This short presentation depicts two ends of the spectrum regarding experimental aircraft construction: building a complete aircraft in 1 week on one hand; and taking 17 years to build a scratch built B17 bomber replica on the other. See how both of these scenarios were accomplished. While these efforts represent the extreme sides of building efforts, they demonstrate the wide avenue that homebuilders have in aircraft construction!

Triangle B on the tail of Bally's bomber pays tribute to the 92 bomb group 8th air Force which my father was a top turit Gunner and engineer with the 326 squadron . I thank him for using triangle B on his plane.

It surprises me that there isn't any video of the Bally Bomber actually flying. I presume it flew into & out of Oshkosh?

Did no one get video of the Bally Bomber coming into Oshkosh?

The Bally Bomber website is down. Unfortunately he has passed away.

I think that the biggest issue with the one week wonder is potential for folks to thing that this is an easy and quick process. I spent a lot of time at Oshkosh this year watching this particular aircraft come together and have seen the previous build as well. I always come away with the feeling that it is doing more damage than good, but that is just my opinion. They have dozens of volunteers and some of them have built a one week wonder previously and are quick. I watched the newer volunteers at some stages having a lot of problems with the plans and orienting parts and there was a lot of intervention by the expert builder from the company. They also had engine experts to get the power plant installed and of course the $20-30,000 instrument panel was already put together. They barely made the 6 day goal, but they did it. The average for a “real” builder will be years, a shit-ton of money and probably lots of support calls. I would love to see a one week wonder with 2-3 people building something to taxi.

@SpeedRacer 650 Yes of course the Government and the Stasi. In fact we should just ban it all together and lock them all up after breaking their knee caps. Damn dreamers.... Now if you don't mind, I will be getting back to building my plane I am getting distracted by over-reaction...

SpeedRacer 650 I simply stated my opinion and indicated it was just that. I watched this build for hours on site and the first one for hours on site. I talked to the volunteers. I popped rivets. I understand the journey as I have been doing it myself for years. At the same time I know that only one in four projects are completed after spending years and potentially a lot of money trying. That represents hundreds of projects per year based on the number of plans and kits purchased vs the number of registrations. I gave a presentation on this at AirVenture in 2014 and did the research. EAA probably didn’t like the numbers given, but it is what it is. I don’t think that my comment was negative to builders wanting to get involved, I am saying that this particular build is not a representation of a typical project. I would love to see a one week wonder with a couple of people and maybe a $1000 panel instead of a $45000 one.

I was wondering why an 1,800 pound plane was having trouble flying with 4 engines making 80 hp each, but it must be because they removed the gearboxes.

idontcare80 yeah, it is direct drive. They couldnt fit the gearboxes and still have it look right. I talked to the guy at Airventure and he said about 40hp per engine is what they were getting.

It’s a death trap. I’m happy it isn’t being flown any more. It’s an amazing accomplishment to have built I’d hate to see him killed trying to live up to the hype.

Dixon, Illinois is the home of my favorite embezzler, Rita Crundwell. In 25 years as the comptroller for Dixon, she skimmed 53 million dollars. She's in the big house for the rest of her life, and it's going to be a long one: Dixon is garnishing her prison wages, and at the rate they're getting, they figure it'll take about 100,000 years to pay it all back.

Love the B17 ... but as a two seater.

Yeah, seems like there'd be room for a tandem cockpit.

Enlarge by 20%, re-engine ... yeah. At present those number are kinda weird. Chugging it down with four ULPower engines and still cruising at only about 100mph? something's way off. The Colomban Cri-Cri cruises at 140 on two chainsaw engines. Something's off. Looks kewl, though.

Propeller efficiency is complex, but 3k is an ok rough rule. Keeping the tips out of transonic is a more accurate upper limit. A four-blade would be more effective in this scale and far easier to balance, but would lack visual authenticity. Still, the originals were variable pitch. These are not, so 4-blade might take up some of the performance gap. Going from 33% to 40% with different engines would allow tandem seating, higher perf numbers and better fuel efficiency. All that said, this builder has done an amazing thing and fully deserves to strut. I always wanted to do a scale 747, with Bladon jet turbines modified into turbofans ... just for the freak factor call it "The Princess of the Skies".
