Priscilla, I agree about it being a high point in one's life. I met Ned in 1991 and attended his ACTAL one week seminar in Lake Lure. I am still using his whole brain thinking as part of my approach to coaching leaders all these years later. And it's so wonderful when others become aware of how they and others think and that differences can be good.

Has anyone added up how much of your time advertising takes out of every hour you spend watching tv... 21minutes every hour is taken up by ads. this means they waste hours and hours of our time. we should be paid more for that time for what we get in return. How much do you get paid per hour? the time you spend watching their ads makes every show really expensive to watch, money wise and time wise. A lot of time. if you have foxtel as well even worse because you are already paying to watch repeat after repeat....I know, off topic but it just made me think about other ways ours brains time gets wasted. In short. Using your mind has a new name : mind hack. My view is that Most people are in auto pilot..therefore most people walk the same roads. But in this day and age where the norm is manipulated with stripped down yoga, travelling the world to avoid travelling yourself and fake safe wanderlust..fake copy paste 'open mindedness identities..makes people think they are different..whilst collectively all doing and being the same.. stuck in cognitive bias and copy paste lives. The level of self manipulation is insane.

For many years I have heard two conflicting messages: 1..."take charge of your life" from the self-help industry, ...and... 2..."surrender control of your life to your higher power/God." from spiritual teachers. Which one of these applies to hacking our lazy brains?
@annherrmann-nehdi7094
@annherrmann-nehdi7094 7 лет назад
Marshall, by hacking your lazy brain you free yourself up to do whichever you prefer-- and you will be more cognizant of it in the process. If you pay attention to your thinking and your brain, you will be in better touch with all aspects of yourself, including your spiritual self if that is what you are seeking.

At 13:48 she says all the main points. I'm sorry to say that this talk is pretty worthless considering it's lenght. No hacks here, no new science, nothing revealing (at least for logically thinking people). For normal, healthy people the only tip from Ann is "be aware, be self conscious, don't use autopilot that much". For the people that want to hack their brains the most - the ones with depression or diseases that impede thinking and cognivite abilities it's absolutely useless. The most essential thing to know about the brain is that our mood and cognitive abilities depend on neurochemical balance (specifically neurotransmitters), overall good health, diet, physical activity, a bit of social interaction and lastly - influence of environment.
@dennisr.levesque2320
@dennisr.levesque2320 6 лет назад
I can see that you're in the "scientific auto-pilot" mode. You need to hack your brain and examine the human side of it. You are human, aren't you? Do you have any evidence to support your humanness? Please share; I'd like to examine that too.

I disagree. With depression/anxiety especially, your mind frequently goes to autopilot when it ruminates. Most of the time, you don't even realize why you were "happy" one minute and now you are thinking about how to die painlessly and if anyone will care. It can happen in a second. But if you use "slow thinking" (paying attention to your thinking), you can really start to pinpoint the moments when those thoughts first appear, and let them go. You can choose to think about something else or do an activity that distracts you. It's not a cure, and it takes daily practice... but it makes a huge difference.
@indigoziona
@indigoziona 5 лет назад
I disagree with the OP. I've been struggling with depression and anxiety this year and breaking free of autopilot has been one of the main tools that has really helped. The essence of CBT is challenging assumptions and seeing other possibilities - like the assumption reversal she talls about early on. Being able to at least entertain other ways of thinking shows a person that a different world is possible. Also I blocked Facebook from 10 in the evening and all day on weekdays and it's really helped me free myself from depressed scrolling.

This boils down to "observe yourself and step outside of the routine". I was expecting a more "wow" insight - - it's fairly obvious, and doesn't take a PhD, to realize that to keep life interesting you need to do new things, meet new people, to ask questions, to imagine and wonder and explore, and this all takes a certain level of self-awareness - - basic stuff for a healthy life. Nothing new here.

lol, maybe not everyone is wise as you, did you think of that?.... Oh, btw, your summary of what she said is inaccurate and completely misses the point she is making, the ghost summary you do provide is patently incorrect(that's giving you credit for having a reasonable definition of 'self awareness', which is not certain. And also not hyphenated), aaand you don't know how to punctuate. Seems as though you may be stuck on autopilot, leaving disparaging comments on RU-vid. Ironic. Piece
