Reminded me of when Adriene from yogawithadriene said "belly flops are welcome" just as I flopped down and started beating myself up about it. Here for all the flops!!

The Biggest Loser and Jillian Michaels had such a choke hold on me in my early 20s. The amount of times I was in the gym repeating ‘unless you faint, vomit or die KEEP GOING’ to myself. So damaging. Going to replace that now with ‘flopping counts as moving’ haha! I had the digital membership from April - July 2021 but was really guessing the metrics. I was enjoying it a lot so decided to take the plunge despite never having a consistent or healthy relationship with food or exercise. I’m almost at my 200th ride now and still love it. Especially if I am having a low day, it’s really good at getting me out of a funk. Love the concept of joyful movement.

Hi Lucy! This video really resonates with me, definitely had a complicated relationship with fitness and the pandemic made me have all sorts of worries in terms of just being cooped up inside but recently got back into my love of swimming and I totally agree - it’s all about the way it’s framed! And most importantly, I do it for me and no one else! Really appreciate you speaking about this and thank you for sharing ❤️

This video was like therapy. I feel as though you've articulated how I've been feeling for years. I've always been so terrified of getting into fitness for health after having such an unhealthy relationship with it since my early teens (early 2000s were intense). Joyful movement is definitely something I'll be looking into, thank you ❤️

Somehow found myself crying while watching this 🥲 I’ve hated exercise all my life because of everything you’ve mentioned! All the shame and all the pressure to see results just totally turned me off from exercising. I’ve tried recently to just be kind to myself and I celebrate any movement I make in the day, but the people around me kept telling me I wasn’t pushing myself hard enough! Thank you for talking about joyful movement!! This is the kind of energy I wish was more out in the world.

Fab and informative video Lucy! Totally agree with you with finding joyful movement. I was always someone who hated PE at school because I wasn’t competitive and wasn’t very good at it, so just assumed I hated exercising. But I signed up to a clubbersize class at my local gym (basically Zumba but with disco lights and glow sticks) and had so much fun 😂 I now go to the gym as well but have found the less pressure I put on myself the more I enjoy it and stick to it! I saw a TikTok where a girl was saying even if you just show up and go for a walk on a treadmill that’s more than enough, which is totally the mentality I’m taking about exercise now x

As someone who has hated her body for a long time and refused to exercise because "I'm bad at it" the concept of joyful movement is absolutely fascinating to me so thank you for bringing it to my attention! I relate so deeply with so much of what you've said in terms of noughties diet/exercise culture, sport in school, etc. Now I've hit my late 20s my body isn't doing what it used to any more. I'm now going swimming twice a week, I used to a lot when I was a kid but it dropped off, and trying to reframe my brain to make it something I do for fun, rather than something I need to do to punish myself and make myself thinner.

But how frickin wonderful to find joy and liberation and self care and respect at the other side of that!! 🤩 I’m definitely a bit behind you on the joyful movement journey, but I resonate so much with the first half of your story, so it gives me huge hope that someday not so far away I’ll be where you are now! 🌈 Thank you for sharing this, it really is inspiring. Honestly my relationship to movement changed drastically over lockdown, due to 2 factors; 1) omg my flat is so small I need OUT 2) my grandpa being able to walk around before lock down to barely being able to get up without needing a walker Movement is so important to me bc I've seen what not being able to do it looks like and that honestly scares the crap out of me. Like I want to be able to go wherever I want without too much issue, obv you get old and thats that, but like I don't want to FEEL old yaknow? So that gloomy place is where I started and ended up joining the gym and found that it became my me-time and escape from life. My mental health improved massively and although I do have a weight loss goal, as soon as I shifted it to "I want to be able to go up a mountain when I'm 60" and "I want to not die when I drag groceries back from the shop" and "wouldn't it be awesome if I was ready for the apocalypse? Gotta outrun the zombies". Likewise with food, shifting from "I can't eat that bc it'll make me X" to "if I eat that will I I enough energy for what I want to do next? Will I be hangry in an hour and also have a dodgy tummy for the next 24 hours?" As soon as I shifted to those more practical applications, I started getting more consistent. And also paying attention to how food made me feel was a game changer. Idk movement is a great way to gather Intel about your own body and how you can life hack your way into a better mood or more energy and other unforseen bonuses.

What an amazing video! It hit me right in the feels because my relationship with my body and exercising has been so weird. Growing up “skinny” meant that I could fly under the radar when it came to feeling like I needed to lose weight, but no one ever taught me that exercise was for anything else. And I was fairly uncoordinated and not good at sports… so my physical activity level was always not good. My body was basically just a meat suit I was dragging around and scared of for all of my teen years. No relationship whatsoever. Now that I’m an adult and I’m dealing with some health issues and weight gain, I’ve started repairing this relationship with my body and physical activity. Joyful movement is so important for this rebuilding… especially because it’s about my heart health not weight

This really really resonates with me. I had a horrible relationship with exercise and only ever did it to look a certain way or change my body. At the start of the first lockdown I randomly went on a run and have since fallen completely in love with it, celebrating my 2 year running anniversary a couple days ago (my friend baked me a cake!!!) I've never had a healthier relationship with a sport, it was such a good help for my mental health throughout the pandemic, I've joined a running society and have made so many lovely friends through it, and I've never gone for a run for the purpose of burning calories or losing weight. I'm so glad that you've also been able to find a form of movement that you truly enjoy and have a healthy relationship with 💙

Recently my grandmother passed away. In my household, I live with my grandpa, two nieces, and a nephew. (All struggling with “obesity” so said by the doctors) It’s been hard to navigate as (even though my grandpa is raising the kids for the most part now) I’ve taken on a very different role. The kids were recently told at the doctors that they are overweight. I don’t want to approach this subject poorly or do to these girls what was done to me when I was young. I love how you worded this and carefully approached such a difficult subject🧡

I know from experience that the best way to tackle this kind of thing is subtly. Encouraging exercise that is enjoyable without actually referring to it as exercising is a great place to start. Just going for a walk, going for a bike ride. Classing it as 'fun' and not a chore or something that 'needs' to be done is so important.

Love this joyful movement concept! I had a similar experience when I turn 30 last April and realised I had to start doing something or my body was going to fail. I've been waiting for knee surgery for a few years and the lack of movement during lockdown made it so much worse. I started with a personal trainer to keep me accountable and show me what to do and I found my love for strength training. I love the fact that my body is stronger when I'm on my period, that I can feel changes and pick up weights that were too heavy six weeks before and realise they're too easy now..

Ah Lucy everything you said about the peloton bike and movement/exercise generally is exactly how I feel about it too!! This was such a lovely video - thank you for taking so much time to make it. I got a peloton bike in December and honestly feel like it's changed my life too. I used to run but it never felt joyful at all, it was much more like a punishment. I would dread it every time because ultimately I'd made it mostly about weight loss/earning or burning food if I'm honest with myself. Nowadays I rarely run at all but I really enjoy getting on the bike and belting out some Hamilton/Wicked/Disney/00s Pop Punk classics! I never look at the calorie numbers either which is a huge mindset shift for me. I'm sure you've done it already but Cody's 20 minute Disney ride is literally pure joy. So glad you've found something you love!

I've been rewatching Lucy's videos because I find this channel genuinely comforting.. Lucy is just freakin' awesome and it's like hanging out with an old friend. I'm not directing this at her, it's just the first 18 minutes of this video triggered me a lil bit lol. I'm kind of glad that as a society we're moving on from this fear of the words "exercise" and "weight loss." Moving on from RU-vidrs feeling like they have to over-explain themselves for doing anything that even resembles an exercise for fear of being hung, drawn, and quartered by the toxic side of the body positivity/fat acceptance movement. As someone who's worked hard to lose 120 lbs through diet and exercise over the past 7 years, I'm so tired of people insinuating that anyone who wants to lose weight hates themselves. It was the opposite for me. It was self-love that pushed me to put the effort in. It was self-love that made me feel deserving of more than I was giving myself and it was self-love that made me believe I was worth putting the effort in for, day in and day out, for 7 years. I agree that diet culture has its bad sides and I like that it's not being tolerated anymore, but we should also acknowledge that healthy eating and exercise are good things for the body, full stop. Science doesn't care about feelings. "Joyful movement" is just a flowery term for exercise, and it's OK to like exercise. It's OK to want to lose weight. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. edited to add: this review of the bike was really, really well done btw. I knew nothing about the Peloton experience before I watched it because it never appealed to me. I find stationary bikes boring .. but I walked away from this video with a good amount of knowledge. Still not interested, but the video is fantastic for anyone curious about the Peloton!

I definitely relate to your past feelings of exercise/early PE memories. I hated PE with a passion!! I was always picked last for everything, got laughed at for running too slowly in relay races and the beep test still haunts my nightmares. It is such a disservice to people who might enjoy dancing or spinning etc who are made to feel they aren't good enough for movement just because they can't do high jump or the 100m race. We need better sports classes in schools and teachers who are willing to help everyone and not focus on the 2/3 students who they are hoping will be future Olympians. I discovered I love to move my body through fun music video choreography dance classes, yoga and walks. So glad you have found your movement mojo with the Peloton!

Totally agree! School PE has it so wrong, and I’m convinced puts more girls off sports/exercise/movement. I was probably one of the worst in my class at running at school, but never shown how to improve, being ignored for the popular/talented girls. After age 30 I’ve ran a few half marathons (slowly). So glad you’ve found something you like later too :)

Yep that makes so much sense! It would be great for the PE curriculum to get a big refresh. I've never heard of joyful movement before but a few years ago I found "Yoga with Adriene" here in youtube and she always said "do what feels good" on her videos, I believe she still does. So if that's a thing now, I want to say that it comes from her, or at least she has been saying that for years. Don't worry about exercise, just do what feels good for you. And while I'm here I want to also say Hi and Thanks so much for all your videos. You are a fantastic human. I can't say I completely relate to your journey and I don't know your struggles other than what I've heard you talk about over the years but I know that you are gorgeous and perfect on my (and so many other people's) eyes. Fck weight. I've had the opposite bias with stupid people asking me if I was anorexic, which hurt for a while. Unhappy people will always try to find a way to make you feel unhappy. Really interesting discussion. Never heard of joyful movement but sounds like it should be introduced into schools at a young age to encourage all kids regardless of their athletic abilities. I recently discovered "Grow With Jo" on RU-vid and I've started working out with her. Her enthusiasm and vibe is so infectious. She does indoor walking at home videos and themed dance along workouts and honestly she is so much fun. Her aim is to just get people moving, getting their steps in and having fun and see is so encouraging. It feels like you have your own personal trainer in your living room and it's like working out with a friend. She had a baby about 18 months ago and shows her post parteum belly and how she got her body back in shape. Truly motivational and so much fun and best of all it's free. Really recommend her to anyone who can't afford a Peleton bike or gym fees.

I really enjoyed this video Lucy. My life experience is different to yours but my inner monologue is surprisingly similar. I was a small, skinny teenager in the 1980's. I was useless at running and team sports but I loved gymnastics. However my back wasn't naturally vey flexible. Back then there wasn't much thought put into safety so I was pushed really hard to improve my flexibility. As I result I have had a lifetime of back problems and felt worthless. I have exercised all my life in an effort to stay slim and I've overdone it and ended up in severe pain with my back more times than I can count. Finally over the last couple of years I've learned to listen to my body and now I just do what feels good. I have a dog and we go for long walks every day and I love it. I love being outside in the fresh air (I live in the countryside) and, no matter what the weather, I always feel better after my walk. I no longer punish myself for not being super bendy and at the ripe old age of 53 I'm learning to appreciate having good health overall and I want to keep that for as long as I can. I hope future generations can be taught to appreciate the joy of movement from an early age and not beat themselves up for not being good enough.

I've had a difficult relationship with my body for over a decade, as a SA victim I've been struggling to feel my body as "beautiful" or even "mine" and I've either hated it or resented it for years, as if what happened was my body's fault while at the same time trying to keep it "appealing to the male gaze". For a couple of years now I've been trying to focus more on keeping a balanced diet and working on my mental health rather than on the physical aspect, but then a couple of months ago I went to visit my mum and the first thing she said after hello was "please don't be obese". Apparently I looked better when I was skipping meals and going to the gym everyday to make sure my abusive boyfriend didn't leave me. So that little comment set me back a bit. That quote about bodies being and instrument and not an ornament is kind of the mentality I'm trying to have nowadays where I don't try and convince myself that I look "beautiful no matter what" or anything, I just respect my body for all that it's done and keeps doing for me and I look after it the best I can

Hey Lucy- thank you so much for this video. I have also recently found my joyful movement method for the first time in my life. I’m 35 and it’s making such a difference to how my body feels in day to day life. I’m so happy to hear how much benefit you’re getting from this! The best leggings I own are from an Australian company called Muscle Nation and the material is thick and really holds you in and feels so secure. 10/10 recommend!

Peloton is the only cult I can support. I did do the hack for financial reasons and quickly found that I (an inexperienced fitness person) could figure out my output pretty well. So if you're worried about that but really cannot afford the Peloton bike then just give yourself some time to get used to what you're doing and it will come. I'm in my third trimester of pregnant now and the only hormonal meltdown I've had all pregnancy is that I had to have a break from rides!

I'm so happy there are more videos about joyful movement. Exercise really helps me cope with my anxiety and depression. But diet culture lead me to overexercise and unhealthy weight loss. Now I'm fat, enjoying movement regularly, and a lot happier.

Feel similar to what you described at the beginning. I enjoyed moving when I was younger outside of school but hated PE, doing team sports I was no good at and didn’t enjoy, with no choices to try other things. Teachers that didn’t give you any guidance if you weren’t naturally good, wearing a stupid netball skirt (why?!). Thoroughly believe no girls want to hate movement/exercise/sports but PE in the UK is (was?) so bad for so many, that girls just give up movement completely. Wasn’t until I was 29 that I did Couch to 5k and tried running after years of thinking I hated moving. I got a Peloton at Christmas and absolutely love it.

Agreed, immodest and ill fitting school gym kit really put the nail in the teenage self confidence coffin. Coinciding with puberty and having to communicate body changes to guardians in order to access things like period products or grooming items adds to the humiliation. I can’t be the only one who just wanted to disappear. Didn’t help that my school graded us for gym and the forth group was for people who where rubbish at it all and the children thought to be naughty, some of whom were good at sport. Recipe for success……….
@missvictoria62
@missvictoria62 2 года назад
@@dees3179 It just makes no sense that secondary school gym kit, when I was there anyway in 1997-2002, is so far from what anyone would wear to workout outside of school. It’s is such a sensitive time for some girls, and obviously has turned out that PE has been more damaging for many, than has benefited some. I feel so strongly about letting girls wear something they’re comfortable in and giving choices. If they’re keen to play netball, great! If they’ve got their period and want to do a slow yoga class, let them.

@@missvictoria62 yes! First day I ever had my period I had dance, drama and PE on my timetable. Mother quite correctly pointed out that it was unlikely to get worse so best get it over with, then I could cope with anything. Laudable. I got very good at faking being sick and also forging notes. Careful application of both meant I could avoid both physical exertion and also academic subjects whose teachers I didn't respect. Useful skills, but probably not what they were trying to teach.

(Haven’t watched the rest yet) I’ve never been sporty because of the embarrassment and shame of not being good at it. I never exercise. I definitely would go to the gym more if the layout was different. Why does all the cardio machines always have to be at the front with people having a 360 view of me wobbling on a treadmill?! I digress… you’ve convinced me to go on a nice walk today. Thank you 😊

I hadn’t heard of the term joyful movement before this but it turns out I have already been doing this anyway. I joined a gym in November as i wanted to go back spinning, running and get into lifting weights, purely as something for enjoyment and to improve my mental health. I’ve also started doing yoga at home more regularly. I love moving my body now more than ever. At school I hated PE because I didn’t like team sports and was a bit shy, this made me think I hated exercise and moving my body at the time. Just turns out I was doing the wrong type of movement, everyone finds joy in a different way, I’m glad you’ve found yours🙌 also now seriously considering buying a spin bike 😅

Hi, I relate however my relationship is complicated with exercise due to having a physical disability. I always felt made to exercise to strench and maintain muscle from 5 years old and this led to me feeling very unhappy around exercise and to be honest there was no joy. I also was excluded from sport/ PE and going to the gym (particular gyms that don't have trainers that can assist and even then its still limited). It just feels, too difficult, restrictive, a duty and thus not enjoyable. As I became a teen I also developed, the issues around my body image and calories (diet culture). The way I combat this is I just do exercise when I feel I really need to or want to in the comfort of my home rather then following a strict routine.

Straps fall off if the back design is inadequate. The back of overalls should come nearly between the shoulder blades, where the straps may start. This seems to be a more suspender-type. Causing lots of trouble. So it isn't your character, it is a design flaw!

This was such a relatable video Lucy, everything resonated with me! I have been building a new relationship with movement and exercise in the form of running (I can thoroughly recommend couch to 5k) and I’ve been loving the mental impact of it all. Thank you for addressing this so respectfully. I noticed an Apple Watch - sorry to ask for another review but how do you find that it works with your movement experience. I would love to track my runs and see my progress but worried about it becoming addictive and having triggers surrounding calories and targets ect! If you could share any insight that would be great as I’ve wanted one for a while!🥰🥰

Ahh that's so great to hear! I did couch to 5k a long time ago and it works in magical ways! I was a bit worried about the watch too so totally know where you're coming from. I've actually found it okay and actually quite like the targets because they're super realistic for an average day. But you can turn off the function that keeps an eye on your movement and just use separate apps for your running etc, so that might be the way to go :)

I do think you need the shoes. Kinda pants they’re so expensive I know, but maybe see if you can add them on with Lucy’s referral code? You can get toe cages to strap your feet in but haven’t tried them myself, and don’t know if they’re actually that much cheaper. I’ve heard people use Nike Superrep cycling shoes but you need to buy the delta clips to attach to them from Peolton or amazon.

Hey! I definitely do recommend the bike shoes, I think a lot of people say they're a fairly narrow fit but they've been absolutely fine for us. There must be cheaper alternatives out there though I would imagine. If you're using normal trainers you'll need some cages for the pedals :) or, as missvictoria mentioned above, you can try other cycling shoes with the delta clips which will attach to the peloton bike x

On movement clothes; - super markets have a really wide range of clothes, esp bras! They tend to be somewhere between £10 - £20 depending on what you're after but they last ages! - primark leggings are not to be sniffed at, they're hella good and functional - I treated myself to new sports kit as a reward for being able to run 10 mins on the treadmill and I went to Next and picked out 2 pairs of leggings - DO NOT GO TO FABLETICS THEY WILL SCAM YOU (think amazon prime but £50!!!) - depending what you're up to, I recommend having a decent pair of shoes for your movement of choice. (If you're a size 5 UK you might be able to get away with something in the kids section) always buy on sale - trainers are so expensive??????

I was a teen in the nighties through the ‘heroin chic’ days then in my 20’s in early noughties where shows like the biggest loser made think you’re only properly exercising if you throw up or pass out!! Magazines did the circle of shame around unacceptable body types! I look at my Gran who’s in her 90’s and still very physically and mentally fit, she used to dance twice as week as she loved it, that was her exercise! So why do we now have to punish ourselves to get fit?!! I’ve toyed with the idea of getting a Peloton and I’m toying harder now 😂
