In this video I go through my first year using ue4 and ue5. I go through all the games that I made or started during that year. Previous to this I had only used unity 3d for about a year maybe. In this year I made anything from horror games, rage games, fighting games and 2d games.

Yo, I'm Jens and I'm a solo independent developer trying to make games and entertaining devlogs about how I make my games. I'm self taught in 3D modeling and game development with only some basic Java knowledge from university. I do this in my spare time as I work full time as an engineer so bare with me if my upload schedule is not as frequent as you (or I) would like it to be.

Stumbled onto your video whilst chilling from learning UE5 by watching tutorials about UE5 to relax XD Anyways, seems that our approaches to learning are totally different. Do u prefer Unreal over Unity ? Seems Unity is more lightweight and fits for indie games. I prefer the coding experience in C# too. In Unreal, blueprints seem weird and cant code inside ?

As an aspiring UE5 user, I have a legitimate question. Why do most of the games in this video look less than 1080p? And sometimes a little stuttery on the frame-rate? I'm not putting down your work at all, just genuinely curious why it doesn't look crystal clear like I expected from the engine.

No, I do all of that in blender (or sometimes use mixamo). however, i sometimes adjust animations in unreal!

nice tutorials man, but i wonder, why do you create your own models instead of just downloading or purchasing them ? isn't it much faster and more practical ? i reckon everything is available, and lot of stuff are free.

Thanks! Well there are a few reasons, mainly that I enjoy making models and if I make them myself I can make exactly what I want/need. However, I'm not totally against using other models, depending on the project I might purchase other assets. As you said it is more practical, especially when time is limited!

Approximately how many hours did you work on UE that year?

I am not sure, but I spent an average of maybe 1-3 hours a day I would guess. Some days 0 and others I could do 8h. Periodically I spent a lot of time editing videos instead

Are you wondering for UE5 specifically or just unreal engine in general? For unreal I use a lot of different resources but I would say Ryan Laley has a lot of great tutorials in regards to unreal. A lot of it is for UE4 but works just as well for UE5. Good luck!

Well at least you made something. I just got back to the game i started 1.5 year ago that i lost from a windows reinstall. I started all over again and it sucks trying to create something big when you only made 1 single shitty game where the enemies chase you but not even scary. 😂 Oh yeah that was made for a one week to make a game competition but i lost the project so i can't improve on it even if i wanted. Idk maybe there is a way to turn a game back into a project. 😂

You said unreal did not release your game. Why is that? Is thre any rule unreal decide to give permossoon at the end?

No you can export anything technically. Putting it on a storefront however is a whole separate issue. It sounds like he was getting a pretty nasty error when he was trying to export and he didn't find it worth the time to try and fix since the game was a hobby project for him.

lmaooo at game devs not needing to be worries for a while. the absoluted breakneck pace ai has developed over the last year and the way its only accelerating, game devs are low hanging fruit for AI. its a good day to be a dev savy with AI right now tho. definitely dont want to be a dev at a AAA studio tho

I need you to help me make a game! LOL the game is going to be a small open world game in a small town in the USA. the first phase of the game is going to be all melee PVP brawl ! like have you ever played the game The Warriors made by Rockstar that's the type of fighting I want the game to be like. We LOL have to nail down the fighting the mechanics just like the game The Warriors. We LOL will start off with hockey sticks, baseball bats, and small knives, trash cans. After we LOL get all that finished and nail down we will start on the second phase which we LOL would start to add guns and demonic creatures to the neighborhood. I want the characters size and shapes of the game to feel and look just like the game The Warriors but updated to a modern neighborhood in the United States. We Can do this! LOL
