Took me a bit to follow what shape is being discussed, but I think I understand: we’re basing the position on the root and fifth of the chord, with the root on one string and the fifth on the string below, but two frets up. You build your muscle memory around this and then you learn what else happens in this position. The fifth above the root note is just one string down on the same fret, for example. And you can easily transfer this position to whatever key you need to play in. If you’re in C you just find the root on the A string and go from there.
@waynesworldofmandolin3616
@waynesworldofmandolin3616 2 года назад
You got it Mark. This closed position makes it possible to play in all keys and tranpose solos to accommodate vocalist who need to sing a song in a different key.

Great lesson, Wayne. But either your hands are a lot bigger than mine, or your mandolin is a lot smaller than mine. My fingers just can't span that many frets, so I often have to just use the top 3 strings.

The scale positions changed based on the the key and without knowing all the licks and scale position changes for the sharps and flats I am not sure what I am supposed to get other than the power chord shape. I am sure its just me, any help appreciated.

I've been playing guitar most my life and recently(about 2 weeks ago) got a mandolin just because I want to expand musically. I've learned most major chords already and improvise/jazz around from chord to chord... which can figured out because of my guitar experience. I can say that Wayne's videos (this is the 2nd one I've watched via RU-vid suggestions) help nearly instantly if you are an already seasoned guitar player. Thank you Wayne.
