Em7 - Fmaj7 - Em7/G - Dm7 When you played the bare melody, I immediately heard it in Em, not CM. It's kind of a retro 70s approach but those were my high school years, and I'm perpetually stuck thinking that early Yes is cool. 😎😂

Incomplete chords (where not all notes of the chord are present) are wonderful things, as they add ambiguity. You described C G B as a "C major 7th", but it's also an incomplete G major over C in the bass (C pedal) - it's either, and both. Add in the "missing" E, or the "missing" D and it becomes less ambiguous - and (personal opinion) less interesting Great video Guy - lots to unpack in it

Thank you very much Guy. I have recently bought your course "How to Write Music" (which is currently on offer everyone). The course is brilliant for someone like me who has always played by ear, but needed some music theory, albeit not enough to be overwhelmed. You have introduced me to the circle of fifths. I have met them and introduced myself. What a lightbulb moment. I now know in which direction my chords should be going when composing and this has been a revelation. I can't thank you enough.

If I were to title this set of works in progress, I'd call it "moods of a villager" - it feels like a person's theme, someone who's just your normal everyday person you'd meet in a backwoods village. I can imagine you'd be able to use this with any set of motifs or themes and create an entire story based on any particular character with the right motif.

When you played those first two notes at the beginning with no context or metronome I instinctively knew the G was on the 1 and not the E (with the E being on the previous 4). How, I don't know. But maybe because the G was slightly louder. But even then, the E could have still been on the one even though the G was slightly louder and what a different tune that would have been.

Q: Does the melody presented necessarily have to be in C major? I guess as there's no F played it could also be in G major, A minor or E minor scales? Probably there's a whole bunch of modes with e,g,b,a and c naturals in that it might work over as well?

Guy, you have no idea how timely this video was for me. I'm working on a keyboard part that's so basic (a funk piece with a Fender Rhodes), I've been stuck trying to move it along. A bit weird how simple things can become ruts until we shift or perspective. I would love for you to do a deep dive into chord progressions if you haven't already. I'll have to look into that. Thanks, hope you are well.
