I just turned 35 today and I saw this when I was about 5 years old. The animation never left my mind. But more vividly than the animation, I remember the flute, the exact melody but never knew what it was called. Then when I heard the song in Kill Bill, I recognized it IMMEDIATELY and found the name of the song. But when I search the song, this animation never came up for some strange reason. But today on my birthday, I've found it.
So interesting how many people here, like me, have a strong mental and emotional memory of this animation. I somehow had it copied onto a VHS when i was little in the early 90's and the images have stuck in my head so brightly. I'm 29 and an animator now, I hope so much that something I create will have the same effect on people.
Saaaaaame. I remembered the animation and the song but could not find the short. I finally found it by searching "sultan in palace with birds short film".
Bravo National Film Board of Canada. This video brings back wonderful memories of my childhood growing up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. One of the benefits of growing up in a border community.
Been looking for this short film, Mahsi Cho (Thank you) for sharing. I remember watching this on CBC when I was a young girl. I always wished someone would have watched it with me. The graphics and colours stood out and had captured my imagination. Mahsi Cho!
This animation is the perfect companion to the Persian poem "The Conference of the Birds" by Farid Ud-Din Attar, the Persian mystic-poet of the twelfth century. The Conference of the Birds is a Sufi Poem -its subject matter the mysticism of Islam. Attar uses allegory (the birds) on a fantastic quest in search of the divine and achieving the ultimate oneness with God.
I loved this short when I was a little girl. I just Re-discovered the song "the lonely shepard" today and I was flooded with the images I remembered as a young girl. Love the message. Be grateful for who you are. Thank you for posting this to youtube.
