Originally, this was going to be final episode the show. Del's actor, David Jason wanted to leave the show, which would lead to a spin-off called Hot Rod about Rodney and Micky Pearce taking over Trotter's Independant Traders. Jason eventually decided against leaving the show in the end, though, so the episode's ending had to be re-written. Personally, I'm glad it turned out that way.

OFAH and the late great John Sullivan….the ability to create such comedic scenes interlaced with very moving emotional moments. For me this sets the tone for the later episodes, that bond they have. The last few mins of this episode are perhaps the best they did. Brilliant writing and acting

@matthewsands1572
@matthewsands1572 2 года назад
@@robalexander8065 Respectfully disagree. I think they are all great episodes and all the Christmas specials are good too, including the US one. For me, the only real duds was a few of the early episodes with Uncle Albert and all of the episodes after "Time in our hands" which should have been the final episode (and was originally supposed to be). IMO the episodes after "Time in our hands" were absolutely awful, far worse than the below par ones from the early Albert days and so bad that it didn't even feel like Only Fools and Horses anymore. But I have to say that everything from Frog's Legacy to Time on our Hands was (IMO) pure gold. But as you say, each to their own. Perhaps it is just personal taste. p.s. I just remembered Chance of a Lunchtime includes Trigger's story about his weekend away (which was one of the funniest moments in the show) so I definitely disagree that episode was a dud. But these things are subjective.

@@matthewsands1572 Fair point about the shows after Time on our hands. True, the Trigger story was funny - a case of the whole being less than the sum of its parts. I am a big fan of the first three series and particularly missed Grandad. That said, series 5 and 6 are the strongest in my opinion.

I'd like to talk about the ending of Del turning down Jumbo's offer to stay with Rodney: Clearly the only reason Del decided to stay in England was for Rodney. On all other counts, going to Australia would have been the best decision for Del. But Rodney threw one hell of a tantrum when Del considered going to Australia without him, and this was when Del realized how important their partnership was for Rodney. Rodney acted in a completely unreasonable manner in this episode. He needs to decide between one of two options: Option 1.Rodney is a mature grown-up person who can take care of himself and stand on his own two feet without Del holding his hand. Option 2.Rodney is still a kid and needs Del to hold his hand and support him. Rodney doesn't choose between Option 1 and Option 2, but rather he picks either one when it is convenient for him. Rodders wants to have his cake and eat it too. When Del wants to go to Australia, Rodney chooses Option 2 and gets angry at Del for even considering leaving him behind. But when it suits his convenience, Rodney also chooses Option 1. He frequently claims that Del is holding him back and that if it weren't for him, Rodney would be doing so much better with his life. Rodders even attempted to break up the partnership and start something on his own back in "Healthy Competition" from Series 3. Rodney ultimately needed to choose between one of the two options rather than wavering between the two to suit his present convenience. On the other side of the coin, I believe Rodney's reaction stems from the complexity of the sibling relationship. While Del and Rodney are frequently at each other's throats throughout the show like many brothers, it is always evident that they share a strong brotherly bond. The fact that Rodney was devastated at the prospect of he and Del being thousands of miles apart merely proves how strong that bond actually is. Finally, another thing I ought to bring up is that it's Del's business "brilliance" that always kept the Trotters going. Lots of people think Rodney couldn't make it on his own because he'd never been taught how to be independent. Del might've sent him the money from Oz, but things could've just as well gone wrong. He couldn't risk it and leave Rodney helpless if something bad had happened to him. After all, Del did promise their mum he would look after Rodders.

This was a very good episode - it was hilarious and sad. Uncle Albert was on top form and he is going to get even funnier. Del made a very tough decision not to leave and the sacrifices for his family. In real life, David Jason was about to leave the show and it was planned as the last episode for the show and they were planning a spin-off called Hot Rod but thankfully David Jason decided not to leave at the last minute and I'm glad he didn't because (with the exception of the next episode) the show went another level. Next episode A Royal Flush is worse than Video Nasty but after that every single episode all the way to Christmas Trilogy 1996 are incredible

Fun fact: This episode was initially intended to be the last one, hence why it has a conclusionary feel to it. By 1986, Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney) was working on other programmes and Sir David Jason (Del) had told John Sullivan that he wanted to move on as well. But there was a change and they carried on with it through Christmas specials, which is why there was a three year gap between series five and six.

As people are bound to point out sooner or later: this episode was actually written to end the show. The plan was for Del to leave for Australia, leading to a spinoff show titled 'Hot Rod', centred on Rodney trying to start up his own business. But during production they either got renewed or just didn't feel like the show should end like that, and so kept the episode but changed the ending around so Del gave up his opportunity to stay with his brother.

An arrest for possession of cannabis is a minor offence & would not result in a visa being denied. Very simplistic writing, he meets a guy he hasn't seen for years then within a few minutes he's a partner in a business in Australia & as quickly he decides to turn down the offer. Relocating to Australia is a little more complicated than that surely. As for a spin off show starring Rodney, that was never going to work. This episode like many others reveals that OFAH is basically a 'Steptoe And Son' rip off. The theme of a family member's ambitions being thwarted by family responsibilities & the inevitable sentimental scenes that follow. I expect John Sullivan realised that the show had nowhere to go after this so he introduced wives for Del & Rodney, then it became a different show altogether.
