"Stop giving social media sites free content" so true!!

As a dancer Instagram is a hell hole. I am afraid that people will be unable to sit through a full length performance because of how bad everyone’s attention span has gotten. Will people really sit through a nutcracker or a concert dance performance when they are so used to just consuming 30 seconds of movement and them moving on. It’s so stressful because dancers also keep getting told we need an Instagram presence to be successful but I care more about developing my movement and choreography skills than getting a bunch of shallow likes. On another note it ruins dancers self esteem. For visual artists I feel it ruins self esteem of ur abilities but for dancers our art is our BODIES. We are made to feel we are not good enough as human beings not just our art. :( it’s so sad. I’m getting off this shit. Thank you so much ur an angel also this hairstyle looks so good on you ❤️❤️

I can imagine how awful it must be for performing artists. I too often worry about our collective attention span, but hopefully in a different context, away from digital devices, people will still be willing to enjoy concerts or theater productions. Although I always want to smack those people in the cinema who have their smartphones on for the entire movie. You did the right thing. All the best for you and your art!! 💚

I do believe what you said about attention spans shrinking. I have watched young family members consume internet since they were 1 year old, and had hardly any other firm of play. You can;t seem to get them into anything that takes even a bit of effort or attention. Every thrill they seek had better be instant, and they want nothing of doing anything with others…. it’s actually frightening.
@parsellart7805
@parsellart7805 2 года назад
They are tying the short attention spans on ADHD which a lot of people have and also there was a recent study done through Stanford University and they found that people who scroll and scroll through their cell phones are getting ADHD where they did not have it before. So you are so right about all of that.

As an artist who is relatively slow and steady in my work, the frenetic pace of social media is a nightmare, and I don't even think I'm capable of using it fast enough for their algorithm. I'm just starting my business so I'm trying to decide where to put my efforts and I really appreciate your advice. I'm glad you made this video because it's giving me confidence that more people will eventually reject social media like Instagram. It's just unsustainable, and it's also interesting what you said about devaluation of art. I've heard that from other RU-vidrs as well and I think you are right. That's very very bad for the long-term health of the industry.

Personally I love Pinterest as a slow but steady traffic driver to my website. Things I posted years ago still bring people to my website. I love my work and don’t want it to “die” within 48 hours. I want it to continue to inspire and help others as long as it can. That’s why I blog and use Pinterest.

@@wplants9793 Thank you for posting this. I feel like I'm drowning on Instagram. I feel like I need to post constantly to barely get any traffic at all. I mean, it's a slow climb...but exhausting! I'm on Pinterest, so I'll try to focus on that more :-)

I noticed as an artist but also in Gardening which I also studied. How much is expected to be done for free, as volunteers. I think social media has in a way made that worse. People think you make art for free, like "art therapy". I think we have this idea that if somebody enjoy their work they shouldn't get paid or something. I think you have to be clear you expect to get paid etc.
@playalot86

Man, I feel this comment. I've been trying to pay my bills with my art since 2015. I feel like I've done all I can on social media, but it seems like nobody cares, haha. I'm an artist, guitarist and writer. I do not use social media anymore. I had a good sales year in 2020 and in 2021, but now my Ebay store is halted. I get watchers, but... Jesus... it's just so much work to maintain all of these stupid profiles... trying to sell online and find that one buyer is a pain in the ass...
@timdanyo898
@timdanyo898 2 года назад
I thought I was just being "lazy" on Instagram, but deep down it felt like a waste of time and a lesson in futility. Social media sites like Instagram can be a great search tool, but for it to be a business hub is foolish because it's out of the artist's control and it is designed to addict the viewer to scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, into infinity. How can detailed and quality art really live on a platform that creates a millisecond attention span?
@AMO17

I'm working on leaving instagram. Losing more followers than I can replace and the stuff I spend days or weeks to do barely gets any activity of late. Could be the algorithm, could just be I suck lol. Either way, I'm sick of the mental gymnastics and no benefits to dealing with it. I just hope my eventual business is more successful than my insta page.

Love it - I have tried to start with social media - but for the creative person it was demanding more and more and more. The pace you can not keep up with unless you have the corp world behind you, and people working on it full time. I gave up on it. Now, I only post what I want when I want it - And focus on creating and running my own website - it is just the start of my journey - and I don't really know where it will take me, but it's exciting. I want the content I create - to be mine - and in a place which I can control. It is there for people to find, and not vanish under millions of other posts under the algorithm. THANK YOU for sharing Julia!

In a way a wake up call since I myself have felt the burden of satisfying the algorithm. I am working full time with painting abstracts a hobby of mine. Joining a POD platform pushed me into the must of having a social media account, taking care of hashtags, creating attractive mockups etc etc, that I started to neglect my hooby. The few hours during the week and then the weekend was all about placing new posts, connecting the different content. And it's just to much. Absolute no satisfaction, just a big burden. Regardless of the above I will keep the accounts but will stop feeding the algorithm with constant posting and spend the time exploring art. And that's what makes me happy! 🙂

Yay! Have been looking forward to more. Be wary, even youtube may try to 'convert' over to social media style - I just don't trust the giant corporate technocracies with all they have done. Hang onto your content, your hard work and be prepared to go to more free avenues if necessary. Why I am a fan Julia is not only your lovely art but your willingness to think for yourself! And you stand up for it, and reason, so refreshing in this "follower"-world.

I know, RU-vid is a dangerous playground, too. It has a lot of the same gamification features and the feed, and they keep track of you everywhere. I definitely don't trust Google any more than the others. I'm always aware of the downsides of YT, and I hope people will tell me when I fail to do so! Dang, I had planned a series of clickbaity videos with lifestyle and vlogging content after the summer, I guess I can forget about that now... ;-)) Thanks so much for your kind words, I truly appreciate it. I'm glad there are others out there who value the same things.

I have been thinking about how effective a computer would be for my work. Many other sites of artists seem to agree with your opinion. The creation of the sites takes time away from the art making. If you are a different type of artist like a cut/ paste, fashion, crafts, or jewelry makes an easier to use computers. Art is not free, it comes from our hearts.

I'm of the generation that used to go to bookshops, to record shops, public lectures, belong to film societies and so on. All these events involved real people, were exciting. I value knowledge and use YT but try to catch myself if I am getting sidetracked, discipline seems essential, just as in thinking which is another endless loop.

Thank you for this video. It opened my eyes. I lost my writing muse to what I thought was my grandfathers passing away in the same year but I think it was a combo of social media addiction and my previous job. I took a risk, quit that job and working on my mental health and staying home. I'm thinking seriously about disabling social media off my phone. (I mainly use IG, but I also use discord and youtube and I know I'll be keeping those for exclusive community things) I want to go back to when I was in school, when I had no social media's and just my creativity. I wrote and published a book back in school with no social media interruption and I feel I need to go back to that mental place.

Other than YT---- I never signed up for Social Media. I live near Silicon Valley, and have worked in the SF Bay Area for most of my working years. I was the top listing on Google for two years but did not get even one contact. Programmers who built the tech system warned me decades ago about Big Tech platforms. 😁 It was other artists who let me down the most. I was very hopefull that a creative woodworker would be in demand in such a rich area. Not that artists are financially rich; but my artframes were not as desirable to artists as stock frame store production frames.

@@NatureSketchbook Well, I did get a couple kids in the mean while and that has a lot to do as well, plus there is a lot more competition these days. But my lack of focus and motivation is definitely related. Even the fact of wanting to do too many things at a time and actually doing none is caused by too many stimuli.

Short attention spans have made that video format the norm on RU-vid and I always feel unsatisfied from those videos. This long format adds more depth to the topic that is being talked about and I feel more connected to the speaker because it feels like a conversation.

The only thing I don't like social media like instagram and tiktok is algorithm is change quickly fast that is hard to catch up and change strategies to keep the game up. Facebook is already too clutered and feels competitive to put your art on it. It takes a lot energy to keep updating that you put most of your time on social media instead. Perhaps this is just all my personal thoughts and feelings.

I really appreciate all your videos on this subject. I definitely am someone who is having trouble accepting the change in how the internet is used, I do wish it were the 90's again! I take very lengthy breaks from social media. I only have twitter and instagram, and honestly, I'm more addicted to instagram as a user rather than an artist (these days- because I used to be more addicted as an artist and the "grind"). I have to take it off my phone. It's the videos, it's like I'm hypnotized. Anyway, I really am very anti-social media. I'm just not sure though how to proceed because I am not good with communicating with people. Right now I'm considering uploading to my website only, and putting a lot of effort into it, and see if SEO brings who my people are to my work. My work is very personal and when I put it out there I feel "heard" but I also feel exposed. Nothing is revealing about it, it's just the intent behind making it is personal. I don't know where I fit. I also dislike my art getting grabbed from my site by bots or other people and put on Pinterest or other sites because sometimes I want to retire a piece, but the internet makes it last forever. I've been trying to work this out for a very long time.

I did street art 12 times on Pacific Ave. Each time I put out art frames while I handcrafted chopsticks. I thought that I would engage artists and possibly we would discuss how I made the frames. That year I was working with the Architect of the Year in the US doing my usual high end custom woodworking and finish carpentry. The frames were my art, and an opportunity to make direct contact in my community with others who appreciate such things. This was separate marketing from the Internet marketing group I was associated with. One couple talked with me for a half an hour. They traveled the world looking for suppliers of framing material, and they sold their framing material worldwide as well. They complimented me by saying my frames were the nicest they had seen in the world. I guess that is one reason the architect used me. 😁 We both had difficulty being found on social media. We are only 30 minutes from Silicon Valley. The tech billionaires could not find us. 😁

I found blogs to have the same problem in that you need followers, you need to follow and you need to comment on other blogs. Felt like a similar pressure too to post regularly and to also say something interesting to spark comments. As well it seemed hard to get anyone to comment. I noticed blogs that are quite interesting with no comments. Also it feels as if everyone is an artist these days or trying to sell things they made. With just a few people selling crazy well and sometimes I can't figure out why. I do find instagram is just too fast for clicking hearts. With few comments which is sad. Giving people as you said a fast hit - they have been liked - but it's not a real interaction. Also are people going to artist blogs? I noticed many artist left the blogs
@NatureSketchbook
@NatureSketchbook 3 года назад
While it's true that you need someone to read your blog, blogs offer a chance to post long-form content that can't be scrolled through and consumed in one second or less. It gives you the chance to engage with your audience on a deeper level. Of course you need some kind of audience if you want to put your ideas out there and have success with it. It's actually quite difficult to write interesting blog posts that attract an audience. But it's a much more long-term audience than people randomly following you on social media. So once you have readers, they are more likely to stay. I've never found that I need to comment or like a lot on other people's blogs. I read them because they interest me, and if this interaction brings new readers to me, then this is a good side effect. And yes, people are still reading artist's blogs, and many artists are returning to them!

When I blogged in 2007 it was THE way to build community. In 2021 this is not the case. I focus on converting interested abs willing readers to be subscribers to my email list. I offer “freebies” that would be of value to them as a reason to get on my list. Then, if I have something to share (like a course of workshop or product) I offer it to my list and since they know and trust me, they are likely to give it a try. Consider Pinterest as a traffic driver, too!

Over time it's been made plain to me that some types of artists thrive in certain social media platforms. The question was whether or not I was one of those people, but it doesn't seem like it. If you want the recipe for success, though: 1. sexy 2. pink 3.?? 4. PROFIT

Hi Julia. 1st off, thank you for posting about your great decision and the process of it. 2nd, I'm wondering if you might have some good feedback on this topic about my situation as a musician (running my various projects as a record label). Do you think essentially it's the same approach as for visual artists: website and blog?
@NatureSketchbook
@NatureSketchbook 2 года назад
What I hear from my musician friends is that touring (if and when that is an option again) is still a very good way to build a fan base. A website is never wrong to have as a place to show all of your projects.

I’d be interested to hear more about your business approach with your blog and getting eyes on it. My understanding is that it’s harder these days to rank on the first page of Google search results, and that you need to buy ads. Is this your experience?
@NatureSketchbook
@NatureSketchbook 3 года назад
I have never bought ads, so I can't speak to that, and I'm not checking statistics or Google ranking very often. I simply try to write about interesting things that my audience wants to read (and I ask them about that and also try to build real relationships with my audience), and I put out new posts on a regular basis. And the same thing with videos. Actually having video content might help Google search results. But I'm definitely not an expert on that. Hope that helps somewhat. :)

Great, very informative. What about posting videos on Facebook, some people swear it’s better than RU-vid.

I personally wouldn’t touch Facebook with a long pointy stick, and I’m no expert on video engagement numbers. I‘d ask myself first if my audience is there and if I really want to use this service. If you have no objections to using the platform, try it out. ;-)

@@NatureSketchbook Thanks! I quit Facebook 8 years ago, but somehow for a year now I am back, but not for posting or keeping up with friends (though I do check a name now and again 👀 lol). Now I specifically use fb for local groups that deal with nature, hiking and herbs. I find it useful for that, for now. But was surprised to learn that fb has a full blown videos section and some praise it. I did get sucked in at first as a consumer, but soon quit watching their videos. Too much junk was popping up, was disorienting and wasteful, one video after another. I do wonder also if there is a need for creating a fb group for your audience where you’d perhaps connect more and it can be more intimate than a public page. I was active on IG and was readying to put a lot of work and really make it “awesome”, but had my doubts. I couldn’t put it into words and glad I saw videos like yours that clarified what I was feeling, it’s really not worth giving away so much for such a greedy organization that doesn’t give back.

I’m thinking of dropping social media and finding a different way to publish my work and keep people updated. A blog is something I’m thinking of.. Do you think starting a free blog on Wordpress which I might then use to build on my website would work? It seems kind of expensive to start a website for what I’ve heard so im thinking if this is a good starting point

As far as making a website, which platforms would you recommend?
@NatureSketchbook

I'd buy a domain name and some webspace and set up a Wordpress site on it. My own website has run like this for over 10 years. Cargocollective is also a good choice for portfolio sites.

how do you create a website? i am an artist too but i want to create my own website though i dont know how
@NatureSketchbook
@NatureSketchbook 3 года назад
There are many resources about that available online. You can start with a free blog (like wordpress.com), use one of the portfolio sites out there, or get a domain with webspace and set up a site with Wordpress or Squarespace or any other service you like. Wordpress has many options, and you need a bit of technical knowledge, but I can fully recommend it, it's a very flexible and affordable solution.
