@@GuidoVanDeWater I've been shooting the Lumix G9 for just over a year now. Coming to it through the Leica V-Lux 114 (Lumix FZ1000) after turning in most of my full-frame Nikon gear upon retiring from my newspaper in Pensacola, Florida. I have the Panasonic/Leica 100-400mm and 8-18 lenses for bird photography and a small amount of interior photography. I think the G9 software upgrades have made that camera far more capable than many people believe but I was glad to see the new OM-1 has proven that MFT is not dead and is a real contender for photographers who want the results but not the bulk as proven by yourself and photographers like Daniel J. Cox.

A nice yearly review of pictures and experiences! While I cannot comment all the pictures I thought that I would comment some particularly those that I might have missed or not seen in previous videos: hope this is ok.... 05:15 Depth. Light. Feels like I am there with the photographer. 05:55 Very nice indeed with layers. The bright vivid colors in the foreground and then the transition to the more muted in the background. 08:45 I struggle to capture insects and birds in good compositions and settings. I would be proud having this one in my portfolio. Also later in the video you have a section devoted to birds and birds in flight but I feel I cannot comment being a novice in this area. 08:55 Excellent! Rather different from most of the previous pictures: dark. The contrast between the leaves and the yellow brown (?pine needles?) and the rest if really appealing to me. 09:15 Just lovely. 09:25 So much atmosphere.... 12:05 dock boats with sunset/rise. Like with 05:15 I feel like I am standing there while you are taking the shot. 13:05 Wow! really like this one, a powerful image. 20:25 my favorite among your bird photos 21:35 such detail! 25:22 Very nice, really like it. Best regards, Joe

@@ianmcmichael8799 I think it will be perfect for you. I think the best thing about the micro four third system is that because of the size and weight you can take all lenses with you and decide later what you want to shoot. There is never a compromise for me. Ireland wow that must be great for landscape photography. I've been wanting to go there for years but somehow It hasn't happend yet. I'm also a fan of u2 so maybe that's where the Irish interest comes from 😅 hope you will like the other videos. There's not star photography in them since the netherlands is the most dense populated country in Europe there is never a place without surrounding lights interfering. Some great images there Guido, I love my OM-1 but i did have some trouble with it after 6 mths of use, the lcd screen packed it in and just before that happened i got a shock off it when unplugging it from the wall socket ! Apart from that it has been magical to use specially for birds. I also do a lot of Macro and again its the perfect camera for that style of photography, look how many are changing to the system for Macro and Birds, the lens are so sharp that you don't need sharpening afterwards. I have shots indoor school plays and from a distance with the 40-150 F2.8 and the shots are fantastic ! If the rumors are true a firmware update to give us star tracking will be a game changer ! Cheers from a very wet and cold New Zealand, so off to Australia October for three weeks with the Two Mad Photographer's, well four days with them at OReillys and the rest of the time touring on our own !

Would not like being electrocuted by my camera. But I don't hear many complains technically and especialy with usage and image quality. The om-1 already has starry sky af but I think younrefer to something else? I'm don't photograph stars at all. Living in one of the dense populated county's in the world there is no possibility for star photography here. I realy have to travel for hours to find a spot that is dark enough. You've put up a beautiful portfolio - especially your macro work! I appreciate your video and opinions, but I have to say I did a direct comparison between the OM-1 and my E-M1.3 in the store (on a tripod, so same shots with both cameras) at several moderate to high ISO settings and I have to say I really don't see a difference between the two sensors with respect to noise... maybe an ever so slight improvement in the shadows on the OM-1. I did not perform a dynamic range test. At any rate, these days software can do wonders to mitigate image noise, so I didn't get the OM-1. And as I have four E-M1 bodies that all use the same battery it annoys me that OM created yet another battery for the OM-1, and on top of that they don't include the battery charger with the camera! So, maybe I'll try one OM-1 at some point just because I could use the better video capabilities, but I don't see replacing all four bodies any time soon. Also, my advice to you is add some gain to your mic signal, and to reduce the volume of the background music that plays through your photos. Try to get the two levels to be the same. Cheers
@GuidoVanDeWater
@GuidoVanDeWater 9 месяцев назад
Hi Tom, thanks for watching the video and your kind words. I have an em1x that was my main stills camera before the om-1 and I also had my doubts when they came with a other 20mp sensor. The em1mk3 that you own Is basically an em1x in a smaller body so it is a great camera. The noise is a little less on the om-1 but the biggest benefit for me is the dynamic range. Shooting landscapes in mostly low light conditions I realy noticed a huge difference in dynamic range. Its much easier to pull up the blacks compared to my em1x. Also the high res and live nd capability are amazing. When shooting in these modes noise almost dissapears completely. But I think the most important thing is that you are still satisfied with your current camera. I always say that there is no need to spend lots of money if you are satisfied with what you have. Who knows you can skip a model of buy one cheaper second hand. I do get what you mean with the battery's. I think the main reason is that the batteries are a lot more powerful and last longer. I actualy don't mind that there is no separate charger. There is a charger but it is to charge the batteries within camera. And this is the truth I have never chamhed one battery on location! I have never used all the power (2 batteries I use the grip) so I just plug in the cable and it charges again. But within landscapes you don't use much power. I guess it gets a bit different when shooting birds. But with my em1x I easily went trough 4 batteries on 1 day. Thanks for the tip on de microphone. I had to look up what the purpose is of your advice but I get it and sounds logical. I'm not sure I can change these settings on my dji osmo that I use for the vlogs. It's a small wireless transmitter that comes with the osmo but I'm deffinitly gonna look in to that. Anyways thanks again for your comment I realy apreciate it. Grt guido

Thanks for watching the video. Happy to hear you liked it. I actualy don't know if there are many landscape videos out there using the om-1. But there are a lot of bird and wildlife users that is for sure. And it is a brilliant camera for landscapes but I actualy think that there are no bad cameras anymore these days. All my videos use the om-1 for landscapes so plenty of examples. Videos from before July 2022 use the em1x also very capable but a bit heavier and bigger camera. A good thing to share is that I have never come across a situation were the camera could not do the job properly. In my latest video there is some good examples of the om-1 high res mode and the live nd filter mode. Might be interesting to watch aswel. I'm on the edge of buying this camera and would be grateful if you could say something about the lenses you used for both your landscape and bird photos. Hello Gerry, thanks for watching the video. Happy to hear that you found it helpful. Most of my landscape shots are done with the 12-40 f2.8 pro, 40-150 f2.8 Pro or the 100-400 f5-6.3 is. Most of the bird shots in that video are done with the 40-150 f2.8 pro or the 300mm f4 ( i don't own that lens but borrowed it for a trip. If you do lot sof bird then I think that lens is amazing. And the 150-400 is also amazing but at almost 8000 euro that is a different price range. I don't miss the dept of field myself and I think that the difference is much less then everyone think it is. The lenses that om system makes are amazing and I think you can adapt to that difference. For landscapes it's even an advantage because usualy you want as much sharp as possible in the frame. I always like the 40-150 f2.8 pro a lot but the focal range might be a bit tight for birds. So maybe adding a 100-400, 300 r 150-600 for birds might be a good idea then. But that comes with a whole different price tag. The biggest question is how serious you want to do photography. Maybe I do not need the extra feautures of the OM1 as extended nd filter or extended focus stacking but I wonder if longer lenses fit also well with the OM5 due to its smaller size. There are 2 videos on my channel where I tested the 90mm Pro macro maybe interesting for you also. Indo know a lot of macro photographer changed to the om-1 might be because of the focus stacking capability. If you want to shoot landscapes the honest answer is that the sensor in the om-1 is a bit better in low light conditions. I think om system has recently launched a test and wow in Spain. If you want to try wich one suits you best they send you a camera for a view days so you can try it. What do you think of the hdr1 and hdr2 compared to bracketed shots? IMO the camera does too much noise reduction.
@GuidoVanDeWater
@GuidoVanDeWater 5 месяцев назад
I think think the hdr-1 and hdr-1 work perfectly. I sometimes use it deliberately because of that in my opinion excellent noise reduction. If I want to shoot a scene a bit on the darker side then I know noise appears so I use the hdr. When there is no wind and the scene looks realy promissing I always shoot hdr scenes. For me the moment when I start to bracket is when I can't get the dynamic range ge into one shot. That's when I make brackets but with brackets you loose the bigger files compared to the hdr in body. So recently I did a couple of brackets with in nobody hdr shots. Insane results and extremely large files 😅 you do need a very fast computer because processing them takes the maximum amount of memory 🤣 but I can't say that I use one or the other more often. Depend on the scene and on my mood 🙂 grt guido

@@GuidoVanDeWater Thank you! That made it really clear. 😀Answering your question I am from Poland and I expect there are some polish abasadors. I mean.. I am pretty sure I watched some polish videos with polish OM ambasadors (or even he was an actuall technical worker for OM), but honestly world of photography is so wide, that it is really hard to know EVERY name of a photographer even from your own country.. (it's not a Football World Cup to know who's Messi or who is Memphis Depay.. 😂) And to gear, If I could go for the system, that would be exactly OM system or any Fullframe brand. I actually started this year with Sony A6400 and 200-600 mm. If I had to say "Am I happy with it?" I'd answer that I am not unhappy, but I would not like to stay with it for a longer period. That's a good gear, but in certain situations... You better have fullframe or MFT. For example in wildlife, APS-C can handle worse some situations than you would do with MFT or Fullframe, because on higher ISO you lose a colours and details (let's say 12,800 ISO is good for todays denoise programs but you still lose information) and you could handle the same ISO with noise as it would be iso 6400 on fullframe or like 4000-6400 ISO on MFT (because of compensation with lower shutter speed ability like 1/40 + good stabilization and good light with like 300 mm F4 pro - of course with 1/60 I am not talking about fast moving subject just about ISO handle). To get faster aperture you need to pay x3 in Sony lenses, and to shoot 1/60 with any Sony lens? Good luck to have one good photo at that range... 😂 So back to the beggining, it's really an honour to be just an ambasador - moneys aside. That's an achivement a lot of people would like to have! I am going to switch my gear next year. And we will see which way, because seems like I am going to monetize my work seriously, so as a future portrait photographer it's going to be a fullframe, or OM1. If I ever had OM1 all I need are 4 lenses: 17 f1.2 pro, 45 f1.2 pro, 300 mm f4 pro and 60 mm f2.8 macro. Fullframe is a little wide in brand so it needs to be carefully chosen not sure about which certain lens would be on my way yet.

@GuidoVanDeWater 11 месяцев назад

I'm thinking of jumping ship from Sony, the OM1 is top of my wish list - Is there a particular lens to pair it with that works best for landscape? There seems to be a few that cover 12-xx mm (24mm FF upwards) but going to 40mm or 100mm and so on. I need something better than 'kit' lens status
@morten1389
@morten1389 Год назад
I have only seen the OM-1 being offered alone, or in a kit with the 12-40mm f2.8 Pro II lens, which is an absolutely stellar lens, as it is in their Pro-grade of lenses.

Thabks for watching the video. Im sure you will love the om-1 if you decide to jump into it I use the 12-40 f2.8 Pro and the 40-150 f2.8 Pro for 80 percent of my landscape images. If you want to go wider I can recommend the 8-24 f4 Pro and if you want a one lens option the 12-100 f4 Pro is also a very capable lens. Shooting landscape usualy means we rarely come beneath f4. If your into start photography then the 2.8 will be a better choice. Hope I helped you out a little if you have any more questions please feel free to contact me at any time. Grt guido

I have the 100-400 f5 - f6.3 it is a great lens for the amount of wildlife that I photograph. You can also look for the 300 f4 Pro prime but that is almost double the money of the 100-400. You also look for a 40-150 with a 2x teleconverter you loose a little bit of sharpnes at the long end but then you have and excellent zoom for a bit closer and the ability to reach those distant subjects if needed. @@parmanduke I thought I'd chime in as I've had a bit of a similar experience. I tried out the X-H2s at the same time as the OM-1. I ended up keeping the OM-1. It is slightly lower resolution, but the IQ is so high, especially with the pro lenses, and there's just something about the jpegs out of the camera that are special. I suppose it's like how some people love the Fuji looks. Olympus definitely has its own look. Granted, I really liked the images out of the Fuji. It was a difficult decision to be sure. In the end, I opted for the OM-1 as I already had a Panasonic and some M43 lenses. So it made sense for me. These stacked sensor cameras really are another level. I'm surprised people don't give them more credit. They cost a lot, but compared to their full frame equivalents they're relatively reasonable.

But i often crop a normal image to a 3x2, 16x9 or 1x1 and sti) there is plenty of pixels left to make large prints. The OM is bigger, heavier and a little bit faster in processing, but thats all. I think the new iteration is a great disappointment. My EM1 mk3 will do absolutely fine for me until we see some real innovation from OM, not just a rebranding exercise.

@@GuidoVanDeWater Look, your images are fantastic so there is no doubting your dedication and your skills, but as you know its usually about the guy behind the camera rather than the camera itself. I would be the first to admit that the new OM is better in many ways, but is it really that much about an incremental improvement. Some would say that modern cameras have actually become too clinical and the magic of the image is being lost. I have just got back from Cambodia and I shot with my OMD EM5 mk2 which uses my M.Zuiko primes and and my OMD EM1 uses my 40-150 f2.8 and both with the 16mp sensors. So long as you shoot in RAW and know how to post process you can deliver the image. Its never about absolute quality its more about the experience and your own personal ability. I also have a Sony A7R3 with the 45mp sensor which I use only for portrait work and the images are so much cleaner and more punchy than any m4/3 camera, but I still have beautiful portraits taken with the 16mp sensor which on liners still comment on today. And when I compare the 16mp to the 20mp, yea there is something there but not actually that much. What I am alluding to, its not about the camera, although a good lens is always a good thing to have, its about you, your own journey and your own enjoyment, at the end of the day no one really give a stuff about your pictures anyway. You are not an artist. The only true artists start with a blank piece of paper or a solid block of rock, now those guys you can truly admire.
