A good episode. What I find crazy is that Buster Merrifield (who played Uncle Albert) was a very different person to his character. Until he retired he was an area bank manager (a very spit-and-polish job in them days), only becoming a professional actor at age 57. He was tee-total, non-smoking fitness enthusiast; an Army instructor in PT and jungle warfare "durin da wawh". A swimmer and a runner and keen on disco dancing.

Josh, I could see you trying to hold back tears during Del's scene. This episode was difficult to watch especially losing Grandad. There are only 2 scenes in any sitcoms I've watched where I did shed tears - Del's emotional rant in this episode and Will Smith's Fresh Prince "To Hell With Him" scene regarding his deadbeat dad. Both Sir David Jason (Del Boy) and Nick Lyndhurst (Rodney) deserved Oscars for their performances. Grandad will always be an amazing character but now we have Uncle "During The War" Albert - another great character

I was lucky enough to be in the studio audience to see this particular episode recorded (at BBC Television Centre, London). Fantastic episode. John Sullivan had such a knack of injecting just the right amount of humour in an unavoidably emotional episode. The scene where Rodney misunderstands Del's behaviour was acting of the highest calibre. I noticed it drove you to tears, it shows how much love you have for the characters 👍
@vix_in_japan

Yep that scene where Del and Rodney have it out was a real eye opener for me as a kid and made me realize what true genius in writing is. Having lost all my grandparents at a young age I really identified with the emotions displayed and as I’ve got older the more I see it from Del’s POV. This whole episode is one of my all time favorites bittersweet that it is. Your reaction was spot on and confirms why you’re the only reactionist on RU-vid I give a stuff about.

People grieve in their own way. Some people grieve by creating levity to lessen the loss. In Ireland, we act somber at the burial, but afterwards we have a wake where we eat and drink and laugh as we celebrate the person's life and tell stories about them among friends and family.

Yeah I don’t think I’ve ever teared up at this scene as much as now. I lost my little brother a few years ago so those lines “they hold you up, drag you down, and then they….break your bloody heart” really cuts deep. Seeing Josh react to it is doubly sad, it makes me think when people get upset watching scenes like this, that they also know that pain.

Love that scene where tell basically tells off Rodney because it's like.... This is who del fundamentally is. With regards to the new character to replace Grandad, David Sullivan strongly considered having a female character and when he spoke to David Jason about it David said how can Del Boy treat a female character in the same way he treated Grandad, and so David Sullivan, in my opinion, took the correct decision in getting another male character and here we have the brilliant Uncle Albert.
