This is Onew (pronounced Oh-new) from SHINee!! He's an extremely talented vocalist with a wide ranged and a very distinct honey tone. This video tells the story of people who hold 'dice' meaning that they can change their own fate, whereas the people without dice just go through the motions of life doing what's expected of them. There are a ton of easter eggs for the SHINee World (Shawol) fandom too, which makes it even more fun. I sometimes wish the Patreon requester would give them a bit of context, like if a solo artist is also a member of a group. ONEW is a member of SHINee as well as TAEMIN ....KEY and MINHO are having solos as well.
How I interpret the story in Onew's "Dice" MV and song is that every time Onew -- pronounced Oh-New in English or On-New in with a Korean accent -- rolled the dice his fate changed. That is why you saw him changing his look every time he tossed the dice. Throughout the MV, Onew tosses the dice thinking he needs to change his fate in order to find the girl and rescue her. However, in the end, when she steps out of the elevator, you see she also has a dice, which means she also is in control of her own fate. We discover she rolled the dice in order to defeat the monsters and to allow her to meet Onew. I interpret the song and MV to be about taking control of your own fate, and if you don't like the circumstances you are in at the moment, just roll the dice and change things. You don't have to continue to be stuck in the situation you are in if you actively work to change it. At one point you see a monster with a smashed dice in his hand, which I think is supposed to symbolize how the monsters, or bad things in your life, don't have control of your fate. If you don't give those bad people and things control of your life, you will always have a say in how your dice is rolled and where your fate takes you. "Dice" is the title track on Onew's second solo Korean album. You should also check out his pre-release song called "Way" featuring Punch, from this album, which has an official animate lyric video and a special live performance video, that came out at the end of 2021. Plus, for something with a completely different vibe, check out his MV for his song "Blue," from his solo debut Korean album Voice, which was released in 2018. Onew is known as one of the premier voices in Kpop. He is one of the most coveted male vocalists in the industry that all singers dream of getting the chance to sing with. He has such impressive vocal talent and understanding of how to use his voice that he can sing almost any style or genre of song. Wait until you hear Onew perform "Dice" live. Onew is the leader of SHINee, and as a group, SHINee is nicknamed CDNee or CD-eaters because all the members sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. Onew brought live performances back to music shows with this comeback -- why waste his time recording a backing track when he has no problem singing live and he will sound even better live than the recording. SHINee's live vocals are unmatched and everyone in the industry idolizes them for the amount of talent they have. Even as rookies they were highly respected by their seniors and peers for their live vocal abilities. The ONLY thing the SHINee members are not good at is lip syncing, therefore, they avoid it at all costs. That is why, when you hear the members of SHINee sing, 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their whole career to build endurance and stamina in order to be able to sing live for hours and continue to sound flawless, while performing extremely complex choreography the whole time. SHINee live is on a whole other level. It's literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard all other groups and artists strive to reach. Which is why they are so highly respected. All of the SHINee members' voices are very dynamic. SHINee are one of the top groups that are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They are a group of 5 amazing vocalists, 5 impressive dancers, 5 visuals, 5 rappers, 5 top actors, and 5 of the most talented and unique voices in all of Kpop. That is why they are "The Princes of Kpop". Also, because Onew is a member of SHINee, none of his songs will ever be like anything you have every heard or seen before. As SM Entertainment's experimental boy group, SHINee is meant to be the first and they are expected to set the trend, and that includes the members' solo work. With every new song SHINee produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from Onew in any of his songs, even on the same album, and yet, it still will always have that signature Onew feel. They have now released Onew's dance practice video for "Dice". And in true SHINee style, it is fire. You should check it out. :D
This is SHINee Onew's (On-you or On-new) title track for his new solo album. He is the leader of SHINee, the glue of SHINee, and a real sweetheart (remember their live performance of "Sherlock" that you loved so much). This is such a fun video and a new side of Onew that I REALLY like, and I adore this new sound from him. I also found it cute that Onew kept the SHINee album title trend alive that was created with Taemin's first solo album, "Ace" and then Jonghyun saying he "plagiarized" Taemin's album title by rhyming his first album title using "Base". Then Key jumped on the bandwagon with "Face" and Onew with "Voice" and now "Dice". As another reactor pointed out, Onew and the girl are the only humans in the video. They others are robots. This is significant as it could mean that Onew and the girl are really ALIVE; INDEPENDENT -- thinking for themselves and not just following the trends, what they're told, or HIDING BEHIND MASKS. Also, from what I can understand, each roll of the dice can change the outcome of a given situation; in other words, they are not afraid of change. At first, it appears that only Onew has a die. When a die appears in the robot-like character's hand, it seems to be short-circuiting because its hand is vibrating in a slightly chaotic fashion. However, if you look at the girl's hand (right one looking at the screen) during the elevator scene when it first opens, we see that the female protagonist also has a die, so she can also change outcomes. This MV also seems somewhat connected to SHINee's "Married to the Music" MV as it share's many similarities. If you're at all familiar with SHINee, you can instantly recognize the SHINeeisms throughout the MV. Here are a few things that struck me after watching this for the umpteenth time: 1) The "bellhop" robots in the beginning, as well as the robots in the dining and party scene have dull, sick-colored green masks/faces. The backup dancers have the more SHINee-colored masks, making them more friendly looking towards Onew. 2) Are the robots experimenting on "sour" lemons and trying to make them into blue-green lemonade (called pearl-aqua -- SHINee's signature fandom color) that all the robots drink in order to change them into cheap imitations of SHAWOLs (SHINee fans)? OR are they turning sour lemons -- "fake/anti fans" or "saesangs" -- into real SHAWOLs through the music? In any case, the aqua lemonade color isn't quite right, but bears a striking resemblance to SHINee's drink in "Married to the Music" that changes Taemin's skin color. 3)If you look at the slime on the walls there are two different shades of aqua. The brighter blue color is the signature color for the SHINee fandom, while the other color has more of a green tint and seems duller -- jealousy perhaps? 4) The overall bold coloration of the set and fashion is reminiscent of Jonghyun's "She is" and "Shinin" and SHINee's "Atlantis". 5) The party scene with bright fashion, presence of fruit -- especially lemons -- are all reminiscent of SHINee's "Married to the Music". Remember Key's decapitation scene where the severed portion of Key's neck looked like a lemon slice, eyes being knocked out, etc., . 6) The nod to Taemin's chainsaw fetish in "Criminal". 7) The entire "world" Onew is in reminds us of a planet Key would discover within his "Bad Love" space explorations! 8) Although I'm still searching for any tidbits from Minho's "Heartbreak", one SHAWOL suggested the golfing scene may be a nod to Minho who loves golfing. If the golfer does represent Minho, you can see he's surrounded by the correct pearl-aqua color (protection of SHAWOLs) on the walls while a few of the greener blobs cling to it.
