One savage move that *truly* paved the way for Kpop [KPOP History] 

Please, please, please go back to making these sorts of videos! I appreciate the news show and the live stream, but theory and essay videos are why I subscribed several years ago.

@@DKDKTV That's the one. I first heard of Seo Taiji when I was a kid with the track Nan Arayo on the 3 Ninjas movie. And seeing that Metal being injected throughout his music, Nan Arayo, Class Room Idea, Orange his Nu-Metal phase. His impact and formula can be heard in alot of Kpop today. As much as I tried I did not found Korean metal to listen to, except some of seo taiji's songs, it's a bit frustrating. If someone has a lead for me I would be grateful !

Yes! I particularly enjoyed the explain Kpop songs videos, I miss them. I learnt so much, especially about Korean folklore and idioms. DKDKTV’s explain video of Pentagon’s Naughty Boy was exceptional. You can tell Danny and David put a huge amount of work into their videos.

@june I need to check that one! For me, it was the explanation of BTS Idol that brought me into this channel. It was mind-blowing.

@av SCompact Not defending the use of black face, but the 90's were such a different time where people didn't always understand where the line was between honoring someone and offending them. My guess (because we may never know the real reason) is that they thought it was something of an homage to the hip hop artists that they were emulating. You also have to realize that this was in South Korea where there are NOT a lot of people of color (probably less so back then) so they likely would have had no clue what would be considered offensive to that community. They may have even been trying to accustom their country to seeing darker skinned artists. And back then, it would have probably been pretty much impossible for them to collaborate with actual black artists. But even in America, there were still a lot of white people who did not yet understand that black face in all situations was offensive to the black community. Witness comedians/talk show hosts having black face sketches coming back to haunt them decades later. We've grown since then. I don't think Seo Taiji used black face past the Seo Taiji and Boys era. And I don't think they did it to be offensive. Had they known it was, I'm sure they wouldn't have done it. But I don't think it would be fair to negate what they did for South Korean music based on the poor choice they made in their youth in a time where it didn't even necessarily seem like a poor choice. We learn, we grow, we make better choices. But I agree....a lot of cringey things occurred back then that we didn't always realize were cringey at the time. Knight Rider exists.... that's all the proof you need that the 90's produced a lot of cringe-factor. I'm just glad to see that so many things that seemed "normal" back then seem cringey now. It gives me faith that maybe things really can change given enough time. We just need to keep being the change.

I was also expecting "Classroom idea" to be the revolutionary song, didn't know about "Regret of the times"! But imagine releasing the song with only the instrumental and without vocals as a protest against censorship. Savage move, for real 😆

Yes its the decision of the broadcssting system rather than by the government. Before, a song could be literally not released just because the government were uncomfortable about its content and never released to the public. Sometimes it was banned after it was released because they thought it brought depression or anti government spirit or even for reasons that "they sound too much like a japanese song(this was a problem for early south korea cause they were trying to encourage patriotic emotions while distancing itself from its colonial past)". Also to ensure that the artist has at least one song that fits the tastes of the higher up, there used to be a seperate track that needed to be in the album called geonjeongayo(건전가요) which was basically south korean propaganda songs that artist need to sing.

That's a completely different issue. Of course in broadcasting there are some rules and censorship, but the video is about how the government could censor the song itself and make the artist change it, not only during TV appearances, but on the 'original' form on the album

@Priscila Correct, but then it means that TV stations can censor lyrics (or whatever) although they are "legal", right?

@@baudolino2727 they can censor under a few reasons like having brand names on the song, but the reasons variate under each chanel. It acually doesnt matter on the current time because youtube and streaming plataforms exist and there are a lot of ways to promote the song other than TV, even tho they still have influence.

If you want your song to appear on tv then you do need to meet certain requirements. However they don’t have the power to stop you from releasing the song altogether or change your lyrics. They only check if the lyrics meet their standards for their channel. You can still release whatever you want on your album and MV though it might not get aired on TV. The old government censors could stop a song from being released so it would never be heard. You had to get your lyrics checked before you could release them and they made you change lyrics they did not like.
