The Ontario government made an announcement today that it says will help stabilize electricity prices for the long-term, create jobs, and move the province closer to net-zero emissions.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford was in Clarington today to mark the beginning of site preparation for Canada’s first grid-scale modular reactor at the Darlington nuclear site.
Energy Minister Todd Smith joined the Premier to mark the milestone. Smith says the reactor will attract more investment in the province’s economy. According to the Ministry of Energy, the reactor will be the province’s first nuclear reactor built in a generation.
In March of this year, Niagara-based E.S. Fox was awarded the contract to deliver the early site preparation work. This work will include water supply, electrical power, information technology, and road services.
Currently, around 60% of Ontario’s daily power usage comes from nuclear plants. The government says nuclear power will be the “backbone” of Ontario electricity in years to come as the province looks to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
According to a 2020 study by the Conference Board of Canada, once open, the new Darlington plant would employ 200 people during operations and 2300 during planning and development.
It’s scheduled to be completed by 2028.

Good about time new plants start getting built especially with trudolf running around

Net zero greenhouse emissions!! But what about all the other problems?? They are just trading one for the other. It's like picking up litter from the street and throwing it in the garbage. You really didn't solve the main problem.

No it’s not even close, if it’s just properly maintained. Mathematically the overall potential risks of nuclear power are almost negligible for the output, and compared to any alternative system. It can also be isolated, and spent materials are infinitely easier to manage at such small amounts.

@@lightweightjive My brother in law and his neighbor worked at a nuclear power plant and both died at an early age from cancer. Also have you ever talked to fishermen who fish near a nuclear power plant and been told about the "monster" type fishes in the water.

@@ericgeorgetruckgrilling Nuclear power is incredibly safe. It's quite literally just boiling water to spin turbines.

That's a no. Solar cells and wind turbines consume more energy to make than they generate in their entire lifetime.

When only 42% of Ontario voted in the last election, you can blame the 58% of people that didn't even get up to get to the polls. Ford got voted in again with 1.5 million votes out of 4.5 million votes total. That's 33%

nuclear energy is ok when all is good ,but when it goes bad ...well i need not explain.

People always look at the bad. Fact is new reactors are extremely safe. When built correctly. This is needed for the EV car push.

We've had a hand full of accidents at commercial power plants since the first plant in 1957. And nothing currently has the same power density. We need more reactors. Renewables aren't there yet. Building more fossil fuel power plants in 2020s is ridiculous.

No other green option, wind mills cost too much, not enough hydro dams can be built and solar makes no sense in the northern climate. Nuclear is as clean as it gets as long as its built on stable ground and taken care of properly.

canada has an excellent safety history when it comes to nuclear power. as do other countries such as france. it becomes a problem when it's treated irresponsibly such as building one on the shoreline of a small island with a long history of seismic activity and tsunamis without appropriate design considerations...
