As a civil engineer, to have this and I have never heard any case of collapse of these buildings, I give credit to the construction team, the government and the engineers handling this. Kudos. I only wish they had better modern plan and layout for it like developed countries around the world. Developers and government can replan it and build it. It's possible.

I was amazed by the sight of the multi storied buildings in onitsha on my way to Enugu in 1974/75 from Ibadan. Expecting to see shell shocked buildings being just a few years after the civil war ended I beheld behemoth sight of these multi storied buildings. Good to know its continued and almost fifty years later I can see what Onitsha looks now, thanks.

Onitsha, the city they gave our fathers £20 pounds to build. I'm really proud of my Igboness. That said, Onitsha really needs massive government intervention. Yes Onitsha has high and fine estates but it lacks virtually all the facilities that characterise modern cities. Government has to widen the roads, cover the open drainages, and add sidewalks to the roads. The city is in utter need of vegetation. If this is done, Onitsha will then take a modern look
@kensburg2660
@kensburg2660 2 года назад
You have just spoken my mind. High standard of regulation needs to be in place cos most of those buildings need to be refurbished and painted n white would be great idea, then plan it properly, widen the road n possibly make them one way roads but wide with beautiful side walks, road markings, road signs, green areas, trees, international standard of landscaping, interlocking n green areas to cover the red soil, standardized traffic light for all over the state roads, pedestrian crossings with proper signs, orderliness, then dredge the river niger especially the water front area of the whole city n construct beautiful water front just as they have in cape town with beautiful cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars etc, get rid of keke napeps, bikes, n introduce better city bus with proper management, possible transportation/metro line n Onitsha will be a very very beautiful city. Also same for all major cities in the State like Awka, Nnewi etc, a good metro to link/connect major cities n town in the State would help to modernize the State. I don’t know why we can’t be thinking how to modernize n develop up to international standard? Invest in education n healthcare facilities too 🤔🤔🤔

Thank you very much for this video. The topic about Onitsha City was very well researched. My mum used to tell me that when she was a young girl she used to go to Onitsha from the Mid-West for business and return back same day. As a child, I remember how plenty cars from the South-West used to drive through my village early in the morning and drive back in the evening to and from Onitsha for business. You have now made it a challenge for me to also visit that beautiful city one day. In addition to your report about the old way of water supply by the government, sadly that, that problem happened across most part of Nigeria. Water supply was once like that in the country. Where and when we got it wrong is hard to say today. You are personally playing your part by reporting and identifying problems that need solving. As your video about Onitsha showed, many of our problems today can be solved by us individuals and without waiting for the government. After all, the problems were caused by the governments.

Imagine how more beautiful Onitsha would have looked if the successive governments had done their bits by ensuring that all roads are well tarred, portable water made available, good management of waste disposal units put in place, and of course, a by-quarterly mandatory routine maintenance law that would compel all landlords to refurbish their buildings once every 4 years put in place, as well as mandating every landlords to plant trees in front of their buildings to cushion the harsh effects of Sun rays.

Lifts should be compulsory for any building upto 4 floors and above. The State Housing Authority should step in to ensure basic amenities are provided. Create enough spaces for playgrounds, car parks, green fields, fountains etc. If the right steps are not taken now, the whole place will soon become urban slum, too congested, suffocating, and will be unsuitable for normal human beings to live in. Also, constant maintenance is key. I'm super proud of the efforts, the achievements and I will be extremely happy to see that they are truly modernized and sustained. If there was no institutionalised endemic corruption in Nigeria(by some corrupt greedy, evil hearltess politicians), Nigeria would today be the richest and most industrialised advanced country in the world, with no single poor person. Nigeria, just like other African countries, is not poor, but poorly managed. It makes my heart to weep. While doing a research in Foreign Direct Investments in developing countries, I chose Nigeria as a case study. That was when I realised how rich Nigeria is: since the first production of oil in 1958 (when the first Nigerian crude oil was exported to Rotterdam, Holland) up until 2020, Nigerian government has earned more than 1.5 trillion US dollars in oil revenue alone) without revenue from Natural Gas). I am now doing research on energy security(resource wars). I encourage every Nigerian, and every African to read these two books; 1- Chapter 1-Nigeria: Political violence, governanance and corporate responsibility in a Petro-State, by Okey Ibeanu and Robin Luckham) in the book ”Oil Wars 2007, by Mary Kaldoe, Terry Lynn Karl & Yahia Said . 2-Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet. @@MrRoyck10 Healthy competition is good, encouraging a brother in his ventures is good too. It's also good to think highly of your people, Igbo are not peculiar in this regard...everyone thinks their people are awesome, there are competitive people everywhere too. Know this also, true greatness does not revel in braggadocio. The rest of the world will extol you. If they hate you, they'll still have to acknowledge your greatness, even if they have to do so begrudgingly. In one of Chinua Achebe's writings, he touches on the hatred towards Igbo in Nigeria, but he also harshly criticizes Ndigbo for hubris, overweening pride, and thoughtlessness which can invite envy and hatred. Onitsha needs an urban renewal plan. A good number of these developers can afford to build better designed houses with better amenities if standards are set and enforced. The state government should improve on the roads. They are too narrow. They should build wide sidewalks, because everywhere is a market in Onitsha. Have a ni open gutter policy. With good infrastructure more developers will invest. Onitsha has one of the highest population of middle income people in Nigeria, yet they live in substandard housing.

Onitsha is the best planned city in igbo land. Onitsha equally has good number of good roads compare to other cities. The city equally has the widest road in the east, the type of road that's only found in Lagos. The city is the only city in igbo land with clover leaf FLYOVER interchange, the type that's only found in Lagos. Onitsha equally has the best housing system for low income, high income, etc. Unlike in places like Owerri with high rate of urban slum, poor housing, poor dilapidated roads, open gutter, narrow or non existent roads.

I'm neither from Onitsha nor Obosi. I merely arrived in the town as a kid, shortly after the civil war in 1970. However, midway through this video, I could tell that Eboh did insufficient research before publishing it. His narration around the land tussles, must be taken with reservation. That Obosi grabbed Onitsha land is nonsensical. The real Onitsha ended in Inland Town, a little past St Charles College. That's what the records show. The rest of the land was Obosi. Even Ose Okwoodu was not Onitsha - Okwoodu came from Nsugbe. Mmili ezona, mmili ezona ka Nne m nata. Mkponkpo ite adaka tiwalu n'otu Obosi is a popular lullaby in much of Anambra State. Eboh, if you can locate otu Obosi, your narrative will take a more objective turn. Lastly, Awada Obosi is not Onitsha - it is in Idemmili North for a reason. I've commended you in the past for beautiful videography - if you must do narration, please cover all bases. Having said all that, I'm really concerned about what some of our people are doing in the name of business these days - and what they think is development. The spirit that fueled the frenzied construction of this now concrete jungle in and around Onitsha came from the Main Market (Nkwo Onitsha), which in itself was instituted according to Nri rites. This is important to our narrative as a people and our future aspirations, because the spirit of Nri has rules. And our people are forgetting and chasing after foreign gods - of gold and silver. I hope that we find our spiritual balance before delving into real skyscrapers.
