Only BIG Fish Bite During These Conditions (S6 E56)

Spent a week fishing the jetties with blue crabs, and finally after several days we landed three big black drum. My rod and reel put me at a severe disadvantage which meant I had to work harder to catch the fish. The weather conditions produced massive swells that made for a dangerous environment on slippery rocks.

yah slippery as all get out! Busted my booty almost every time I go despite “treading carefully”😅. Haha but I know I heard you wearing those jetty spikes pretty sure I was hearing the crunch of them against the rock. “Korkies”? Great product but imo they are overpriced and I have been searching for a better priced alternative. $150 for jetty spikes that just strap over the top of the shoe?😅 welp guess I gotta getta better job haha. Anyways I guess the silver lining is 150 for jetty spikes would be way better than a thousands of thousands emergency room bill…. so there’s that too no doubt.

I've never fished that jetty but have fished the Quintana jetty many times. I've noticed on youtube many people seem to get cut off a lot fishing the Surfside jetty. I don't fish the end but I don't have the problem of getting cut off fishing the Quintana jetty like everyone does on the Surfside jetty. That had to be very frustrating breaking off those fish like that. I use rods from 7'6" to 10". Great videos guys. I enjoy watching them.

Man I hate to be that guy, but I couldn't help but feel like there was very little regard for the health/safety of these fish. I hope I am wrong, but seeing it just get absolutely slammed against the rocks was appalling. Then towards the actual release, he had that bloody gash on his head.. If you are going to target these big fish, we need to be more careful when handling them. Holding them horizontally and supporting their weight, things like not holding by gill plates, etc. I am fairly certain both these fish probably died shortly after the release and that's a shame. We cannot save every fish we catch, but going the extra mile really makes a HUGE difference. Conservation is IMPERATIVE. Grabbing a vertical bull stuck in rocks by the lipgrippers and not supporting the fish's weight is absurd to me. I understand the rocks are dangerous, especially when you don't have the proper gear for it but that's certainly not the fish's fault. I don't know much about jetty/surf fishing to be honest, but I do know y'all should definitely have cleated shoes and PFDs on at the very least. Hell, maybe even a helmet in case you fell in! You should've just kept these fish if you weren't sure you could release them safely. Why not release on opposite side if it's calmer? Or a net of sorts? Just an idea/suggestion. Waiting for a big swell just to toss the fish right on the rock seems CRUEL. I'm no perfect angler, either, but I think it's important we share knowledge to keep our fisheries alive and well so we can continue to enjoy them! I am really not trying to sound like a hater, just trying to spread information so we can keep this sport alive. I know how it feels having a heartbreak after popping line on a nice sized fish! I commend you for not giving up and getting after them after all. Tight lines and stay safe out there!

@AustinCrawleyOutdoors Год назад
@yakkaboy - I’m not sure if you watch this channel often, but if you did you would know exactly where @MDLRFishing stands with regard to protecting the sport and fish. He didn’t respond because that’s not the type of person he is. I’ve never met him and never commented on any of his videos. I have watched a lot of his videos. Hopefully you noticed he took the time in this video to release the pressure from the drum he pulled up from the deeper water before releasing him back to the water. Most fisherman on RU-vid don’t do that. That clearly demonstrates a concern for the well-being of that fish. Most people on RU-vid fishing jetties and/or piers just throw fish back and hope for the best. If you watch this channel on a regular basis you’ll pick up on a lot of things he does or says that demonstrate he is someone who cares about and understands this sport. There are tons of people who probably need to receive a message like the one you posted, but I don’t think @MDLRFishing is one of them. Again, I’ve never met him, and I’ve never posted a comment on this channel before. I only responded because I don’t think your assessment of Mark is accurate. I won’t respond either, because nothing positive or constructive will come from a back and forth like this. I was surprised to see a negative comment about him personally and I don’t think it accurately reflects who he is or what he stands for.
