Cecil Isaac explains what smudging is and why it's important Follow the FIRST NATIONS CENTRE Facebook: / fanshawefnc Twitter: fanshawefnc?lang=en Official Website: www.fanshawec.ca/student-life... #Smudging #Indigenous #FirstNations
May your hands be cleansed, that they create beautiful things. May your feet be cleansed, that they might take you where you most need to be. May your heart be cleansed, that you might hear its messages clearly. May your throat be cleansed, that you might speak rightly when words are needed. May your eyes be cleansed, that you might see the signs and wonders of the world. May this person and space be washed clean by the smoke of these fragrant plants. And may that same smoke carry our prayers, spiraling, to the heavens.
I love that you said "there is no wrong way to smudge". That resonates with me so deeply. If you are smudging, your intention is to improve a space or a thing .. the intention is good and present and i feel that's important, more so than "how" you go about it. Thank you.
The correct meditation, (modern version ) . From the ancient wise men of Taoism Hinduism and Ancient Greek. The purpose of any Lifetime 😁 You are not the body or mind that you assume to be 🤫you are an Eternal Spirit born into the body and mind bio machine but have become identified and entangled with the body and mind bio machine by the temptations of the five senses, you have forgotten over many incarnations 😵💫 The Matrix is your own bio 🖥️ computer virtual reality brain machine 🤖 that keeps you in the illusion of being a physical Being 💪 in a physical world 🌍 via the nervous system and the five senses called Maya from Hinduism and the world of Duality from Taoism and the Ancient Greek, and the metaphors of the Fallen Angel 😈 and Original Sin or original mistake of which one of two states of consciousness is the correct one to use while passing through the material Earth Realm.🤔 Meditation is the ancient secret practice 🤫 of putting the body and mind to sleep ( like a 🖥️ computer in sleep mode) but staying AWAKE and ALERT inside BEHIND CLOSED EYES until you re experience yourself as Eternal Spirit Consciousness again.❤ If you remain in your True and Original state after meditation it is called : Nirvana , Samadhi, Cosmic Consciousness, Heaven WITHIN Luke 17 21 -Jesus, Prodigal son, The Tao , ☯️ SELF-Realization by Yogananda , Garden of Eden , Born again by Jesus, Obtaining the Golden Fleece in Greek Mythology, becoming a Demigod ( half Human and half God and now qualified to teach Spiritual Evolution) , Moksha Self Salvation , Awake as Eternal Spirit again by Buddha , 😇 The "Eternal Inner Witness" by Socrates Ramana Maharshi Krishnamurti and others , the Bright , the practice of dying by Socrates and the Stoic Saints, Satori, The Holy Grail to Eternal Life (not a real cup a literary image ). Very good message we can all follow... it's not the act or just going through the motions... but about the intentions and sincerity of the heart... It can apply to anything in life, especially religion. like one who merely goes to church... A chanting of a generic prayer... Calling yourself such and such, but never walking the path of that belief...
I was reluctant to use sage but after years of negativity I tried it and it changed my life. Things became clear, still and I felt a strong connection to the earth.
I don’t think there’s a time I don’t smudge. I’ve been doing it for sooo long like 25 years that as soon as something negative happens, when I go home I smudge. I crave the smell and serenity of it. It brings me peace and my home too and when o have none, I can really feel the difference in my space. ❤
An honour to watch, thank you from Sydney Australia, land of the Gadigal Peoples of the Iora Nation. Internationally I pay my respect to Elders past, present and emerging. Always was, always will be Indigenous land
As an Australian Aboriginal, we don't own the land and never have and never will. We are a part of the land and caretakers. We care for the land and she cares for us in return.
I love educating myself about the sacred beliefs of the indigenous cultures around the world but Native American culture is so intriguing to me. So spiritual and I love the rituals and understanding why these practices are so important to their culture. Please keep sharing so I can educate myself .
Thank you for your teaching and placing it here on RU-vid where younger, and somewhat lost, generations can find it and reconnect our ancestry. Chi miigwetch !
The younger generation are seekers and discontent with the world that the elders have left them. They are lost because their elders from the West are lost. Postmodernism and the "take what you want and leave the rest" guide to spirituality is the practice that I see most often. Loving devotional service to our Creator and others, and obedience, is the nectar of instruction. I speak this as a Mexican with indigenous ancestors that practices a religion from India called Krishna Consciousness.
@@alfonsoalmendariz3325 idk what the odds are that I ended up on this video, then reading the comments to go on and read yours. This is less than a week since being introduced to Krishna Consciousness and someone who is an avid...practitioner?(I don't even know the correct wording,it's *that* new to me) Anyways, I didn't really reply for any reason other than to say it's crazy how things show up when one is paying attention. ✌️💕
You are part of the original earth people, and I have the utmost respect for every first nations human. I was very blessed to be invited to the Navajo Nation reservation in Arizona. It was centered around a family ceremony, and it was the most powerful experience in my life. I broke bread with the family, learned what the young people were bringing back to the Nation from college, to better the community. While I didn't understand the words of the prayer as the sun went down, I felt it in my heart and soul. I met most of the elders that were there, and they were all so kind; some even gave me a hug or shook my hand. I didn't sleep over, although invited, because I felt like I was imposing on the family gathering. I will never forget that experience as long as I live.
Thank you. I smudged my space this morning and also smudged myself while speaking positive affirmations and prayers. May we be happy. May we be at peace and at ease. May peace find it’s way to every part of this world
Indigenous people allow enough room for right and wrong, always knowing and aware of the difference. The culture is so wealthy in story, praise and knowledge, much respect thank you for sharing.
Miigwech. This is very accurate. I also used an abalone shell bowl, and eagle feather. I mainly used sweet grass (for healing) and white sage (for spirits). Tobacco I've used at Native American funerals (an offering in respect of the dead). Smudging can be used for more than self protection. I used this method mainly for removing things that I knew were only spirits, (meaning an entity that had once been alive), as like with house blessings, it can sometimes make matters worse with demons. Demons usually require more powerful methods. Smudging is also great for balancing the energy in an area. It's absolutely worth learning.
I've learned more about compassion and appreciation for living on this planet than my original intent to learn smudging, thank you so much for sharing this gift to us. 🙏🤲🏼
I agree with many other comments in that it is my honour to not only witness this Smudge, but to be included in every aspect of it!! Very beautiful and spiritual and I have always wished to be shown how to Smudge by an Indigenous person, who I've always felt, in my deepest heart of hearts, has a true connection to nature and the Great Spirit! I wish to thank you very much for sharing what I consider to be something extremely sacred. Much respect I carry in receiving this information.
Thank you! I learned much that I didn't realize, here. When I worked in a hospital, medicine people coming in to tend Native patients would boil sage and smudge with the steam. This is useful to know if you have a loved one on an oxygen tank or otherwise unable to be near anything burning. My tribe also uses mesquite and copal (copal only for honoring the dead and the ancestors) and another tribe I know uses a certain kind of tree-root, but won't say which one for fear that people outside the tribe would uproot all of those trees and cause their extinction. A medicine-man told me that if you can get nothing else, you can smudge with corn. That can also come in handy.
I love finding things like this so I can learn more. My parents turned their backs on our ancestry saying "we were american and that's all that mattered." I yearn for that connection and taught my son that too.
Thank you for taking the time to share the ancient knowledge of your Tribe, your wisdom and the language. We have much to learn,/remember. The time for remembering/learning is right now.
🌱🐚Yesterday picking stones on a very special trail. The colors of the four directions that I hadn’t thought about for awhile. Being drawn to them. Walked a little ways and a hawk friend appeared calling. A few days before this I was asked by a sister if I’ve smudged lately and how I should. Today your video comes to me. Thank you Cecil🪶 For the reminder. Blessings to all✨🌎🌍🌏
I noticed the bowl you used looked like what we in Aotearoa NewZealand call Paua ( abalone ) Being a country of Islands the Ocean is extremely important to us in many ways . When my beloved Brother died we all had Paua shells and each of us put a small handful of his ashes in the Paua shell and while standing on his favourite beach we sent his ashes floating out to sea . A special person , a special place ,a most precious Pacific Ocean and unending gratitude to the Creator who made them .
My husband just gave me a smudge kit for my birthday which is tomorrow. I have been actually wanting to give burning sage a try. Just came to your video and put a smile on my face. Your explanation and voice is very soothing and peaceful. I'm happy to know there's no wrong or right way which I am relieved. You inspired me. Can't wait to give it a try. Thank you!!
We are glad this video helped you so much! Let us know how your smudging! We hope it goes well! Thank you for the support! If you are interested in our content, please like a subscribe to our channel :)
Smudging ones' own senses is profound! I never thought of that. And your breath from which you will speak. Again, profound! I have only been smudging a few years since I became spiritual, smudging my home and the four directions. Thank you for sharing your wisdom regarding smudging. I will soon be receiving my turkey feather with which I shall begin smudging in a more traditional manner. Peace, bro.
Thank you so much for passing your wisdom on to others. I've been searching for a source to learn about smudging that feels true to me. My great great grandmother was Indigenous from Oklahoma, and I'm so grateful for having known her daughter. She lived with my grandmother, and I visited them often. I brushed her beautiful long hair at night, and shared a bed when I stayed overnight. She and my grandmother had beautiful loving souls. My ancestors were Indigenous, Scottish and Irish from Oklahoma and Texas on my mother's side, and French in Louisiana on my father's. I have love, respect, and a thirst for knowledge about all cultures. Having been raised Catholic, it did not feel true to me, so I chose a more spiritual path at a young age. Thank you for teaching about smudging. I'm looking forward to contimue on my path, my quest to connect with the Creator, and my ancestors. ❤
Thank you so much for sharing, I can not tell you in words how much I appreciate you taking the time. So much can be learned by practicing the Native ways. When I stood in the circle I found the path of spiritual balance and inner peace. Some people say “ you know your not Native American right? “ …
I am a white girl from England Emigrated here to Colorado 2004 I found my Native roots here I went to Standing Rock to protect the water I remembered past lives I might look white But I have an indigenous native soul, and proud of it I remember 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💜🕯️
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us today. It is an honor to receive it. I want to be careful not to steal your indigenous teachings, such as smudging. You are giving me permission to practice smudging in my own way, Migwech.
Thank you for sharing ❤ May the great spirit bless and keep you. We need more, and more of all that we have lost, with this great wisdom from native American people. I’m so grateful for you to share this. It is so valuable.
I am Navajo. My Ojibwe friend Smudged me 2 days ago. So much was going on in my life. Since being Smudged, nothing but Great Wonderful things have happened to me. 😊
ThankYou for allowing us to watch Smudging and learn and understand more of Aboriginal People’s Cultural Beliefs and Traditions. I am studying and learning Grade 12 at home. I am so sorry for your loss of children and siblings, family and friends. Many Prayers for the souls; and Justice will prevail.
I hope your studies are successful Lorraine! Thank you for the kind words and your support! Please consider subscribing if you'd like to stay up to date with our latest content!
I'm starting to learn that true beauty can't be seen with the eye. It has to be experienced by the Spirit, and felt in the heart. Learning your ways is humbling. I never realized that life is made of such small intricate things. I really do believe that we can heal the minds and hearts of Humanity. Respect love and appreciation for everything is a lot to learn! I believe that this is why all of us are here. Love and peace to all.
A kind soul gifted palo santo to me, and I’ve been at a loss if I’m allowed to partake or to reach back for whichever culture is mine in the line of my mothers. Witnessing this blessed me today. Thank you. ❤️
I watched some other videos about smudging, and then I stumbled upon this one and didn't feel like I even had a right to watch it. I'm so glad I did. This was the best video and made me feel something. What a gentle energy this man has. Thank you for sharing your way with the rest of us. Respect.
Chi Miigwetch to our elder Cecil for patiently putting on this demonstration. It's is a fact that when one isn't fully confident on how things are done, that they tend to "go inside themselves" or take a backseat, meanwhile they all can be encouraged and inspired to practice our traditions in their ways and the ways of their people. Chi Miigwetch! Shardah NIcholas
I am french Canadian and have native blood from both my grandmother's, I stopped and watched this video out of respect and tears rolled down my face, and I don't know why.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful and heartfelt ceremonies. I find them very uplifting and sacred. Although I am not of first nations decent, they resonant with my heart, the Creator and Mother earth in a way that I believe mankind has lost, but needs so desperately now. Thank you warmly.
This is such a beautiful thing to see. I have so many good feelings about what I have seen here. Your voice is strong, and good, and kind, and I hope that your prayers are answered in a joyful and wonderful way by The Creator. Thank you for sharing these sacred things with us. May the Earth rest firmly under your feet.
Amazing indeed. As a Muslim myself this really really interests me. It combines the tradition of wudu (ritual washing before prayer) and the use of incense (which is also popular in Muslim culture). Fascinating
I love that younpoint out there is no wrong way to smudge. It about being guided, praying and blessing the people and the space. ❤ Thank you so much for this wonderful video ✌️ peace always
Sorry to hear. We hope some of our videos can help remind you of your elders. Thank you for your support! Please consider subscribing as you will be notified when we release new content.
Thank you so much for this! Very sacred. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints I find something incredibly familiar and kindred in this.
I Smudge my home at times when I feel there’s something in my home negative. I’ve always been able to see or since things as a child and dream of things that come true and have had many spirit animals come to me.White Wolfs, spirit bear, spirit horse with wings, coyotes, owls
Many thank yous from Minnesota. Smudging is such a sacred tool for the body, mind and spirit. I was taught smudge from a couple of Anishinabe men. Those who smudge together never forget. Thanks, brother.
Wow!!! I love how this is taught. He is so calm, relaxed and sure looks like he knows what he's doing. I wonder what he's chanting, im eager to know what was that and how its said. Thank you for this. I learned so much in just minutes. Thank you
This is beautiful. I recently bought a home about 9 months ago and I ordered a smudge kit off of amazon. I ended up returning it quickly after it was delivered. Now looking back, I believe it was because I was not ready. I have been doing nightly yoga for 8 months and now looking into meditation. I am now researching smudging because a part of me wants to know how to respect the process and by that, I feel buying from amazon without research would be opposite of that. I truly enjoyed your video and when you smudged your heart, it brought a smile to my face. Thank you for your video.
It’s simple. Return back to your Creator and your life will be amazing. How do you return to your Creator? Drop the anger, drop the resentment and forgive. Once you do this, God will give you back your life. All will be lifted off of you. You will see and live life through Gods eyes and mind. Life will be amazing. I promise you. Pray morning. And pray night before bed. How to pray? God knows what you are in need of. Simply be quiet and listen to his spirit within you. He does not need you to give him a list. He knows all things. Once you begin to pray silently, your heart will be gin to commune with him and he with you. I promise.
Thank you for your conscious effort to respect our culture. My ancestors are from Mexico and my great grandfather was indigenous. Connecting to ancient cultures has brought deeper meaning to my life and a greater perspective on the relationship that I have to my creator. Thank you for mentioning yoga and meditation. When you are ready, either this lifetime or the next, I would encourage you to look into the Vedic society and knowledge that comes from the Vedas of India. True yoga includes Bhakti and Japa. Love and devotional service to God and others. Japa and chanting mantra is the process that relieves us from maya and illusion, especially in the age of Kaliyuga. I chant hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare, hare rama hare rama, rama rama hare hare. If you chant that with respect and love for our creator you will find great joy, peace, knowledge, eternity, and bliss.
Thank you for sharing something that doesn't always get shared to the masses. Thank you for teaching me a way of smudging can use my own life. May the great spirit be with all of us. Flagstaff az
There was also a tradtion of smudging in my culture . The peasants smudged their cowshed and their cows in the 10 holy days between christmas and new yuear. And I am smudging my rooms after cleaning... Love and light to you all from germany❤
I don’t have hardly any family. But I know I’m part Native American. So I’m trying to find some sort of belonging. I appreciate your video so much. Thank you.
I'm glad you found Cecil's teachings helpful! I hope you can continue your journey and learn more about your culture Amanda. Thank you for your support! Please consider subscribing to stay up to date with our latest content.
This is such a beautiful video. What a lovely man. Native American culture is truly incredible. I love learning about it. "I also smudge my feet so I that I may walk on this mother Earth with great respect". What a profoundly beautiful statement. Our world would be a better place if we all thought this way and respected and loved the earth, it's people, and animals, as much as indigenous folk. Thank you for this video.
Thank you forsharing your knowledge. In another life I saw myself as a native woman adopted to a choctaw people. Then I understood my connection to the old ways. Thank you
