This tutorial format of showing the experience of real riders is awesome. Sometimes other "pro-level" rider videos will show how to do something like this and just make it look way too easy without showing the nitty gritty process of what it takes to get there. Props to these riders for being willing to be on camera too. Love it!
This is….so far the best one wheel operating video I’ve seen in a year. Not just bonking, but foot placement, obstacle negotiation. Thanks and best of luck to your channel.
Awesome idea to hold a clinic to use for the video, seeing clear video examples of the things you might be doing wrong through the examples of the students works really well. Props as well on stressing a lot of the points and details that other tutorials seem to overlook. Seen too many people put all their focus on just jamming their nose down and not thinking about the actual approach (knees bent, slightly heavier on the rear foot to ease on the brake, and deweighting off your front foot). Well done man 👏
Ah! It seems the link is not there on mobile for some reason. On desktop, there’s a “Join” button at the top of the description, next to my name and the Subscribe button
you rock Jake. Learning with Leary was always some of my favorite videos. You really are the professor my dude. So i have had a onewheel over a year trail ride and all sorts of things but when it comes to bonks and nudges and stuff....i havent tried enough but this gave me some things i think i can work on to build confidence for them. thank you so much. might take you up on those lessons. we will see.
Haha thanks. Basically have to reach pushback speed or there’s no chance. Also, you gotta learn on a 2 stair, there’s some good 2s to learn on on battery park and at black hubba, also one in wburg near the BQE
@@JakeLeary Nice, thanks for the response! I come from skateboarding and got an XR a few months ago. I can get a good maybe 4-5 inches of air right now and am trying to step things up. I think my technique is most of the way there and I mostly need to 1) get comfortable bonking while going faster like you said, and 2) build up the right leg muscles just through practice - when I was at peak ollie height years ago I had a comically huge calf muscle just on my rear leg. Anyway, not sure if you're in NYC anymore but if you ever do another trick clinic in the area I'd be there! Really appreciate all your contributions.
thanx jake! im a bonkers type rider and i try to tell people its not like nudges but uses all the same pieces in a different way i think of it as making a rainbow of momentum you make with your feet and it starts where the tire meets the bonk
Great video, thank you for creating it. The only thing I wish is that someone more my size (225lbs) would create videos showing how to bonk and do over tricks. I've tried to do some of the tricks I see, but being a bigger guy makes it different and harder to do. I'm working on losing the weight, but I could never be under 200lbs because of my size and build. Even at 200lbs, I believe it's still harder to do these tricks compared to some one that is say 150lbs.
Some of the energy comes from deforming the tire when it hits the obstacle, and if you weigh more, you can comfortably run higher pressures. If you focus less on jamming the nose down more on the shifting of your weight with relation to the board and deweight ("jumping" with enough force to be light on the board, but not to leave the board), anticipating how the obstacle will move the board in relation to your body and compensating the angle of approach etc to stay centered and level over the board in the air / on landing, you'll bonk. IMO there's a little too much emphasis on jamming on the nose when first learning -- that may be key to getting bigger bonks, but the fundamentals are way more about managing your center of gravity vs the other forces at play. This is my trail board which I have at full tight, nose up 2.5 to compensate for the W rails, and 7 aggressiveness. If I didn’t have Ws I just ride in mission for bonks
The feeling of my feet leaving the board and landing in a different position is terrifying, i commit to things pretty easily so it doesn’t stop me from trying but my feet sliding around on the grip tape is so unsettling
Awesome Video! But i can't get over the girl trying to meditate behind you LMAO. In her head: stay calm.. BONK!, stay relaxed BONK !!! Focus on your breathi...CRASH SKID ..BONK!
@@JakeLeary 👀 did something came out if this¿ i still hold the Supra Skytop II as the best designed sneakers of all time... them finger loops were something else
Practicing bonks yesterday and dislocated my left shoulder. Not because I fell.... But because I threw my arm so hard forward when I hit the obstacle it came right out of the socket....IDIOT!
I have zero clue about these kind of boards but I feel a strong 2 in piece of carbon fiber over the wheel connecting both front and rear sections would be very useful Like a wheel well but still having some tire exposed as I'm sure people will start manipulating the wheel with their foot as things progress But giving you a small areas where you could plant your foot over the wheel would open up some possibilities for doing certain tricks
Best not to come up too hard against the object, better to circle and bump up against it occasionally, until the time is right to hit it straight on..you'll know;)
