Had a short day at the hangar today, as we have family in town. The other crew are working hard on that strut, and now have to pull the upper half in order to get at all the remaining seals. I was asked to pull the starter out of the tug that ran out of diesel fuel so we can get that over to the shop to have fixed.
Fo those of you that are on Instagram, check out Jack's page, as he regularly posts stuff from the hangar. His page is at:

Dirty, grimey and unglamorous job. But it's got to be done, and done right. Good job on fishing that huge anvil of a starter out of there ! P.S. I've sometimes used a short stout (4x4) piece of wood, placed on top of a thinner (2x4) longer piece that's used as a leaver. Might come in handy when aliigning the studs and threading on the first bolt. If you can find somewhere secure to attach, a rarchet strap from the top to help guide it in. Please look after your back !

If possible, rotate the engine by hand via the crank hub and check the flywheel teeth

Good idea. A good session of magnet fishing is called for.

Great idea, we were thinking the same! Sadly, I don’t think this engine has the ability to use a turning tool, so we’re going to have to use the front pulley.

Great to see the young guy getting involved. The skills you teach that young man will stick with him and in the end the things he learns will save him $$$$$$ over his life by being able to diagnose and fix things as he makes his life. The real life experience if far better than any thing you can learn from a X-box or RU-vid.

Replace that old HEAVY Delco-Remy starter with a reduction gear unit. Less than half the weight & way stronger faster cranking. And doesn't use as much juice either.

This was OEM on this engine (a Perkins). We’ll look at see what’s available. Now that you mention it, I bet that is what was on my Cummins. That starter was a lot smaller on an engine that’s a bit larger than this Perkins.

Would you ask Charlie to look at the intercom and see if he will run the wires to the ICS plug in the Lt WW. The excuse I got when they put the new equipment in was the seat was in. That problem has been eliminated with the seat out. Also, I think Charlie has a hand drawn schematic that shows the hook up.

Kind of what it looks like. Be interesting to see what it looks like when it’s fixed.

First time I replaced a starter in my old Ford, it had this problem, a broken Bendix spring!

What got you interested in knowing how things work and fixing things ?

Was always interested in stuff like this since I was young, learned as much as I could (and still learning), and tinkered a lot. Being an Electronics Tech in the Coast Guard gave me a solid foundation on the electrical stuff. Certainly has held my interest over the years!
