Fairly in depth review about having the Leica MP in my bag for one whole year.
I answer some questions and share a few sample images from using the camera professionally in weddings and also in my personal work.
My particular version is the Leica MP 0.72 Silver. I've used a variety of lens including the 50mm summilux, 24mm summilux, 21mm artisan & 75mm voigtlander. I touch on how the camera has held up physically and what I've enjoyed most about using it.
These thoughts and comments are my own, I am not sponsored by Leica.
To see more of my wedding work please visit www.teribphotography.com
I have limited series collections of some of my fine art work, viewing available by request.
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and support my videos here!

couple of tips to prolong its shutter life: dont advance and leave cocked more than an hour or so. When advancing dont let the lever spring back and hit to body but gently guide it back with you thumb. The first tip prevents the springs from losing tension and your shutter malfunctioning, the second one prevents dents on the body but also prevents your frame spacing to move, the rebound from letting the lever hit often causes frame spacing issues over time in my experience as the cams for spaying are simply tensioned down and not necessarily fixed to a certain position. I love your photos btw!

So excited for another video! Great thoughts, and excited to see more work in the coming year. Also, I remember seeing a while ago a little hot shoe covers that that you can get with film stocks on them. I believe it was on Etsy, but it might be a helpful addition.

You're so nice for the encouragement - I did check out some hot shoe covers on ebay after reading this - great idea! I'll consider it for sure. Using the camera this week I did feel slightly silly, knowing that the dial does clue you in - I just use a variety of film stocks [cinestill & kodak] so it's tough to keep them straight!

Kudos on knowing to read-light and being able to shoot manually-- I see so many people on RU-vid taking forever to pull out the sekonic or pentax spot meter and meter a shot that's basically identical to a shot they just took, there's really only 11 stops of light from dark to a bright sunny day, so I really think people overthink it sometimes with exposure

Ah, thanks so much for taking the time to check this out and for making this great point. I understand the need to get the exposure right but must it be perfectly dialed in and calculated to a tee? For me, life is too short!! lol I will remember this tidbit when I get crap for it in the future so thanks Zach!

I owned a Leica M3 Double Stroke back in the mid 80s for a short time. I sold it to help subsidize my first book project and never returned to Leica. However, I have received acquired some very nice Canon VT Deluxe rangefinders with canon and Voightlander LTM lenses to downsize my film photography. As a result I've been viewing Leica videos like yours to get reacquainted with rangefinder photography. I congratulate you on your Leica MP purchase. If I were in the market for Leica it would be my choice as well. Very elegant and solid analog shooter.📷🏆👍

Teri! You are my hero! I shared with you that I've recently discovered a great love and passion for 35mm film. I have aL eitz Barnack iiif and an M3. Both are sporting 50mm lenses. And both are Mint. But I recently added the Leica M7 specifically because of the Light Meter. And I want you to know right now that I bought extra batteries. :) I was intimidated for a loooonnnnnngggg time about using an eternal LM. I've gotten more comfortable and daring with my non-LM bodies over time and shoot them every once in a while. But that's only because I just bought into the Leica R system. I've now added the R6.2, the R9 bodies, along with the R 90 f2 APO and R 24 f2.8 Elmarit to my kit. Portra 400. Kodak Gold 200. Ektar 100. Kodak Tri X 400. Fujifilm Acros 100 II, and Ilford HP5. You really have quite the setup with the Rs, wow! Portra 400 is really hard to top, I need more convincing with Ektar 100. HP5 is wonderful. Excited to keep going and working at the film stuff - it is the most rewarding!

Such a great camera and a really joyous review that gets to the heart of the MP - for me, it just feels the perfect creative tool. Love it! As for the lack of a film label frame (do these even have a name?), I tear off a bit from the film box and wedge it in the hotshoe mount - normally the ISO bit or the main box colour does the job.

I loved my MPs. There is a noticeable difference in the mechanical pieces, such as the film advance and that wonderful gear train noise that the shutter mechanism emits. Apart from the question of the ages (“What do I do with the bottom plate while loading film?”), I found loading film was pretty faultless as long as you pull enough of the leader into the take-up spool, check to be sure the film is aligned with the gears (I don’t follow the instructions that suggest just letting the bottom plate push the film down.), and check the tension on and movement of the rewind knob. Your sample images are wonderful. The shot of the airplane in the diffused light of the hangar really struck me, almost like a dream.
@teribphotography
@teribphotography 3 месяца назад
Such a nice way with words and I so appreciate you taking the time to watch and share some nice insights. Yes, you couldn't be more right about how the heck do I hold this bottom plate?! I still have many issues loading, especially if the film is heavy [slide e10, provia] or lighter [hp5] but at least can breathe and fix it in a moment when I need to be quick. I really like the airplane hanger shot too - its from the Tillamook air museum in Oregon, strange place but worth seeing once.
@bsmukler
@bsmukler 3 месяца назад
Thanks Teri. After fumbling a bottom plate and dropping it on the pavement one time, I generally defaulted to either placing it in a shirt pocket (risking introducing lint) or, the old standby, holding it between my lips 😊 I will add the Tillamook air museum to my list. That light, the hangar, and the plane push all my buttons. (I’m a mechanical nut, mostly concerning motorcycles these days, and looking forward to a long journey this summer, including riding to Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories this summer). I really respect your incorporation of both analog and digital M cameras in your work, which shows you enjoy the experience in addition to striving for great work product.

I have an M4, had an M6 before. I find if you slightly bend/fold the start of the film roll before you slot it into the 3 prongs of the film advance (if that’s even the right way of describing it lol) it catches a heck of a lot easier. Putting the baseplate on before you advance to frame one helps too. 🍻

i tend to still keep the baseplate open so i can see that it is actually advances - scarred from previous mistakes, ill get there! great tip about slightly bending/folding the film - i will try!!

The sound is ok, there is a bit of room reverb that adds some echoing to your voice - some wall decoration might do the trick. If you don‘t use the light meter on your MP, you can use the ISO dial as a film stock reminder (or a bit of tape on the bottom plate and a sharpie to note the film stock used - that‘s what I did to pick the right camera for a job). You could choose a M4 instead, that has a dial on the back to select film type and ISO :). With your 24mm lens - do you use an external finder or rely on experience to get a proper framing? (I personally find the fast (Summilux) wide angle lenses from Leica - 28 and below - too heavy and bulky for use with my M cameras). Good to see you back - I like your style sharing thoughts with the community which is much different from the typical influencer attitude.
@teribphotography

Got it! In the process of packing at this place and it’s a very old building. Thanks for the note on sound. This is a great tip on the iso reminder on the back - I do regularly use this at least! Gets tricky when I’m trying different film stocks though!! I’m not sure I’ve even seen an M4 - I’ve been getting reacquainted with the 24mm and I’ll have to get back to you, especially when I’ll be using it more for weddings this season. Enjoyed your thoughts on the MP. Using it indoors without a meter is impressive! A few questions: Because the MP and M11 shutter speed dials turn in opposite directions (to either increase or decrease it), do you find it confusing at times to swap between cameras during the same shoot? What flash do you use with the camera? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Congratulations on the M-P. I picked up an M6 TTL last year and haven’t used it much. When I do, I don’t yet feel comfortable loading film in it. That process felt easier with my dearly departed OM-1 and Nikons. Which Summilux-M do you have? I have the 28, 35 FLE I, and the new 50 II. I love them all. I have both the Leica Noctilux-M 75 mm f/1.25 and Voigtländer Nokton 75 mm f/1.5. I love the Leica version, especially on my SL2. However, the Voigtländer, while it only gives up a fraction of a stop, is impressive (and much lighter + smaller).

So glad you took time to watch and to hear that your enjoying your leica things! Pretty sure the M6 TTL was what I also considered. Loading film really has been challenging. I now feel much more comfortable but I’ve likely done closer to 75 rolls through it. I have the summi 50mm & 24mm :) Agreed. I’ve been really happy with the 75mm voigtlander, it’s been a great focal length when I’m regularly using my 50mm alongside it!
@johnkasianowicz6536
@johnkasianowicz6536 3 месяца назад
@@teribphotography The pre-owned M6-TTL was an impulse buy. I was thinking of getting a much more vintage M, but the one I got looked too cool to pass up (it has a lovely grey leatherette). It has the 0.85x viewfinder, which helps a great deal. What do you think of the Summilux-M 24? I picked up a used Elmar-M 24 mm f/3.8. It’s pretty sharp and a cool focal length. I just got a +2.0 diopter lens for my M11 viewfinder. It allows me to see all the available frame lines now (couldn’t with my glasses on). I’m tempted to get one for my M11 Monochrom. The Voigtländer Nokton 75 is one heck of the lens at an unbeatable price. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of great images with it. I guess I disagree! Meter in camera body, a super convenience! Any M2,M4 M4-2, M4-P would work equally well. Save major money! I use M3, that I've used for 57 years! I prefer 50mm. Using film in a wedding, bad idea! Using Film with digital, a lot smarter. My opinion! Bravo!

Totally fine Jason, appreciate you taking the time to share - in the past I found that the light meter often pushed me to 5.6 and i didn't love the photos, it's a big reason why I tend to disregard it. I love using film for weddings, it is such a unique way to storytell - I'm always using my digital too of course :) Thank you again!

Even if you didn't like the Leica, you wouldn't regret it anyway, it's a Leica.😂 I don't know how easy it is to find batteries for the Leica M-P in your country, but there's always the option of getting one of those old-school hot shoe external light meters.🙃

Hahaha great advice and so true - leica is one of a kind, for better or pocketbook worse! i feel like if i've gone this long maybe i'll never get a proper battery lol

You voice comes in loud and clear. He might be referring to what sounds like a fridge buzzing in the background? And bit of echo maybe.

? okay! I'm a little confused! I had one MP for a few weeks and there was a shutter issue, the light meter worked in that one. The last year I haven't used the light meter, it's never had a battery. Oh darn if that's your deal breaker!

She just has to remove the battery, and it becomes an M-A. No need to burn a second hole in the wallet. The MP is the ultimate camera~~
@hellatightdude
@hellatightdude 20 дней назад
@@SolidStrike it still has the battery bump, and the viewfinder isn’t as clear as the M-A. If you’re gonna shoot a new silver chrome Leica and you don’t use your light meter, M-A is the way to go/
