You're a brilliant reviewer. I really enjoy all the angles and creativity. I'm sorry about your Oneplus Open. I hope it's a quick and easy replacement, so we can keep getting these great videos. And if not, we may have to take up a collection to get you a new one. Your videos are helping us. Have a great day man!
Oh wow, thank you so much Todd! I enjoy making content for you all so am happy you enjoy the content 😊 Haha, no collection! I appreciate the sentiment, however! May you have a great day also! Your comment made my day!
Well I have just gone over to the fold 5 from being a long term iPhone user. I dropped the fold from chest height onto a tarmac road, and had the s-pen case on from Samsung the hinge was exposed and it has small chips on the top and bottom of the hinge, but apart from a slight resistance when I opened it after it was fine and I bought a new Speigan case with hinge protection after that. It's was a fall onto hard road and was fine, very impressed. Also the charging is so fast on the fold it charges from 0 to 100% in just a little over an hour with the Anker charger, that's pretty good. I would wait for the Fold 6 rather then then the one plus tbh if you are looking to upgrade.
You can use tent mode.. just open camera app and turn on the cover display view and swipe up to homescreen, boom phone is opened and can be used in tent mode
I used my one plus for 2 month primary for gaming now inner screen scratch at first I thought it was inner screen protector that was damage I sent in open plus had a10 days with cell they sent it back with the inner screen still damaged I sent it back to them now they have a total of 31 days haven’t fixed it they waiting on parts very disappointed I sent a dispute with my credit card let’s see what’s going to happen.
Marques from MKBHD also had dead pixels on the crease area of his Open, but he said he didn't drop it, just appeared out of nowhere. This is looking to be a bad trend.
Hey, Teejay! Great to see you again! I appreciate you dropping in anytime 😁 I honestly love the Open as a whole, this was just unfortunate. Is he getting one?
David - Excellent review. One thing to point out is that you can in fact use tent mode on the OPO. You just have to set it down on the table then the gyro sensor will turn the outside screen on.
Thanks for this! @Kendrelewis5465 Poointed this out also which is great! Mine never worked I suppose then 🤔 Perhaps an all around faulty unit, haha! Thanks for the notice!
@@Mrtrojanowhy would he be looking for defects when he says he actually likes using the phone? Just because he had an issue with his doesn't mean he's trying to find reasons to bash the Open. You must have one, don't you? Otherwise, you wouldn't be defending it so hard right now lol. Everyone knows this is a thing that happens with any foldable or device in general. There's always gonna be some faulty units. Put your pitchfork down.
I owned samsung fold 4 and fold 5 before. Both ended up with some internal issues with flex cables that rendered s pen features useless/unusable and the phone failed to start or stuck on the boot logo. Fortunately they all happened under warranty and samsung actually had to replace the whole frame that comes with the new main foldable display just to resolve the flex cable issues despite everything else external was actually remained pristine even after half year of use…my lesson learned..never buy a phone with parts that move..it won’t last long
Love your "half" review since you weren't even able to use the phone to it's full capabilities. I have the Open myself for a month now and dropped it accidentally a few times on my tile floor and it's been a champ. Sucks that it looks like you have a faulty device and I'm interested on how quickly they resolve your issue, a follow up video would be great. I did opt in for the oneplus care plan because I know how fragile foldables are. It's so weird though that these One Plus fanboys are accusing you of sabotaging your own device, lmao! I appreciate how you are being respectful in all your replies to them.
It's unfortunate for you. But I would say yours might actually be one of those "faulty" devices. I don't have the One Plus Open, but I have its Asian equivalent the Oppo Find N3. I have dropped it twice on concrete floor, including once from nearly 1m above ground. Not even a dent. I was so scared when it dropped because I only had it for a few day. Seeing there are quite a few people having same issue as you with the OPO, I am thinking maybe the QC with OnePlus is less than excellent. Hopefully Oppo would do better on that end. Finger crossed. But I do have a little suggestion for those who have it or are considering. The whole shell of the phone is pretty smooth and slippery, and with the big camera bump, it will sit on a surface tilted. So you want to keep it away from edges. When my two drops happened, I swear I had it resting very stable on the surfaces, only to find it slid down the edges and hit the floor. So be ware. Keep it a few inches from edges, esp. if you have vibrations on.
I dropped my oppo Find N2 Fold version three times and once from 5 ft almost , thank god nothing happened to it, after seeing this from now I will be more careful, I really appreciate the leather back case I got from Ebay for keeping it well
Sorry for your device. I think this format foldable is great, multitasking ... but whatever it's a Google, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, i'm too afraid of screen or hinge issues. Also those brands don't have physical repair stores. I also think that's why Apple don't release foldable : issues with foldable are bad in terms of reputation and they cost money. I hope OnePlus will fix your device
Ie have the same problem with the screen broken the phone never fail down end Ie open today end surprise it’s broken when Ie open.when Ie open Ie. Heard the crack end after a this Ie see the black line in the. Middle end the left side like your phone don’t work the touch screen don’t work
You need to watch Ben's Gadget Reviews where he dropped it while riding his bike in LA and outside of dent and scratches to the frame of the phone, nothing happened to the phone. Both Ben and TK Bay were flown to China to actually see the stress/drop/water testing they put the phone through. You must have done something to it.
Hey, Jim! That's great that there's held up from the impact! I'm not saying that the Open is I herently weak or flawed in that way, but it's something to note for the company and this really is mostly to see how they handle this process. Genuinely, it fell on that same cushioned mat while closed and when I went to pick it up the screen began to die. Production errors and faulty devices happen allll the time with mass production of tech. I'm not crucifying them at all, I love the device as a whole for sure
@@DavidAVelez1 All I am saying is that these phones can handle extreme drops. I have personally dropped mine onto a carpeted floor from a table (about 3-4 ft) without so much as scratch. You must have done something more than a simple drop, but it sure makes the Samsung knights happy.
@jimmcnevin9367 For sure! I don't doubt they can take a beating and I would hope so at this price point. My buddy had an iPhone that was faulty at launch also before, sometimes it just happens you know. I love the phone and will definitely be getting another one! Have you had you're since launch?
I just had issue in internal screen . Top quarter becoming completely white and black bar around all 4 sides of screen. The phone was in case from 1st day. I have not drop it or exposed it to any abnormal condition . I used only for 3 months so far. I know folding phones has problem with internal screen and was mentally prepared to accept after 1 year at least but not after 3 month only. I have sent email for OnePlus support and waiting for feedback.
Same thing happened to my phone after just 3 days out of the box. I mean I did drop it 40 feet from my 4th floor balcony, but who takes accountability for their own mishaps nowadays, right!?!
very random comment, but your video is really well shot! the audio is kinda too grainy, If you fix the audio, this would look so much more professional, but you have alot of talent, keep going brother!
Thank you so much, Tom! I appreciate the feedback a ton. The grainy audio is me trying to get away with using the cameras built in microphone vs using my actual mic haha. Doesn't work out too well 😆
Late this video but there is a loud 1% on even the samssung foldables have this issue. Lucklily for me ive had my Fold 5 since release and still no screen issue but it does creek very audibly when its been closed for a bit then opening it up.
Foldables and flips are still a waste of money as they are fragile as heck. My wife's Samsung flip 4s hinge skewed out of allianment when it fell on our carpeted floor from her hand. Thankfully, our carrier fixed it, no questions asked. But the fact that these phones no matter the manufacturer brake this easy is not acceptable for the price. Until they become as robust as current gen slab phones, Foldables are not a good idea for heavy phone users.
You missed something very important. If you were silent about it and did RMA without elevating your influencer status and made video about your RMA experience like regular person that would help many people looking for foldable. There is not enough data for customers about how 1+ is going to handle inner display issues.
You know what, this is actually a really fair point. I honestly didn't consider it that way because realistically I'm still a small channel with not a super significant following. I figured they'd handle me the way they would handle anyone else (because my Twitter isn't large, only JUST hit 1k followers, and 400 of them were from the posts haha) I'll consider that going forward if something like this happens again. Thank you so much
Happens all the time with folding phones. Say them all the time with the fold 3 and 4 working wireless. Always encouraged the insurance. Not surprised to see the damage. As awful on the flip 3. Would black every 9 months for customers.
This is nuts. I've accidentally dropped my Samsung Fold4 a handful of times on tiles (thanks to tequila lol), and it didn't break. For an expensive phone, I would expect it to be hardy.
@@DavidAVelez1the unfold screen easily gets scratches but the repairguy at samsung said its just the pet protector and can be easily replaced a new one
Did they give you an option to send you a new phone why your phone is being repaired? I could not be without a phone so that would worry me if I had to send my phone back and they didn't give me one to use in the meantime. Let me know if you know if that would be an option or if you asked him that question to send you a phone and they would repair yours?
They don't send a replacement until the faulty unit is inspected. Took me a little over 1 week from shipping my faulty open back to them to get a replacement. Had to buy a burner phone in the meantime.
Really unfortunate. I've enjoyed the phone a ton as a whole, but this isn't acceptable especially for the price point. Hoping OP takes care of things here properly
Absolutely disappointed with my experience with OnePlus! My OnePlus Open's main screen suddenly went completely black, and despite no visible damage marks on the phone, OnePlus refused to repair it for free, and asking half the phone's cost for it. Talk about terrible customer service! #OnePlusFail #DisappointedCustomer
Pixel fold 8 SOT i cant kill it in a day Also screen on pixel much nicer than both had the open and sent it back oneplus have not been the same since oneplus 7pro loved them then
The phone should be ok if it drops, it's not durable straight up. This why i trip of these phones that copy Samsung, but made not as durable.. It also could be a case problem..
This is why I sold my Open and stuck with my Pixel Fold. I felt like the support for the Open was too much of an unknown. Can any outlets in the US even fix this phone? Will OnePlus stand behind it? Maybe next year I'll give them another try after I see how other folk's first year goes.
Hey, James! Fair points and concerns! I know that over here in the US, Best Buy ahs some of the best insurance on devices around. Basically, short of it being lost or stolen they have your back and will fix or replace with no fuss.
I HAVE THIS PHONE , AND YES THEY ARE WAY TO FRAGILE , MINE IS FINE , BUT I WILL BUY THE S24 ULTRA AND LEAVE THIIS ONEPLUS HOME , EVEN WHEN IM IN BED I FEEL LIKE ITS VERY FRAGILE
Its nice to have options but samsung is still king especially for durability software and customization plus ecosystem.... for those reasons i can't be satisfied without samsung. Now its time for samsung to finally give us what we want.
@@DavidAVelez1 I think so too, even if it's at your expense. But we've had it much worse here in Germany: due to patent disputes and court cases, there are no products from OnePlus, Oppo and co available to buy in Germany. That's really bad. That leaves me with the Fold 5 or pixel fold. Or wait a little longer for the Honor Magic V2. I really would have liked to have had the OnePlus...
I’m an iPhone user and would love to see a foldable iPhone. But no matter what people think this is one of the reason why Apple is not making them yet. Imagine having this issue on a few million foldable!?!
Yeah for the cash paid the theres still one thing that lets all these devices down....fragility. i have same phone but ive taken out insurance😄 just for these sorts of situations. Hope they sort you out in a positive manner david 🤞🤞 subbed aswell 👍
I've only had it for 6-7 days at that point and the ONE drop was on a cushion from pocket height 😂 I'm not bashing the phone or company, but it's not something you want to see out of a 1700 device you know? The video was made to give you guys an inside look on how the company handles these things. The video is for your guys' information and insight is all. As I mentioned numerous times in the video, I love the phone a lot.
I can guarantee my Macbook Pro, nor my $800 laptop are breaking from falling on a cushion from 3 feet 😂 I like the phone a lot, it's in pristine condition, and no piece of tech that expensive should break in that condition. I probably got a faulty device, all good
This is funny if you ask me lol. The phone didn't break on its own, you dropped it. It doesn't matter if the phone fell on a bed of pillows, you dropped it and it broke, then you call it faulty, what a joke!
So you're okay with your $1,700 phone breaking if it falls on pillows? I'm also not the only one having issues with the internal display. I like the phone as a whole, but the internal screen dying on a $1700 phone breaking from falling on a cushion is not acceptable. I like the phone, and am not going to bash the company, but that's not acceptable no matter what way you look at it.
My tent mode works just fine. The phone has sensors that know when the phone is not sitting down versus you holding it so you have to put the phone down first then tent mode clicks in and works fine.
One time when I had a s21 ultra I dropped it on my carpet at home and green lines were going across the screen. It sucked. It’s not a foldable issue imo
OnePlus is just all hype and no game honestly. All they know is how to hype up their products with useless Camera branding and other things that never translate well into their products. Any product after the OnePlus 7 Pro and the departure of Carl Pei from the company has made OnePlus a brand I would never touch. A brand can hype up and try to propose how their products are better than others, but if they can't last and be used with reliability, there is no point buying products from such brands. There is a reason why Apple and Samsung are trusted so much with their products.
I own a one plus 7t pro McLaren 5g 2022 and it’s still my main android phone I tried the 9 and the 11 they are better but the way that limited edition phone makes me happy is unbeatable nowadays I look at what one plus has to offer, and it seems like it’s good value but not so much innovation that they were becoming.
Boricua! Love it 🇵🇷 I have to disagree on the gimmick, however! Having a normal phone that turns into a tablet has been an amazing shift in tech for me personally! It definitely won't be for everyone though of course
The absolute lack of accountability in this video is wild. The short of it is You dropped the phone and it broke. You’re asking oneplus to take responsibility for your careless behavior. How is you dropping the phone the manufacturers problem? there is no flaw with the device, only the user. I’m sure you’ll get special treatment because of your channel but you don’t deserve it.
The phone was built to withstand more, I've dropped mine countless times even on concrete. Still works perfectly, he dropped it on a cushion. It was 100% a faulty phone and he got a refund.
Listen ....im so conflicted in which phone im going to switch to , im an s21 ultra owner and you and a few other reviewers have been my go to guys to help me with my decision. Despite what people are saying that"YOU dropped it" is irrelevant i want to thank you for reporting a real world phone fall on a not so crazy height or crazy hard surface i need all the help i can get to properly make my decision....thanks bro ill be watching for more update on your one plus open experience
This incident scares me the most about getting a foldable from other brands. I had a screen issue with my s21 and samsung service replaced it in a few hours. Foldables are more fragile for a fact, and good warranty and customer care is a must. Hope you get your fixed. Thank you for your videos!
Had my inner screen replaced on both my fold 4 and fold 5 the inner crease screen protector falls apart after 6 months and rather than replace just the plastic film protector, they replace the entire screen and battery under warranty(not 3rd party insurance) Both repairs took about 3 1/2 in total. But in all fairness they have a stock pile of parts laying around for all Samsung models
I did the opposite and went with Oneplus open after a two months fight with Samsung who didn't honor me a repair for my zolf5 and falsely blaming me for internal unauthorized modification to the phone!! I never ever opened a phone in my life.
Hey, Doug! Sorry about that. A lot of other content came up, But I did update on my Twitter like a week afterward (which I wouldn't expect you to know of course) That OnePlus thankfully was cool about the entire thing, apologized for the faulty unit and refunded me which I appreciated
yes for the breakability reason - I purchased at checkout - on their site the Quick or instant replacement phone,,, they discounted it from $99 to 39 and I figured I'd try it to avoid long delays if something happened... Usually I don't get that stuff but I don't know their track record for fixing things... So, I will be interested to follow up on this story and the way they take care of your issue. Thanks for the Great video, and I love they way you change scenery and continue talking like you just walked into another room... ha
did you have insurance? I just purchased the protection plan but can't find any information on how good the process is of getting your device fixed and sent back or replaced. Please keep us informed I'm very interested!
No insurance 🤦🏽♂️ I never had a problem with the Fold 4 or 5 and so didn't consider it. Will buy it at a Best Buy here if OP refunds me appropriately. Best Buy has the best insurance policy around! Will keep you guys updated!
Another RU-vidr dropped his Open on the concrete while riding a bike, other than the deep scratch on the edge of the device.. The screen was just fine. Like every foldable phone.. There's bound to be faulty ones.
My thoughts also! Likely a faulty device which is why I'm not crucifying OP yet. The hope is to just raise awareness, let everyone know I like the phone, and if enough people pay attention,/they see it, then hopefully they tighten production of a bit. But there's definitely always going to be faulty products sometimes, even with IPhones
Dropping on a cushioned mat should not break a Foldable. And it will definitely not break a Z Fold. My Z Fold4 had tens of such drops and the Fold5 already a few times. I think the problem is Open's hinge design. The hinge of Z Fold5 does not move on its own: it neither snaps inwards nor outwards, but that of Open does. It is simply not that robust. The hinge tests demonstrated by OnePlus with machines are complete BS becaause the phone never opens or closes that way. In real life it always snaps which means a much higher pressure on display and hinge.
Drops are unpredictable. Especially on this type of device with moving parts. You could drop it today and the affects may not show until later. They might accommodate you because of your social media presence, but I can assure you Samsung would not replace this device for free if you admitted to dropping it. With that being said, I doubt the Z would break if you dropped it on a mat with cushion.
Even though this is "technically One plus 3rd gen folding phone" because of Oppo partnership, it's not on the level of Samsung just yet. I think the hinge that *snaps* open and shut is causing the screen to break
@melissabenoistlovesbacon does no one know how to read. Yes I am very aware that the original first fold had screen issues, in my comment I quote how people say its "One plus 3rd gen since they are partnered with Oppo" who has been making folding phones for a Lil while now. Samsung has had a longer time to reduce the issues. I have the galaxy fold 5, previously 4 and 3, with no issues. I'm just saying one plus/oppo isn't at the point yet where their phone screen won't fail as soon as they do. I also think it's probably because of the snapping hinge design they have. I'm not saying anything negative against them because the Open is a very cool phone, and I hope Samsung takes notes on their design for the cover display and multitasking UI. You guys are too quick to type and not read
I have the open and had the same problem. I dropped it on the floor from not very high and my inside screen broke. I dropped my z fold 5 at least 3 times with no issue
❤ is there any update on this issue,hv u got any satisfactory reply from OnePlus, brother i have been watching ur video ever since u posted this video,so please suggest me should I go for OnePlus open or wait?
No matter what the brand Fold, whenever I see these broken screen videos, they are all the same story. We never know "how" it became to occur. We always get the same story of surprise. They never did anything wrong. Only the manufacturer is "bad" for not fixing it right away...
I have just wasted 12 minutes of my life watching this video because this guy wants to threaten ONEPLUS by telling them that I have a posted a video and look 10000 people are watching my video and you have to give me a replacement or else I will SLANDER you image. FY
Hi David! Not really a person, that likes commenting and spending time in this section, but I found your videos pleasant to watch. Got OnePlus like a week ago and phone is great, but definitely camera is lacking. Not really sure, why all (or most) youtubers are giving high scores for this camera. I had few Onepluses (3, 3T, 5, 6, 7 Pro, 8 Pro) and it's the same problem all the time - moving subjects are always blurry - even during the day. It's Companies like Samsung or especially Google are able to fix it in post production, but Oneplus always struggle. Also - selfie camera is producing good looking pictures, but oversharpened. The difference is clearly visible right after taking a shot - when post production kicks in. It changes picture a lot. Overall I'm pretty happy with my phone, but I value productivity aspect mostly. Camera in my opinion is in low midrange territory with good optics that helps to hide problem with software and optimisation.
Hey there! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts! This is one of my favorite parts of YT and I'm happy you enjoy the content here :) You know, I'll say the cameras definitely aren't the best out on the market right now. I think it captures still pretty well, however. But moving subjects do have a hard time on this camera for sure. I'm glad you enjoy the phone overall, though! I agree. The productivity is big for me also. A commenter told me that OP is getting Microsoft support for the Open a bit later on that will work like Samsung Dex, so that's cool!
Hey there! Haha, I kind of see what you mean. Are you okay with your $1700 device breaking after dropping onto a cushion? While closed? I don't see in what way that's okay for consumers. I'm not throwing OP under the bus, because faulty production issues can happen but this is definitely not alright. Just bringing light to an issue and gave them props for addressing it quickly
You can spend $30,000 on a faberge egg. Price doesn't necessarily mean durability. If you want a phone with a hinge, gears, and a giant opening down the entire side of it, thats STILL as durable as a sealed up iPhone. Please travel to an alternate timeline, or adjust the laws of physics. Also: The video evidence you provided obviously isn't sufficient. What about checking for water damage? Or damage to gears in the hinge that could only be caused by a drop?
Hello Dave. I was completely in distraught when your phone dropped and it stopped responding and I was like "wow that's all it took for the Fold to be unresponsive." Jeez, they need to improve on it's robustness. Anyhow my online classes are ending this Friday (it's next Monday). And so far my grades are in good shape, so today and tomorrow I'm giving it everything I have (I'm doing a speech bonus to boost it to atleast a C or a B as my final act. Overall, I'll keep you posted.
Hey, Ken! Super unfortunate circumstance. Hope it resolved quickly! And congrats on the online classes being over and for putting in the extra effort to get grade boost, Ken! Hard work goes a long way!
Dont blame open. Every foldables are fragile. One Samsung engineer in service center adviced me not to buy fold as he is getting 4 to 5 defective fold every month for repair. He told me not to waste money. Foldables are still luxurious item.
Of course he is getting defective devices every month..... he's an engineer in a SERVICE CENTRE 🤣🤣 A Cancer treatment specialist see multiple cases a month, so I guess we all have cancer.
@@peacelove8395 I would assume that the service specialist had a reason to point out the fact that there were a much larger amount of service requests for the fold vs other phones.
My oneplus open got a white line horizontally and vertically on the inner display just 2 days into owning it, and was not dropped at all. I just got my replacement yesterday (1 week after sending back the phone) and am definately very afraid of it breaking again especially after seeing this video. Had a z fold 4 that had an inner display issue 2 months into owning it as well.
I had the same.. line going down left of the middle and a white horizontal top right.. so seems like it is not an isolated incident. I had mine for 2 months so past the 30 day mark for a replacement.. been waitinfg 3 weeks for the service centre to receive components for repair =/
@@livebundtrading8962 I ended up purchasing the drop/liquid damage insurance through oneplus last month, hopefully that helps if my replacement screen gets messed up :/
Hi, Dr. E! Good point, no case. But honestly it should not have broken falling on a cushion when there is no other damage anywhere on the device you know? My Fold 4 was very durable, and so has my Fold 4 been without a case. These are expensive devices. But we'll see how they handle it! Sometimes faulty products happen in production
It has Tent mode, it's activated once you open it up and place it on a surface. You say the cameras isn't better than the S23u or iPhone 15 Pro Max how about you do an unbiased camera comparison test to support your claims that the Open cameras aren't better? I'm sure other viewers will love to see that video.
