This is a simple question I’ve asked people all around the world 🌎, and I always get a different answer. The funny thing is that when even two people from different countries start having a discussion on how many continents there are, there are always a couple of people who are so sure they are correct, they start treating everyone else as if they are idiots. (Obviously, that used to be me) haha 🙄
The thing I realized at some point is that we have been taught different things in school! 🤷‍♂️and with this simple question, you can start to visualize all the other things we have been taught differently, like:
History,
Who are the heroes and who are the villains
Who is god?
etc
My goal with this video was to spread a little bit of tolerance because I think the world needs it ❤️

No. This is a problem when the definition of a thing is unclear. there is no point of a serious discussion it if the definition is not clear.

The definition of a continent is ambiguous. Just go the wikipedia entry and see that 4, 5, 6 or 7 are all viable answers. 7 is the most common answer and it's more often called Australia than Oceania (although i was taught the latter)

There are 7 officially 1. North America 2. South America 3. Africa 4. Europe 5. Asia 6. Australia 7. Antarctica And then there’s the submerged 8th continent called Zealandia.

i half agree! Yes tolerance, but do the tolerant need to tolerate the intolerant? ;) Anyway.. I do find the various answers interesting. I guess the definition of a continent isn't clear? Or what we define as one? In the end, this should be scientific and not confusing.

I was taught there are seven in school in the US, but when my godfather opened my eyes to the bias in the numbering, I've decided there are four. Afro-eurasia America Oceania/Australia Antarctica Europe, Africa, and Asia are as much subcontinents as India is. How is it Pangaea was a supercontinent made up of all continents, but landmass that never separated from itself is classed as separate continents? My answer is that it's muddling the difference in the cultures and ethnicites of the inhabitants of each subcontinent with pure geology. If the earth were an uninhabited planet we looked at through a telescope, do you really think we would identify seven continents on it? I don't think so. I could accept a difference in opinion on the exact numbering, but there is no way Europe and Asia are separate continents just because of a mountain range. That's ridiculous.

The continents can be anywhere from Four , Five , Six or Seven. 4 continents of the World - Americas , Afro-Eurasia , Australia , and Antarctica. 5 continents of the World - North America , South America , Afro-Eurasia , Australia , and Antarctica 6 continents of the World - North America , South America , Africa , Eurasia , Australia and Antarctica. 7 continents of the World ( how I taught and most common one ) : North America , South America , Asia , Europe , Australia and Antarctica Reasons is being the definition is a largely land and with a body of water. Europe and Asia are only culturally divided. Africa is only divided from Asia because of the Suez Canal . North and South America are only divided by Panama Canal . The Suez Canal and Panama Canal are man-made canal. Australia ( the continent and not the country ) can also be called Australasia and Oceania : Australia - The continent of Australia includes the country of Australia ,as well as the island of state of Tasmania ,and the eastern half of the island of New Guinea , which is part of Papua New Guinea . Some smaller Pacific and Indian Ocean islands are also sometimes considered the part of the broader region of Australasia or Oceania . Australasia - this name is refer to the continent of Australia , including the surrounding islands and sometimes even New Zealand Oceania ( many people : do considered as continents but scientist " do not classified it as a continent) - this name is used to describe the region that includes Australia , New Zealand , and other Pacific Island countries although it's technically not a continent in itself . Sahul - this is a name used in some scientific contexts to describe the continent of Australia when it was connected to New Guinea during the last ice age.

@@diogoferreira7427 I don't know why the culture is important because the difference in south west Asia + south Asia's cultures is also very different compared to the rest of Asia. Also eastern parts of Europe are different from western. Something to think about.
