If you want to go really big, livestock mineral buckets are great! If you know anyone with horses or cattle you can get them for free. They take Rustoleum paint well, and are great for crafting. I made mine into self-watering containers so in the summer it's only watering once a week. They also make great garden clean up tubs.

MY husband asked me why I keep so many plastic pots as we were doing fall clean up and storage. I do use some of your reasons and a few of my own. I use quite a few for holding plants that will be transplanted at some point and they are handy for the plants donated to garden club sales. I am definitely going to plant tulip bulbs using the plastic pots and plop in other pots. Glad I didn"t plant them before seeing this. Thank you .

The idea to put a plastic plant pot in the massive containers and to conceal the entire surface with gravel is brilliant. I recently pulled a muscle when repotting a larger planter and thought I would now have to say goodbye to the beautiful terracotta pots in the garden. But thanks to your great idea, the beautiful heavy planters can stay.

Great ideas! I saved a few black nursery pots because I saw the title of this video, but had not watched it yet. Last night, I was looking for large pots to put some banana trees and elephant ears plants in that someone had given me, and there were those saved nursery pots. So tonight I sat down and watched this video. Win! Win! I also learned from you, to put plastic pots inside my hanging baskets to keep them from drying out so quickly. It really works! Thank you!

You're so right about double-potting holding in moisture. The only way I was able to successfully keep Boston Ferns was by putting the fern in a nursery pot inside a somewhat larger resin pot. Not only did they last through a hot summer, they grew massively for three years.

Love them and have actualy bought loads of the big to giant sizes. The smaller ones are best for re-cycling. Exactly perfect for growing large shrubs and trees in pots behind other pots in borders, on terraces etc as the black colour means they disappear but the plant doesn't. Also nice to put in more decorative but perhaps fragile expensive pots you dont want roots destroying. Perfect for plants with known aggressive roots you want in pots long-term like standard camelias or cordylines. Word of caution pests like pot weevils and earwigs, slugs, cut worms and snails love to hide in the gap when a pot is placed into another container. This makes a perfect hiding spot during the day, at night they come out and do their damage. So you may want to fill that gap with something. I use pure sand or fine grit as its easy to pour in and critters can't get into that either. With a basket try using a bin-liner (trash bag) then fill in that between the pot, unless its a very fine weave it's not he best hiding place so might not be needed

Yes ! Love those pots too!!! When I was a much younger lady and learning all about taking care of my yard , my landscaping lady who did my yard , taught me all about saving those pots and what to do with them! Loved her ! The best tip she taught me was to use those great big ones as a cleanup bucket instead of a wheelbarrow , like when I would be trimming , deheading old blooms , etc. just fill it up and take it and empty it on the compost pile. They are not heavy and easy to tote around on your hip 😜. I’m sure you know all of that but I just wanted to add a comment and mainly say , I love watching you! I have just recently found your site , I would love to come and hang out with you in your yard and watch and learn from you ! You’re my kind of yard lady! I just wish I had my husband to be out helping me like yours does! Can I bring him and y’all “try” and teach him a thing or two ?!!! I’m sure you have done this already but I would love for you to show your yard when you have it all put together in each season , I know it must be beautiful ! Sorry for the long comment !

The baskets would last a bit longer if they were raised up off the ground. You can purchase (or maybe make?) little triangular “pot feet,” about 3/4” thick and a couple of inches long and wide. Just place 3 or 4 of these under the basket; use more for larger pots. They also protect a wooden deck from water remaining under pots after watering. Another alternative solution is to use the wire stands, about 2” high, available at Dollar stores. Some have legs, and some have wheels!! Whatever you can figure out that will allow the water to dry up, rather than pool under and rot the baskets. Another tip: I place a few of the plastic 6-pack containers, or some of the small plastic pots, upside-down, in the bottom of large pots before I fill them with soil. Saves on soil, and makes the big pots a bit lighter to lift and carry. Also, to create a reservoir of water: using a pot without drainage holes in the bottom, I drill several holes a couple of inches up the sides of the pot, place the containers (as mentioned above) upside down in the bottom, then add the soil. 🤗 Happy gardening!!❤️

I save many of the very small individual and compartmentalized pots (4-packs & 6-packs) that the flowers & vegetable plants are sold in, to use as seed-starting containers in the spring, to start zinnias, cosmos, morning glories, etc. The quart size pots I use for going around my flower beds, and gathering little baby seedlings ("freebies") from flowers like blue ageratum (coming up for over 7 years in a row, around my birdbath), violas, that I find growing. I put them in the quart pots and let them get bigger, to transplant in empty spots around my flower beds, where I'd like to see them bloom and reseed. I always keep a couple of regular sized planters filled with soil, that I don't plant anything in. As summer goes by, and a pot or hanging basket of portulaca's (or snapdragons I have planted in the garden) flowers go to seed, I gather these seeds and throw them in the planter with soil only. One for the portulaca seeds, one for the snapdragons, etc. Then the following Spring, you have all these baby plants coming up that you can thin out (even put in the empty 4-packs/6-packs), let them grow a bit bigger, and transplant to wherever you need them! You can't imagine how many flowers you can get this way. I even had a pot that I threw petunia seeds in, and tons of baby petunia seedlings popped up in the Spring! And mind you, I live in SW PA, very cold winters. With the ageratum, and plants like verbena bonariensis, I usually just crumble a flower head that's gone to seed, over the area where I'd like to see it come up next year.

Do you plant your flower seeds in the ground now in the winter? I’m in Illinois wondering if the seeds will survive?
@suzannefronzaglio2427
@suzannefronzaglio2427 3 года назад
@@helenoleksyn5198 no, I don't plant any seeds in the ground now, in the fall. But the pots that I dump seeds in (portulaca seeds and petunia, snapdragon seeds) aren't even covered in dirt. I just drop them on top, and in the Spring, those pots are bursting with baby seedlings. Around my birdbath, the blue ageratum that is drying up and going to seed, I just grab a flower head of dried seeds and sprinkle them around the birdbath, trying to evenly distribute them around it. I don't rake the seeds in or cover with dirt. And they'll come up again next year. I just started moving the blue ageratum "freebies" to my back yard flower beds, to get them growing there too. The verbena bonariensis self-sows everywhere too. I don't mulch the flowerbeds, and my sister says that's why the plants self-sow so easily. But I did use mulch last year around my birdbath planting, and the ageratum still came up this year.

Great ideas, Linda. Please be sure to clean the pots before putting new plants in there. A diluted bleach solution should do the trick - clean away all residual soil & other matter -- this will help prevent the transfer of any diseases or pests that may be in the old soil that clings to the sides & bottom of the pot.

I save my nursery pots as well, but usually just to weed and help me pick up leaves in the garden. Now, I have 5 additional reasons to explain to my husband why I need to keep "all of those pots"! Linda, your videos are always filled with such great content, but what I'd really like to know, is where did you purchase that gorgeous shelving unit behind you, in the house? Just consider me your nosy neighbor. :-)

Great idea, where do you get them from other than buying a high plant?
