I don’t understand how you call yourself a journalist and not say why he didn’t qualify. What reason did the cra give to disqualify him? Something tells me he was not qualified to begin with.
wanna tell the world your income and expenses? what specifically do you do to make money... didnt think you wanted to so why should a news publication announce to the world when that information isnt going to be willingly published.
@@butwhytharum do you know how to read? If his income was too high, they can say his claim was denied due to income level, or hours worked. If you want to know I make 150k total compensation.
Crazy how the government goes full beast mode on the little guy who owes $38k, but is hunky dorey with giving their friends at GC Strategies $65 million for doing nothing.
Another CERB sob story. Poor me, I didn't know it wasn't free money when I applied for it 18 times and ignored every warning for a year and half... Now I'll just declare bankruptcy and keep it forever.
It was made very plain that CERB was an emergency benefit. And that was up to the claimant to determine their intial eligibility. If you were already receiving pension or unemployment benefits, you were not eligible. And the government warned they would be coming after repayment if you received ineligible payments. My pension is the same and I knew with in 20 seconds of hearing the announcement of the CERB that I was ineligible. This guy should have known too.
I run a small business and earned enough for the benefit. I'm also on Ontario Disability AND my business was affected by the shut-down. Am I eligible? All monies were declared.
He no doubt did, but thought he would slip under the radar, well, this is the end result. I'm in the same finacial boat as he is. Except I didn't apply for SERB, Like most Canadians on CPP , we knew like all things Liberal,, SERB was a cheap trick, a vote buying gimmick. Lots of Canadians got sucked in. A neighbour has 3 teenagers, each one of them applied for SERB, as well as his wife, and surprise of all surprised all 4 of them got it. Will they be asked to pay it back? Not too likely, they're part of his voting block, and they'd make a big stink.😮😮
as an honest tax payer that never took advantage of CERB but know many that did I hope the CRA claws back every penny and I'm glad to see they are finally taking action to do so - I feel for this gentleman and hope he can get resolution, but the eligibility rules were clear.
Ya they were clear and I did meet them, made over $7K in my business and they are still coming after me, something wrong with the system when you met the eligibility and did nothing wrong and they still come after you. Maybe one day when you experience the injustice of this Corrupt Gov't, you will wake up.
You were an laid off but you had income coming in old age pension.... The CREB was for those who didn't qualify for unemployment and had no other income.. I feel that he didn't qualify under the rules that the government put in place but he applied anyways. So yes, as the government said they would get the money back
I wasn't qualified (i don't really know) but i only took one month, i doubt they will come after me..its those who went crazy like my buddy who took 16k without being for-sure qualified. He's nervous as hell lol. Me I dont' care..2k i can pay back if need be..16k..not so easy.
That's you're assumption. He may not have been on CPP during the pandemic. We don't know how old he is. There are countless stories like this. It's the govt's mistake, but you go ahead and blame individuals for wanting their tax money back when they needed it most. Trudeau loves authoritarians like you.
hahahh thank you...i guess it means he tells his friends which car they should buy or not buy? I'ma cannabis consulatant if that is' the case..where's my 16k!!!!!??
I contacted CRA over repayment issues. They garnished my taxes kept sending me the same bill and then later called to return money i had payed onto the debt because i didnt actually owe any money.... This is the civil service we get when we proritize our economy around wealth and industry.
We. Speak for yourself. I'm a non voter who is supposed to be free to express himself and be equal before and under the law. 34% non voter = 134% voter. Not possible, because they don't exist. So how am I complaining at you right now then?
What is the specific reason that the CRA is making him pay it back? He must've read the eligibility list and found he was eligible at the time....or was he not qualified to begin with? Does the CRA not indicate to the client the reason why they are clawing it back? Why was this not part of the interview/report????
CERB transitioned to CRB and it lasted until October 2021. It looks like this gentleman took the full extent of the benefits. The only way he would have to repay the benefits is if he went back to work and still collected it. That would be fraudulent. I hope that isn't the case here that would look poor on CTV's part.
He was already receiving full OAS and CPP benefits. I hope he was paying his taxes on his side hustle. Some CERB claimants were exposed for defrauding various social agencies and programs for years.
For those who don’t/can’t understand how he ended up collecting over $38K here’s how: CERB was for 4 months at which time it transitioned to CRB. So he collected that for the remaining time which he said was 1.5 years. Hence, the +$38K amount.
CRA does reviews on tax returns routinely. If you deemed to owe CRA, then you have to pay. It is that simple. The review found this person was not eligible. So just pay up.
He was a government employee, was he not, an auto inspector, as in well paid, underworked and one hell of a pension, yea dude, you need to pay it back, you had no reason to qualify.
@@kevingoodwin5177 there was NO way I was using my life long hard earned savings retirement because of the government's decision to close my business! Hope you have enough to live a long and prosperous life. I think I still do......
Bc CERB was for 4 months at which time it transitioned to CRB. So he collected that for the remaining time which he said was 1.5 years. Hence, the +$38K amount.
Hmmm while I slogged it out going into work everyday to avoid having to take Cerb, paid my taxes, risked my life and family's life because my job was deemed essential. I have very little if any sympathy.
I'm up the creek if that living wage I got for 18 months has to be returned. Poverty sucks and if this guy didn't need it, which is only 30% probable, he should repay it. Seriously, if I have to pay even 1/100 of it back, I'll be out of money for things like bread and toilet paper for the next 6 months.
@@jptrainor Yeah, I agree that this sounds fishy. Like he took early retirement, OAS, CPP and CERB and thought it wouldn't matter. Paying taxes is not a reason to collect emergency response benefits. That said, I'm here to defend myself and those in my boat, not him.
Well... you have nothing to worry about if you appropriately took the money and you were actually eligible, if you weren't eligible and you took the money. No one should feel bad for you either
You take free money you should pay it back, we have been paying for all these hand outs in interest for the last 3 years, whoever took it and can work should go work and pay it back.
It’s NOT FREE MONEY! We PAY MORE THAN ENOUGH TAXES.. We pay for our EI & PENSION, as well. The GOVERNMENT SPENDS OUR MONEY, ON THEM & THEIR FAMILIES! LIVING THE HIGH LIFE!
I am in the same boat .. I was working at a farmers markets and had made enough to be able to apply for CERB. Now they want it back. They said my rcpts. were not enough and They stated that i should have driven to the closest bank ( 45 min away) after each market and deposit the money in my bank. Then use it. I did appeal and the repeated it does not count unless it had been deposited in the bank. No I owe they same as this gentleman. I am now on disability and they take half of my GST and tax refunds etc. I will be paying it back for the rest of my life!
Hard to feel sorry for this guy. He should not have applied for it if he wasn’t working. As far as paying taxes that is what is paying for your cpp and health care. He was dishonest and has to pay the piper
@@LifeOdysseyMotivation No they aren't. That's ridiculous. Why are you making some weird artificial distinction? CPP is a tax, like any other tax. It is an involuntary payment or deduction to the govt. It's your money, just like any other tax. It's not part of general revenue, but it's still an imposed tax.
It is only fair that the greedy have to answer for their illegal actions ! There is no such thing as a free lunch! A person can do freeloading for some time, but at one point you have to face the consequences of your greedy action !!
Canadians should be required and allowed to pay at their own pace, Its not like JustinFlation is making Zelenski pay back the money he was given, and he WONT. Government tax money should be for CANADIANS and CANADIAN PROJECTS and should STAY IN CANADA. That being said, He took advantage of the system and should pay. But should he be shamed for being put in a situation that the PM created? Absolutely not.
Imagine that, gov giving you free money. Then taking it all back. How does he survive on just his pension now without the part-time? I guess government wants him to go back to work now for next 2 years so he can pay them back all that money and extra taxes or maybe they will forgive him now that it's all over the news, but the rest will still have to go back to work and pay pay pay! Yey government!
I know the whole CERB thing was a mess. My hairdresser was off forever because of the lockdowns. She applied for Cerb, got one month then oddly switched her to EI which does have tax come off. It was about $400 less than cerb. Then at tax time they wanted the full $2000 back for the cerb she got. There were alot who this happened too. None of it made sense. I’m wondering if this guy got cerb then EI? Not sure if he was truthful but there were quite a few who got screwed.
You were actually being taxed on CERB as well, you were just given the whole $2,000 at one time and expected to withhold the amount of tax dollars from that 2000 that you made(it's considered income)...CERB wasn't tax free
@michelleryder2712 because if you qualify for EI you were switched over to that program and if you got a check from CERB the payments were actually in advance. I could be wrong but that's probably why she was told to give $2,000 back
How did he get that much? For the typical applicant it was $2k per month for 7 months = $14k. I wonder who told him he qualified and if he got it in writing.
What a joke. He's just playing at this point. My wife came here from a literal jungle. She fails to understand many concepts, but she easily grasped the concept of having to repay it. She only took it twice at the beginning in case I were to lose my job over COVID. She saved a piece of every one of her maternity payments and had no trouble paying it back when the time came. It was for EMERGENCIES. Screw this guy and everyone that did the same.
Did he hear about the ArriveCan App trial.? A whole division of government were issued CERB cheques WHILE WORKING AT THE SAME TIME FOR THE GUVERNMENT [sick]. I don't believe it even showed on their T4's 😮!!. I would recommend that the gentleman look into that .. I have been meaning to myself. GodSpeed GodBless 😊.
The real question canadians should be asking is why do we pay unemployment benefits seeing as its our own money and were not entitled to it. CRA needs to be dissolved and there should be charges laid against all of them for theft .
I'm always amazed at how the cra hounds seniors and middle income earners like a pack of wild dogs. If this guy has a couple if million in the bank then I stand corrected. Meanwhile Canada has major money launders and developers funneling billions through our economy. Fascinating. As if we dont get taxed enough.
It's _always_, _always_, _always_, the middle guy. I have no recollection of Government at any level, ever saying "hold up here, we employ 39% of the population", "let's cut back wages".
