Psyké Underground (previously Sirocco and Turbine ) is an indoor shuttle roller coaster of the Shuttle Loop model in the Belgian amusement park Walibi Belgium . The Sirocco was built in 1982 by Anton Schwarzkopf and was the first launch roller coaster in Europe . This attraction has a hip bar , on both the old and new trains. The roller coaster closed its doors in 2008, but reopened after a major facelift on July 13, 2013.
The Sirocco was built for a Japanese amusement park but was never delivered. Eddy Meeùs , the founder of Walibi Belgium , was offered the track for BEF 75 million with the claim that the track would attract 300,000 extra visitors. After an advance of BEF 45 million, the rest of the amount would be paid if the park actually attracted 300,000 extra visitors. Since the park failed to attract 300,000 extra visitors, the remaining BEF 30 million did not have to be paid.
In 1997, an incident caused the train to hang upside down for 1 hour and 40 minutes. This was because the flywheel from the launch mechanism did not have enough speed. As a result, the train was still looping forwards, but not backwards. Visitors sat upside down on the train for more than an hour and a half. This accident was immediately world news and even featured on the American news channel CNN . There were no injuries.
When the attraction was built in 1982, it was just open air. This remained the case until 1999.
In 1999, after complaints about noise pollution from local residents, a building was built around the Sirocco. The attraction was given an industry theme and was renamed Turbine . The building reduces the noise produced by the roller coaster. The reopening happened in 2000.
The Turbine was temporarily closed at the end of 2008, and in October and November 2009 the building served as the location of the Zoo Terror haunted house.
On April 18, 2011, it was announced that the Turbine would reopen in 2012. The roller coaster would be completely covered to avoid noise pollution for the neighbors. The zone around the Turbine was to be transformed into the Fabulous Area , but the theme of the roller coaster itself and the train types were not yet known at that time. The reopening of Turbine was also included in an environmental permit for Walibi Belgium until 2031. The reason for the reopening of Turbine was the iconic nature of the roller coaster and the immense popularity that the roller coaster enjoyed with the general public, even when closed.
Despite the earlier reports about the reopening of Turbine, Walibi Belgium announced in 2012 that Turbine would remain closed due to construction works. The roller coaster would reopen in 2013 under a new name. Construction works were to start in mid-May 2012 and last 12 months.
At the beginning of March 2013, Walibi Belgium announced that the reopening of Turbine would be postponed by three months. The opening was planned for June 2013. In mid-April 2013, the first photo of the new Turbine train appeared on the internet. On April 13, after more than five years of inactivity, the first test run of the renewed Turbine took place: the new train (from Gerstlauer ) on the track, and the flywheel launch was replaced by a launch by linear induction motors (LIM). Two days later, a video of the new trains during this test drive appeared on the official RU-vid account of Walibi Belgium.
On Thursday 16 May 2013, Walibi Belgium announced that from now on the attraction will be called Psyké Underground. The attraction is all about the world of Walibi and Squad. [5] It was announced that the attraction would open in June 2013.
