It’s been a long few days of cleaning up for the Ontario Northland Railroad as they hurry to get the Kirkland Lake sub back for freight service.
The north section of Swastika junction rarely gets used these days as there are no trains destined in between Timmins/Cochrane and Noranda so it was a nice surprise to see them using it.
Although it is nice to have a junction like this, Swastika junction is a very sharp wye as there are multiple large mountains and rivers in the surrounding area so they had to make due with what they had. This ended up being a huge hassle for the Ditcher crew as they had to fight the sharp curves and grade to make it out of Swastika.

The concrete pad where the conductor was standing used to be a a MOW shed where they parked the speeders, or "putt-putt"s as we called them when we were kids.

Yep Swastika and well many other parts on the system have been changing. It’s kind of sad to see little things like that go.

Yessir it’s been a while since something has used the north end of the wye. Im glad I decided to go out for it, I probably won’t see that thing getting used again.

They should use geotex or geogrid cost few bucks but better on soft ground.Hudson's bay railroad and cpkc,cn and oilfield use more and more due soft ground.Lucky fuel and oil spill never happen.thanks video😮

I think it was rail failure that caused the derailment and not so much the ballast/ground. The rail condition on some parts of the KL sub are bad so it was only really a matter of time before something like that happened. But thankfully nothing spilled and or it was at the rear of the train.

Wait, is this a three-man crew or does the conductor reappearing at 21:40 mean there's nobody watching the shove? Or are they backing onto a section of the line where the conductor could see that there were no obstructions within the length of the train and it's sufficiently out of the way that nobody's going to be wandering onto the tracks? Also, man, I can just about understand the sentiment of "Our town's always been called Swastika, so we're not going to rename it just because that nasty guy perverted the symbol" but there's a business in town called Swastika Laboratories, which really does sound like the excessively corny evil corporation in a video game.

@@beeble2003 it was a two man crew but at 21:40 they weren’t moving more than a couple inches so it wasn’t a real problem. Like you mentioned, there is no real risk of someone walking on the tracks as there is only about 200(if that) people living in Swastika, and the KL sub is on the far end of town so yeah no risk. And for the town of Swastika I honestly appreciate them keeping the name instead of changing it as it really doesn’t matter what the name is, If you catch my meaning. And well the town is not pronounced the same as the symbol swastika. For the last thing the laboratories is a very important geological company for the many mines for the KL region.
