Pre-heated air is required for any engine with a venturi carburetor when the dewpoint and temperature are able to cause icing. "Venturi effect" Leading edge of an airplane wing is basically half a venturi, and when the leading edge ices up, the plane stops "flying". Moisture in the air turns to ice until things warm up.😅 your chainsaw doesn't know a warm air filter from cold sap!

Steve, you are a National Treasure... I called on the Stihl plant in Virginia Beach as a vendor back in the day. They should fly you out there and give you a plant tour. It's probably the most organized, clean, well laid out plant I have seen. You would thoroughly enjoy it. And if they were smart, they would ask you to join their R&D and design teams for a "what if" creativity meeting!

You are correct. Being a relative newbie to the world of chainsaws I read and re read the manual. In conversations with folks that have spent much of their lives using chainsaws I was surprised at the number of puzzled looks when I'd ask them if they swapped the shutter into winter mode on their saws.

@em4703
@em4703 5 месяцев назад
Important thing to mention: This winter mode is only good down from ~10 C above freezing (50 Fahrenheit) to 0 C (32 Fahrenheit). The air at these temperatures has alot of water vapor in it, and as the fuel is pulled inside the carb and vaporized, it cools that 10 C air to below freezing, creating ice deposits (like a bodyspray can getting colder as you spray away and vaporize the contents). At below freezing ambient air its not needed, as at that temperature and below the air is close to 0% humidity so there's no ice that can form. Using it below that temperature you're just putting dirtier air inside the air filter area, clogging it faster than usual (and potentially making the saw run richer due to the hot air being less dense than the cold one that it was tuned at).

@@em4703 Good info. So can you clarify at what outdoor temperature range you should start using Winter Mode? 10C is still pretty warm, so if you shouldn't use it when it's LESS than 10C, what range SHOULD you use it in???

As a Stihl owner of 35 years from an .010 to my newest MS660. I never have switched the winter/summer air door & have never had an issue with starting or performance. I did have to install a fuel carburetor renew kits as the diagrams failed. I think ethanol had a big part in that? But whatever works for you. My Saws are stored in my heated shop, chains ground with a CBN wheel on my Oregon 511AX grinder. Cool that I never realized this, but I'm a believer in cold air going into the engine only & had zero cold start problems using the choke. I also only use 93 octane & Stihl full synthetic oil & I am so impressed how clean my piston top is. Full synthetic oil mix is the bomb in my opinion.

Some Husqvarnas (certainly the 550xpg and 650xpg that I own) also have a plastic shield that clips over the fan housing to stop snow being sucked into the fan and blocking it.

After watching this video I had to check my Stihl 023. I grabbed an IPA and went out to the shed. It's 14 degrees here in the Fingerlakes NY. Sure enough my Stihl has the summer, winter plate in it. I'll be cutting up a downed Black Tree next week. Thanks for the tip.
