The lightning phenomenon that Chris describes is a natural yet rare behavior of lightning strikes, sometimes when the hit the ground, the electric current sprawls out like a web, conducting the flow through other objects on the ground. Like say if a tree to get struck, the people around the tree would be struck as well. This is extremely rare however.

you probably already got an answer to this but the grounded lightning phenomenon you described is called ball lightning, it requires super specific conditions to occur but its pretty damn cool.
