be picking up women at every island along the way as well as pushing him towards being a womanizer which would go against his kind and loyal nature way more than being a flirt or perv. Though starting a Thriller Bark they do go way too far in the perv direction with Sanji which is only made worse by the timeskip and it isn't until he gets an arc focused on him that he's able to calm down a bit and be the Sanji I love again.
I had one of the funniest realizations watching the anime. At one point we see Mihawk cutting cucumbers, and he uses a bigger blade than he used fighting Zoro
Taz’s audition reel that landed him the role was Sanji describing the All Blue. His eyes had that genuine sparkle as if he really *was* Sanji talking about the place that he dreamed of seeing with his own eyes someday. Taz and the actor for Zeff, Craig Fairbrass, had worked together in another series, and Taz had recommended him for Zeff because they already knew they had chemistry as actors.
Taz Skylar who plays Sanji trained 8-10 hours a day in the 4 months before shooting and is now a Black belt in Taekwondo and did all his own stunts in the show. fun fact Eiichiro Oda the creator of One Piece signed Taz's Black belt for him.
Fun fact: Steven Ward (actor, who played Mihawk) revealed in an interview, that he knew absolutely nothing about the character, before he was approved for the role, and he hadn't even heard anything about the casting call, before his agent sent him an e-mail. Nevertheless, he is perfect for this role.
That's weird, I swear the man said he received a call to play a swordsman in a live action adaptation of an anime. When he was told that it's one piece, he immediately knew which character it might be and felt pressured.
Mihawk is fucking AMAZING. The single greatest character in the live action season. Screen accurate, character accurate, charismatic as hell, hotter than hell. Just. Wow.
it's not exactly the same thing tho - I have started the anime myself but I still miss the show because I also fell in love with the take the actors had on their characters. It's like the show and anime are siblings: they resemble each other and you love them both as their own entities instead of treating them as interchangeable
The anime and this show are like polar opposites when it comes to pacing. Take the Wano arc in the anime: I LOVED the animation for key battles. and they didn't need to go SO HARD for Queen's performance. But I still felt like certain sections were just too slow, and those amazing highs kinda highlighted the glacial pace at certain parts. I have the opposite issue with the live action: I felt Usopp and Sanji were crowded out in their introductory episodes. Considering they're crew members, I wish they were more in focus. I can understand Mihawk, but they should have given more of a spotlight to God himself. Usopp's actor is doing an impressive job for a role I never would have thought possible to translate to live-action, and I really wanna see more of that.
@@LucificNight It's unfair to try and objectively compare the two because it sets unrealistic expectations. By itself the show stands fairly, and keep in mind that it is limited by time, real life translation and budget in ways the anime isn't. The show did everything it was supposed to do , it's not perfect but nothing is and imho it's pretty solid in its storytelling, better than many other shows that don't even have the same limitations to be quite honest. Also, the show barely scratches the surface of the story while you have a 1000+ episodes of the anime you're comparing this to. Give it time to grow. Having watched already both Sanji and Usopp's introductions in the anime, i can say that I don't mind the pacing in the show. I actually prefer it, I felt like some parts of the anime were too repetitive and dragging, while the show went straight to the point and showcased the poignant bits necessary to both character and plot, but I can see pros and cons of both mediums and why one may prefer one over the other. Only one criticism I have of the show regarding Usopp is that it made him a bit more cowardly than the anime so far. I preferred the portrayal in the anime. Nothing on the actor, tho, I think he did amazing, the casting is on point, it's just that the writing made the character that way and it's not even that big of a deal, especially since they can showcase more of his bravery in future seasons.
@@theobnoxiousguy3425 I felt like he was that way in the LA as well, though. I mean, they toned a bit down pretty much everybody because translating 1 to 1 the anime attitude in real life would come off ass cheap acting, but they did nail the bits that matter in terms of characterization. I felt like the struck the perfect balance between real life and anime.
@@aqsw57Not necessarily. The first season was delayed because of the pandemic & work on the second season was also delayed due to the writers & actors strikes that happened around the first season’s release. It was bad luck on the show’s part but I don’t think the show will have anything else to delay work.
I knew the potential for Eric to love the world of One Piece was highest out of the crew apart from Rick! At some point he should just watch it on his own time, maybe when the WIT remake is out.
I know they said earlier (in the first episode I think) that they planned to divvy up two and two for the Live Action and the Remake, but at this point I see Eric giving in and joining Aaron and Calvin if(when) they watch it.
@@insanityapollo6261 yeah and the wit remake is sucha game changer they will adapt all of east blue in only 24-25 episodes, this way every saga of OP will be way better paced and more people will be willing to start OP from the start with better animation , pacing etc
Definitely one of the best episodes of the season! I've known a number of viewers that were unfamiliar with the manga/anime before this that upon this episode really start to fall in love with the live action and are more willing to check out the source material. As for me, I loved Garp raging/laughing at Luffy disabling Garp's ship, Mihawk's portrayal, Sanji, the Baratie set, Zoro and Nami's drinking game/bonding moment, and Zoro's duel with Mihawk.
I hope the finale of this show has Eric saying hes going to read the manga or watch the anime on his own time. He would really like all that One piece has to offer.
2:47 He went from "Why I oughta!" to "You've made me so proud." within seconds. In the anime, 400 episodes later Garp probably made Rick cry or shed tears believe me. 3:15 Eric I can't believe that you haven't reached episode 24 yet. 7:25 This is what I came here for. It would've been better if the sky was light green. Us One Piece fans know.
This is one of my favorite live action episodes, Sanji, Zeff, and Mihawk were all so well done and I cannot wait for your guys reaction to next episode because of that reason.
22:34 So I remember when this was announced (OP live action) and roughly like 2-3 months later the majority of op RU-vidrs came together in call to do this yearly event live stream talking about the past year of the show and other mangas. Matt Owens (one of the show runners) actually had a special guest appearance on the stream. Stream had like 20 thousand people maybe more it’s been awhile, but I specifically remember each fan just being toxic not really giving an inch because every live action up to this point was shit. And the most magical thing I saw, Matt started to talk about his journey and how OP helped him and tell his story about meeting Oda-sensei after he was finished every fan from being toxic switched to this most wholesome community saying “I’ll give it a shot.” I was just so beautiful 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
@@acchuptalaily7353 Will always be something I'll always remember while being a fairly new to the OP community. Fairly new meaning I caught up to the anime when luffy vs katakuri was weekly and zoro vs killer in the manga
@@Nicocalcio what a time to become a fan! i started catching up around the fishman island arc in the manga. its honestly so cool to hear so many of us getting into one piece so fairly late - just speaks to how good it is
when i saw this introduction to mihawk - i had to gasp. its perfect. its almost better than what they did in the anime. at least at feels JUST as epic if not more. the casting is also spot-on. sanji had a bit of a more badass intro in the anime than here, but i still like it a lot here. also - extremely impressive of taz skylar to actually do his kicks. like, you get so used to shows always strategically cutting away to the stunt doubles when stuff like that happens, and of course thats understandable, but you can really tell how fluid it can feel when the camera can stay on the actor bc theyre doing their own stunts.
The wildest thing about Mihawk that still today blows me away isn't just how strong he was. When I watched this in the anime during 2004 everyone at the time knew Mihawk was a big deal and the best swordsman in the world, but until 20 years later no one really knew just how important he was going to be to the story and that even though he was just a warlord, he was on the level of an Emperor which is just mind blowing to think about that all the way back here in the story. The first introduction to a warlord was actually one of the most powerful characters in all of the One Piece world. Good thing the rest of them weren't as strong or Luffy's story would have ended before getting half-way through the Grand Line. lol
10:34 Yep. Oda based the Warlords off of privateers. Also, if you continue with the series, you WILL meet all of them, & they all have significant roles in the story.
Keep your eyes out for the 7 Warlords, they are an awesome group of pirates and I can't wait to see them in live action, even if it takes years and years.
24:26 - In case you’ve forgotten, at the beginning of episode 1, Grandpa Garp was the guy overseeing Gold Rogers Execution as Rogers challenged everyone to find his One Piece treasure and become King of the Pirates. Also … RIP to Akira Toriyama he passed away earlier this week due to a subdural hematoma hemorrhage. The creator of One Piece has credited Toriyama’s Dragonball and other works as an inspiration on One Piece. Toriyama gave so much to the world through his Manga works like Sandland and the Dragonball Manga series (later animes), as well as his art in most Dragon Quest games, Blue Dragon, Final Fantasy IX, and several other places. Thank you, Toriyama-San, you will be missed. 😢
Having watched the anime to the current episodes, I believe the live action has done a fantastic job with condensing the story down. Especially with Don Krieg cause he actually had his own arc but it didn't really fit into the narrative that well, in my opinion. So seeing Mihawk fight them on the beach was satisfying to see.
Usopp dropping the Canon balls, showing they don't have a Box, is something directly from the original material..they really do not have any Ball box, forgetting where its said Outloud in the anime, Usopp says so.
The standout of the show for me really is the casting, these characters mean a lot to so many people and actors are giving their all and just embody their roles so well. Mihawk really is the coolest, Sanji and Zeff remain my favorites and yeah, that set is practical effects and totally stunning.
Awesome addition to the cast with Sanji. Perfectly cast by Taz. And love the relationship with the head chef. And Mihawk is pure pirating perfection. “We gotta get that sword in the wall!” -Eric. Just great acting in this show!! The writing is so effing good that these characters grow on each other and the viewer so incredibly fast.
The balance they've struck in this show on all fronts is so impressive. The choreography of the fights, Making things realistic enough so that it doesn't look ridiculous in the real world but also not so realistic that it no longer has it's silly charm, the actors playing the characters quirks enough so that they are there but not to the point where they are annoying or problematic, the mix of CG and physical sets so the world looks and feels real etc etc. I just love it.
A comment on hats... Good on you for remembering Mihawk's compliment for Luffy's hat. It is indeed worth asking whether he's seen it before. And if you think Zeff's toque is way too tall, it's nothing compared to his hat in the anime. You'd wonder how he gets through doorways!
Baratie's introduction with the music is a Feast, followed by Zeff & Sanji's bantering, then Sanji throwing legs all upto taking the order and his dream of the All Blue, Smoooth and Jazzy. Then freaking Dracule Mihawk shows up, this ep is a Banger Capital Letters.
Fun fact Oda used to work part-time at a restaurant called Baratei - Sanji is played by while Taz Skylar who was also Walt in “The Lazarus Project”, Gin in “The Deal”, Billy in “Boiling Point”, & many more. Fun fact he & Zeff’s actor actual work together before having a father son relationship so this was perfect casting - Mihawk is played by Steven John Ward (who also is Mark in “Catch Me a Killer”, Ezra in “Triggered”, Chaz in “Vagrant Queen”, & many more) while his younger self is played by Theo Le Ray - Zeff is played by Craig Fairbrass who also is Eddie (Villian), Arkad (Stargate SG-1), Pat (Rise of the Footsoldier), & many more - Krieg (bounty 17,000,000 Berries / Yen = $ 115,595.14) is played by Milton Schorr who also is Burrell (Black Sails), Graham (Warrior), Mercenary (Tomb Raider), & many more - Patty is played by Brashaad Mayweather who also is Bmore (Summer with the Guys), Brown (Deep Blue Sea 3), Damion (The Coroner), & many more - Gin (bounty is 12,000,000 Berries / Yen = 81,596.57) is played by Litha Bam who also is Bartok (Raised by Wolves), Ben (Warrior), & many more - Fullbody is played by Jean Henry who is also Arno (Diepe Waters) - Moody is played by Amber Hossack & she was also in Cut-Out Girls - “Cresent Moon” Gally is played by Nkulueko Phiri who also is Hlubi messenger (Shaka iLembe) which was Luffy’s first opponent in the Romance Dawn one-shot manga - Here are some Easter Eggs like: - With the Going Merry’s railing getting broken by cannon balls reminds me that we don’t have Johnny & Yosaku here to fix it because this is the point in the Manga / anime when they appear - Garp uses his technique called Genkotsu Meteor / Meteor Fist where he throws a cannonball at an enemy ship while it looks like Luffy just came up with his Gum-Gum Balloon technique - When entering the Baratie their outfits are from color spread: Luffy’s is from Ch.28, Usopp’s is from Volume 8 special, & Nami is wearing her outfit based on her Baratie arc & Ch.50 (minus the letters “WC”) which notice that the circles on her skirt are like a pocket - Once they enter notice the paintings on the wall references Gaimon on the Island of Rare Animals, Sabaody, a Giant King Squid, a battle at sea = maybe the Edd War, a giant wave with faces = sea monkeys from Ch.304, a Sea Beasts from Fishman Island, Foolshout Island (Koala’s birthplace), Kyuka Island, & the ceiling art is maybe the All Blue or Fishman Island - Sanji’s dish that he made is made of Elephant Bulefin Tuna which is the same dish from Sanji’s Cookbook & the fish that he buys in Lougetown from Sapi that originates from the South Blue, & if you look on the kitchen wall references species from the One Piece world like a wild boar, dinosaur, the panda shark, armored stone fish, tomahawk spiny lobster & dragon salmon (Shokugeki No Sanji) - Sanji mentions Ithurzburger Stein a drink from Micqueot in the North Blue that Fullbody mentions when he ask for the wine from Sanji in the manga / anime, but then with the Straw Hats he mentions Umeshu a wine that Kureha drinks - Luffy ordering milk is a reference to Ch.1 when after Shanks gave him milk he was mock for being a kid - Koby just like Nami in Ep.1 mentions 77th Branch which is lead by Pudding Pudding - Notice that on the cannon ball Krieg shoots at Mihawk has his Jolly Roger, & after his defeat you can see another named member behind him named Pearl “the Invincible Shield” - The large drink that Usopp had notice it had Sea Kings painted on it - During the Ending Credits you can see that they have added the Baratie located in the Sambas Region
to answer one of eric's questions here - your strong positive feeling about the live action comes from 2 sources. one being the sheer, undeniable outstanding quality of the original series' writing. and the second is that the netflix creators for once in netflix's history decided to follow the original as closely as it possibly gets. not re-writing, reimagining and making a different story out of it, but doing the original justice in live. that single decision is what gives you this feeling, bc the moment they decided that they'd commit to the original it was already on its way to be a successful adaptation by the pure logic that the original has been one of the greatest stories ever told in fiction. one piece's writing both plot, world and character wise is impeccable. the anime/manga is actually even better, so the moment they decided to commit it was the safest best decision they made. and then they found the perfect cast. that's it. i personally don't believe it's bc you're a non-anime watcher with no history with the series, so that's what makes it such a good experience, you'd get this wonder just the same if you knew the series. long time fans been loving and feeling it too, though for us it's also coupled with the positive surprise that they didn't botch it. the funniest thing is that what you're getting with the live action is less than the original series actually. so imagine how good the og has to be that even a more limited (but good!) version of it is THIS good. that's why people been telling it's criminal this channel never touched it seriously.
My dream pick for Mihawk was Tom Ellis "Lucifer". But in hindsight, I think this would have taken way from how cool and awesome Mihawk actually is by everyone new to OP thinking he's just a Lucifer clone.
Sanji's actor was fantastic at becoming the character he both practised cooking and would cook for the crew and he is now really into kickboxing and while training for the show at one point was training martial arts for 10 hours a day
7 Warlords are serving at the pleasure of the World Government. They can do whatever they want as long as they don't interfere in the business and function of the World Government and the countries/kingdoms that are affiliated with it. Which will become the MAIN plot point in season 2.
Apart from Mihawk, zeff's actor is very on point. I liked the adaptation of Alice in Boderline and yuyu hakusho. I hope they also get to watch the rurouni kenshin movies.
This live action adaptation IS great but I also strongly recommend watching Speed Racer. As far as I'm concerned that's the peak of live action adaptations. It's so good.
