Hey everybody. It's been a while, and I've been dealing with a lot, but I managed to pull it all together and bring you the long-awaited Onimusha 2 Retrospective! Just ignore how depression-coded I was in this video, I wanted to make sure I got it done lol. I hope the wait wasn't too excruciating, but I'll be bringing more soon.
For now, enjoy! It's one of my longest videos yet!

On the gift giving system, it depends on the timing for some gifts to get a better reaction from said character. If you're paying attention, you can tell when the relationship is at its highest when they do an extra animation when trading. They don't tell you that you can't please all the characters at once. Only two per playthrough.
@OneSleepyGiant
@OneSleepyGiant 2 месяца назад
To be fair, they don't tell you anything except "you can give gifts." But I never knew these details either, so thanks for telling me 👌🏼

I might be misremembering this but i think that most of the gifts are randomized each run except some specific ones that adhere to a characters traits(like alcohol for Eikei) so really there is no way to figure this out other than trial and error. But despite the flaws this is still one of my all time favorite Ps2 games.

@@OneSleepyGiant Bruh, I seriously thought he was just a sexist woman with tiddy hanging out because I thought tiddy out=strong. And since some of the stronger demons like Big Ol' Giggums was big and wore no shirt, I just accepted it like it was nothing. And then I did research. Gogan was just that kind of special™️. ...There's a lot to answer for with him, like why Mama Jubei's flute weakens him. I'd have thought he may have been a servant of the Yagyu family because of that. The game is a mess and I love it. 🤣

Yeah, as much as I adore this game, I can't deny that the story is a bit goofy and plot-holey. I do still stand by the idea that it is on pretty much the same peak as Onimusha 3. The story and characters may be a bit better in 3 (minus Henri), but the combat definitely feels the smoothest and most open to experimentation. On top of the regular attacks and magic, it introduced the charge attacks which Onimusha 3 adopted too, but the secret techniques for each weapon were a good extra layer that you can really smoothly transition to in the middle of a regular combo, or decide to use instead of a charged attack if you decide a faster attack is needed instead of a bigger, slower hit I do agree that the Golden Evil Statue does kinda come out of nowhere, especially since there's only one or two documents throughout the game that even mention it. It wasn't as jarring for me since I've always been a huge lore nut with this series, so even as a kid, I always read through every document and soaked in all of the history and lore, but for most people, yeah it's a bit out of nowhere. The gifting system does have a few context clues to gauge how much a character likes you and hints to what gifts may be best for them, but I do agree aswell that the game doesn't really give enough information, so it does feel a bit too much trial and error-ry (Is that a word?) One thing that you didn't mention in relation to the other characters is that there is only one that you can really prioritise and get all their scenes for. The others effectively get forced offscreen unless a scene involves them as well as the character that has priority. E.g: If you give enough gifts to make Ekei like you the most, most scenes involving Magoichi, Kotaro and Oyu will be locked out, even if they meet the minimum threshhold to trigger them. The only scenes that are not locked are the ones that involve you actually playing as those characters, though Oyu's is the only one that is mandatory regardless of who you prioritise. I do like that the gift system allows for replayability, but it certainly could have been done a bit more player-friendly Great video overall! Looking forward to your thoughts on the rest of the series! Much as I've ragged on some of the game's aspects, I do still think that Onimusha 2 ties with 3 as the series' highest point. Hell, I think the only Onimusha game I flatout don't like or enjoy is Onimusha Soul, but I think the less we talk about that game, the better.
@OneSleepyGiant

Thanks for the compliments and info! I mainly talked about the Golden Statue in a facetious way to play up the comedy, but like you, I read everything, but I do think they could've stood to have someone like Hideyoshi bring it up in a scene or something, since he was one of the more talkative villains. I also think, and I'll mention it when I talk about 3, how I think things like actually being able to stock the Oni Form are improvements to the formula, but I do agree it feels the most expansive here, just a shame you have to rely on things like the gift giving to try to get everything. And I didn't specify, but I think I meant to imply that you can't do everything in one go, when I mentioned this system makes the game so replayable. But that's on me for not being more clear. Also, I realized in post I forgot to mention Jubei's tux, especially because I talked about Samanosuke and Kaede's in 1. Something to remember to do lol. Again, thank you for checking me out, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I got a friend who's a huge Onimusha fan she skip this game when she was young all cause Samanosuke wasn't in it the greatest mistake of her life. Gets the game years later as she miss out on now her favorite videogame character Gogandantess who beat her so bad made her select Easy Mode by accident. I will always clown on her every time for skipping this game. Also the water at the beach on Dantess second fight is just magical.

your computer’s graphical strength has nothing to do with how Onimusha displays (not plays, just the graphical display). that was actually the emulator back then before the 1.7 overhaul just not being able to display the graphics correctly since pre-rendered and 3d elements were an uncommon graphic style on ps2 (and there were even enemy teleporting issues if you didn’t have the I/O settings correct). Back then before the pcsx2 1.7 GUI overhaul, you would have needed the PCSX2 custom Onimusha emulator which solved most issues with Onimusha games, but no longer do you require that (unless you want R1 ps2 button pressure sensitivity as it is, but that’s a whole different story) Emulation back then was mainly designer side issue since they had to bear the weight of reverse engineering these consoles which is some insane wizardry. On the user side, you were basically expected to look at their ‘compatibility’ section to see if something could run, and their wiki page to find out what ‘issues’ existed and if there were fixes via ‘emulator settings’ on the user side. I can’t recall if the wiki page mentioned the custom emulator but I remember wanting to play the game when I was putting my discs in my pc and trying all my ps2 games since you could play directly from the disc drive if you wanted. and since it looked weird and I noticed other graphical issues with Blade Warriors as well, I looked googled info on emulator onimusha and then came across the custom emulator. So…essentially that’s what you had to do in the user side. Pretty fun review though, and like all the plot hole point outs but I guess some amount of silliness needs that. I’m surprised the opinion is still that Onimusha 3 is considered the best. I remember that back in the day but saw a lot of hate for it more recently which had me wondering if people did a back flip or something. I don’t think it’s the best but I think it’s the most approachable difficulty-wise and with all the moves you were able to do (like 10-point slash), it really did lead into Dawn of Dreams which, japanese version is way better than the capcom hates rentals nerf version that we got (has the full english options).
@OneSleepyGiant
@OneSleepyGiant 2 месяца назад
Makes sense to me, but also, I needed to get a new pc anyway, so around the time I got it, it was a problem of the past, so I was like fuck it, we ball. Also, I still hold the opinion that 3 is the best and Dawn of Dreams can kick rocks. Thanks for the info!

@@OneSleepyGiant Welcome. And hell yeah, just means when games get a bit busier, they might not lag (depending on the game of course. there's a few where the workload is the thing that drops fps) And can't wait to hear about Onimusha 3 then. I still don't get why 3 is considered the best when 2 existed. 3 was always dissapointing to me while 2 was bigger and better than the first. The fact the game had affinities and different outcomes with the side characters made it very replayable. The game also had the best gameplay.
@OneSleepyGiant
@OneSleepyGiant 2 месяца назад
I respect the opinion, but yet I still think 3 is the best, replayability is def better in 2 tho.

@@OneSleepyGiant That's cool. I can dig it. To me 3 was just too looney toons for my tastes. Time traveling was dumb and some random kid with mommy issues got more attention than Samanosuke. It took away too much from the Samurai drama. It was supposed to be an epic final chapter for Sam and it was broken up too much by modern day France stuff just to increase sales in Europe. And gameplay wasn't a huge leap compared to what 2 established..
@OneSleepyGiant
@OneSleepyGiant 2 месяца назад
@@Obbie40 All that is fair, and I will elaborate more when I do 3, but I think by the time 3 dropped, the system was refined plenty. They changed little things that mattered like being able to stock the 5 Purple Orbs and such. I also enjoyed the added option to move with the analog stick, while being able to keep the tank controls and them moving on from the pre-rendered bgs. Also, I think the opening movie in 3 is one of the greatest in gaming. I'll have plenty to say about that, too lol. Shame that I just do not recall enjoying Dawn of Dreams even a fraction as much as the rest of the series.
@Obbie40
@Obbie40 2 месяца назад
@OneSleepyGiant It's been years since I played 3, so I might have a better opinion if I played now. But I remember not caring for the whip or gun gameplay of Michelle much. I definitely agree the intro is amazing and is one of the best made 20 years later. But the issue is it is so high octane that it makes the rest of the game pale in comparison. When you control Sam he's slow and can't do 1 percent of what he did in the intro. Might be a dumb complaint but past two games didn't give the main characters crazy anime powers in the intro. I get why you might dislike DOD because it is a noticeable shift from the first three. It's almost like a corny JRPG with levels and lame power of friendship nonsense. Regardless, looking forward to your Oni 3 video.
