James Matthews yes.he sure could..in A Dark Darkness he played a killer but with impeccable manners he wuld always say " I'm sorry old chap, but I'm afraid I'll have to behead you!"
Ya James Mason was notning less than BRILLIANT in the Stanley Kubrick directed "LOLITA"! That look he gave to a young Sue Lyon in "mother" Shelly Winters's back yard was priceless.
why no talent British actors like Danny Day Lewis are reaping Oscars like no tomorrow while truly great British actors like James Mason were not given the time of day? Sure as heck beats me!
'no talent Danny Day Lewis'. Well, if that isn't the most ignorant post I've ever read. What kind of idiot posts such drivel ? You redeemed yourself somewhat re the 'great James Mason', so I guess you aren't all bad.
Dan Duryea was the most under rated actor in the history of hollywood. He deserved so much more credit than he ever got. Anyone who could play the parts that he did with such belivability and 180 degrees from his real life self deserved so much more reccognition, He's absolutly one of my favorite actors of all time ... "Jeepers, Johnny , I just love you" . Joan Bennett and Dan Duryea with Edward G. Robinson in "Scarlet Street" is one of my favoirite movies. And no actor in Hollywood had a better bit*h slap than Dan....wack wack ..lol.
This wasn't so much a film noir as an love story. As a kid, I loved gangster movies but my uncle and aunts knew that all they had to say to stop me asking them to take me to the picture house was that it was a love movie and I quit pestering them. There was far too much doctoring and kissing in this one and not enough noir. Sure, the doc was a man deep in over his head but he was no innocent. Yes, there was a woman but not fatale enough and more Ingrid Bergman-like as in Casablanca. I suppose the surprise ending was to show the audience of its day that crime does not pay. A somewhat dull romantic melodrama which still turns me off.
@proudbluestaterful "mason was gorgeous, and a voice to die for". How often, then, would one die when, in North by Northwest the two antagonists finally meet? The Englishman James Mason, employing the upper register of the Queen's English, and the Englishman Cary Grant, also employing the upper register of the Queen's English. (Unfortunately, their director, Alfred Hitchcock, also from England, did not join their conversation but only had one of his usual cameo appearances in the beginning. And one of the nicest ones, at that.)
Just like in the old time movie theatre, the sound goes out of sink; and then in the modern age of the computer--the blue screen of death.... I thought the motivation for returning from Mexico was weak. I thought him taking the money and moving to Mexico with Laura seemed a reasonable possible conclusion. The end was sort of an ending worthy of John O'Hara story... about an appointment. The protagonist is to meet death, only to run away and find death at another location. Not a bad movie.
Excellent Film. I really enjoyed it. I always liked James Mason's Acting. The film had a good Cast, story, Direction and music score by Frank Skinner. Thanks for the upload. Out.
@@MyImmaculateQueen He definitely had a lot of great films. It is a treat to be able find a "new movie" from a favorite star and youtube makes it quite easy and fun! Good luck!
There was such balance in this movie with light and dark, drama and simplicity, stealing and benevolence, life and death, with an ending that did not fit our expectation. What a really good film that we were fortunate to find this evening. Thank you, Vincent LoPresti .
That's what snagged me. They both cover many genres of film making and casting them together is a nice touch. Just wish the effort here produced a better quality offering. I appreciate the work and time, thanks for the upload.
mohammad davoudian -- You can put James Mason in Mexico, but you can't take the English gentleman out of James Mason. English actor's in his day had class.
Thank you for sharing. What a cast! Dan Duryea did "China Smith (TV), William Conrad "Cannon" (TV)Rock Hudson became an Icon, Jack Elam always an asset, King Donovan "The Body Snatchers' (1956) and other big movies, James Mason "Lolita" (1962). Ms. Marta Toren, a Swedish actor died in 1957 of a Cerebral hemorrhage (May 21, 1925-February 19, 1957). James Best "The Dukes of Hazzard"(TV). Just a dash of what these acomplished actors left for us to enjoy. Happy viewing from Las Vegas October 05, 2018
mason Duryea William Conrad and elam thanks. the film noir foundation has an interview with a son of Duryea. the weasel on screen was according to his son a devoted family man, faithful PTA member and lived a quiet happy life thanks for running this.
It's a truism that in Hollyweird the actors who nornally play villains are usually the best people in real life. Brian Donleavy, who played smooth villains from the 1930's through at least the 1950's was another actor of this type.
Mason had a low opinion of some of his movies but he wasn't in a position to improve their quality: he was always worth watching and listening to no matter how bad was his material.
Very Good movie but the ending sucked. Should of had them back in the village taking care of the people there, and of course, both of them living happy ever after.
Garyb3397 James Best is the guy who hits Mason at the end all right, but Gene was talking about the truck driver at the beginning, just after Mason killed Jack Elam, definitely Rock Hudson!
Geoffroy Mazeau Didn't notice the driver at the beginning, but since I've always thought Rock Hudson was most boring star to ever grace a movie screen when he was big, it's no wonder I didn't notice him hear. But Best was talented - and equally hot, in my opinion. Easy to spot.
Im a straight male and i get to feeling a bit gay when i see , and listen to that great voice of James Mason . But I really really get the hots for Marta Toren . I can't understand how you find that mug Duryea handsome .
The ending was horrible - truly horrible. They go back, he gives back the money then shoots the man, walks out without the money, she's thrilled they'll be going back to the village, he walks out into the street, gets hits by a truck and dies. The end. A village with a hospital and no doctor. A town and a little boy waiting for them to return. Yes, this was the worst movie i've seen in years!
@@hopeland5739 IMO the only bad part is that he didn't take the money.🤣 Of course that was to show that he'd found happiness without it. Seriously, when you go to watch a Duryea & Mason movie are you really wanting to see a happy day in the neighborhood?
It was a real treat seeing William Conrad in this flick. He was the voice of radio back in the day. For those who are old enough to remember The Richard Diamond series and the Thin Man on the radio. He always had that distinguished, deep voice. They even used his voice on the original TV episodes of "The Fugitive" starring David Jansen. He would introduce each episode.
William Conrad was a carbon copy of my father. one white skinned & my father a beautiful earth tone color. love a mustache on a man. say it again, I love a mustache on a man.
great movie. no one gets the money but the cops. did the english-speaking mexican child die or just left lying in the bed? Dan is always playing the bad guy.
u know today, there doesnt even seem to be men and women that could look this mature physically speaking. they all have teen looking faces and builds, even as adults. could we even find people today if we wanted to make a mock noir?
Damn,..... wish I could have been a gangster back then and there. Having an "angle" on some "deal" that's our "meal ticket" would do much for one's career. Easy scores, easy women, easy does it! Don't have to hurt people with violence, just use their own greed, and ignorance. That hurts way deeper than a hollow point. Ethnicities have nothing to do with it, every culture has it's hidden criminal guilds. They are essentially the same, no matter what the origin.
Oh! but gangsters and violence go together. I lost count of the victims of gunshots in this movie alone. No, they were always bad and ruthless. You think style and big shot talk will get you someplace with these guys? Better stick to snazzy scripts to go with a bespoke double-breasted suit ... and watching movies.
Not a particularly good movie despite James Mason in the cast. The real pity is that the sound is out of sync with the actors' mouths moving and that Dan Duryea has such a small part.
Indeed . I remember her in the great classic film The Third Man with Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton . You probably already read this but i give you the link anyway. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alida_Valli
Agree, I thought it was Alida. Lovely both were and sadly Toren passed away not long after this film. Really a good one too, first time seeing One Way Street. Great cast all the way.
Interesting, the way the doctor dealt with crooks he changes locations and finds himself, still patching up crooks, like fate or karma ,Like a person moving here after living in a violent place say the middle east, and he is killed by a terrorist attack, here
nicely done to be sure,&a good cast the story lovely. the climax happened quikly..just when you think the killings over Bang! the honest guy gets hit by car, downer!
Marta was just 25 when this was filmed. She was Swedish. Sadly, she died very young - just a few years after she starred in this film - of a cerebral hemorrhage.
+Gilda Marlowe MMMMM .... another smack on hius kisser ...., MaMa mia ..!!!!,,,,CBB ( cold blooded babie ) " GILDA = FULL & TOTAL CONTROL ..... salvadordajon@gmail.com ..... Gilda it's as the way your standing n looking over you back door in preperation.... awaiting reply
Belinda Carlisle is mason's daughter in law amazing fact.... That young Mexican kid steals the show he is quality..... Spring and Port Wine Bad Man's River Age of Consent Georgy Girl Lolita and of course 5 Fingers all great JM movies
William Comrad was always an excellent villain in Film Noir. His gunslinger in THE KILLERS (1946) and this treacherous Ollie prove it. Strange little Film Noir particularly well directed
Marta Toren was a natural beauty . yet somehow , yes it is the directors fault . She is forcing smiling too much in second part of the movie . It doesn't do justice to her loveliness or her acting . I've seen her in other movies and she is more realistic in her acting style .
If LEAVING your country or the country you love is the pre-condition for having a lot of money, I ask myself, what the hell is the USE of all that money anyway? Only a FOOL would go for such a proposition. Not ME.
William Conrad: In his second role in a movie, he was Max, one of the two merciless henchmen in THE KILLERS (1946) who kill "the Swede" Andreson played by Burt Lancaster.
Great movie. Sad ending. Terrific music, with a Spanish flavor when appropriate. The girl was like the one in "The Third Man" or the one who is killed in "The 39 Steps"
