What you carry is interesting, but why you carry it is facinating. Deep dives into your equipment choices, and the story's behind the decisions to carry, or not provide context and insight. Please continue with the campaign bag, and current Sawyer's bag. I may never go to a wildland fire, but knowing what you take, and why may help me be prepared for other emergencys, or at least a better reaction to something.

The jerky is good. But a little tip from former military. Under stress 1 m.r.e. can last a full day. Entree when you can,brown rice later and so forth. Also have a chocolate bar. The m.r.e. will give you the calories all day and the chocolate bar will give you a burst of energy when needed most! Keep the chocolate inside the blanket

The nice thing about the chest rig for the radio is where your anntena ends up. I've noticed our structure guys are using an old style leather shoulder harness that keeps the radio low at the waist, same as on your belt. The problem being shielded radio waves. As long as you remember to turn around when your radio doesn't work you're fine. Lol. I used a chest harness in search and resq for many years and it does get in the way sometimes but for me it's worth the life safety aspect of my radio working. That said I have dropped the radio into a side pocket and used a remote antenna on my pack. Not an option if you have to deploy and want your radio under with you, but man does it work. Thank you sir, I love all your content. This makes me want to wildland again though.

I enjoyed the heck out of this dual video as I too was a volunteer firefighter. I did not do wildland per se but did do rural pasture land/farm land type and of course in town structure. I did carry quite a bit of the equipment that you have here. I served 25 years on my small town fire department.

Heck sometimes 6 liters of water doesn't even cut it, really gotta suck down the water when it gets above 100. Worked for a state fire kitchen, loved it, but unlike those fancy caterers, no AC, swamp cooler, adequate shade or any proper ventilation, just a refer truck to duck into to cool down. Cooking massive amounts of food it's 110+ is pretty intense.

Couldn't agree more about the wool! I'm a total believer. I've had issues with hot, swollen feet and realized my skin reacts to anything synthetic. I wear darn tough socks year round now as well as merino base layers when it's cold. Pricey stuff, but you will never regret investing in it and my feet never get hot now. Plus if your socks ever wear out Darn Tough will replace them for free so it's actually cheaper in the long run!

When you talked about why you quit the fire dept you were spot on. I been a volunteer on three different fire dept and there all a like. One of the biggest problem I ran up against is paid firemen don’t want to work with volunteers due to the IAF and everything else you said happen in all the units I’ve been with. Keep on truck’n your doing fine.

Thank you for your updated firefighting bag content video. My nephew is just starting his second season in wildland firefighting. He watches your videos, as do I, so we have another topic of shared interest. I especially enjoy specificity, so please go into detail on each item--not just the what but the why you choose what you choose. I'm sorry to hear that you are shortening the length of your commitment to fires from 14 to 7 days because it's people like you, the seasoned fire fighter, that is so very needed not just for your expertise in many aspects of fire fighting and training and assisting the next generation of fire fighters--perhaps even my nephew. On the other hand, I understand setting boundaries based on your priorities and values in order to balance all your obligations in life.

I'm retired from the U.S. Forest Service and even though I only spent 4 years in fire management, one of these as a seasonal for a summer while in college, I had over 120 fire assignments. They ranged from campfires escaping and burning a couple of square feet of duff, up to being on the North Fork Fire (475,000 acres or so) in Yellowstone NP in 1988. I had six positions on my Red Card when I retired, two of them as a trainee where I was more than half way through the task book. I was usually assigned to hand crews when I started, but also was an FPT with a Type VI engine as a patrol vehicle. Some years passed and I was a crew boss and ran a whole range of crews on fires. I'm a graduate forester and switched to recreation and lands (special use permits, land exhanges, etc.) for the remainder of my career. Ironically, I obtained more ICS qualifications after I left fire management, a story in itself. The challenge with the line pack/24 hour pack is the diversity of assignments you get into. My 24 hour pack resided in the toolbox. At any moment I might have to use it for the hasty stage of a search and rescue, being told to drive to a LZ to be flown into a wilderness fire or being forced to camp out overnight for a variety of reasons. I also used it in winter, with a few additions, to provide initial care for hypothermia victims. The requirement is that this line/24 hour bag is such that you are self sustaining for 24 hours, no matter the situation. This is a challenge of weight and space. I also had a winter patrol pack with the basic avalanche evaluation and rescue gear that I threw on when on cross country ski patrols and on a snowmobile. This two part video you produced is excellent. My 24 hour kit and yours are strikingly similar with the exception of the GPS and weather instrument. These were not available for me as they hadn't been developed yet. I went on a fire in southern California at Thanksgiving up until the middle of December back in 1980 and froze. I was never without a space blanket from there forward. The challenge for project fires is similar and my Red Card had crew boss, strike team leader - crew trainee, resource unit leader, situation unit leader trainee, Type III plans chief, Type IV and V IC, incident information officer and security/law enforcement on it. I had a short kit for running a plans section in my truck at all times and pilot type briefcases (big ones) next to my desk for resource/situation positions where I could set up shop and build a plans section nearly anywhere that was sufficient to run for Type III incidents till they demobed and for the first couple of days of initial attacks that turned into Type I incidents. The work was diverse and ever changing. I was a field supervisor on one of the most heavily visited ranger districts in the National Forest System. I was also an on-call claims and personnel misconduct investigator, which required one more huge briefcase next to my desk. I never knew what I was going to do on any given day. While watching your video I realized how much I miss the camaraderie, dedication and professionalism I was surrounded by in both firefighting and in the agency as a whole. Now, due to my knees giving out, a couple of significant injuries and some surgeries I can no longer backpack or take day hikes and only have my memories. Do it while you can!
@wannabetowasabe
@wannabetowasabe 5 лет назад
I also used to struggle as to what I carried in my backpack and my day packs. I seemed to have a knack for coming on emergency incidents while off duty and in wilderness areas, so my packs tended to be a bit on the heavy side. Do I carry this or can I leave it home? It was a struggle.

Cody there is ongoing research on a hydration bladder vs canteens. The problem with the bladder is that while the FF is getting enough water he is not getting food to snack on because there are fewer or no breaks. Because of the work rates are going down. Consider having your crew stop work for 5 minutes every hour, throw off the pack and eat some nuts/gorp/jerky/power bars, and maybe swig some "electrolyte" drink. I carry a 1 qt canteen in a belt pouch just for this reason but I also carry a bladder. As a faller I carry eye drops in my shirt. And ibuprofen, noise and sun give me a headache. I also carry my cell phone (and necessary chargers). Of course there is also a chainsaw, Dolmar, axe, wedges, spare chain, and more.
@davidhawkins847

Cody, Saw your set of spare batteries at the top of the screen. You may want to consider or take a look at the Storacell instead of taping them together. It comes in a couple different sizes and provides a bit more protection for preventing accidental shorting. I use a couple different units depending on battery for holding my rechargables when out hiking.
