I wanted to get an Junglas but I really missed my RTAKII so I went with an RTAKII. My old one dulled fairly quick and it was 5160. The one I have now stays sharp and I took it out everyday since I got it and it's edge held up great, far better than my old one but then again, I have the 125th Anniversary Collectors Edition RTAKII. I couldn't find a regular RTAKII since OKC closed down but I'm glad I went with the one I have. The fit and finish is far better on it, it's almost like an Ontario Presentation grade RTAKII and it came with a black leather sheath. I use a honing rod when I first get my knives and I did little honing on the RTAKII since it already came razor sharp. I actually love this knife. I might go with a kydex sheath for it. I don't like 1075 on large blades unless the heat treat is excellent on it. The RTAKII's that had the chipping issue were 1095 and they switched to 5160 around 2013 or 2015 I believe, then in 2020 they switched to 1075.
Great job! Rtak 2 was my go to large knife a few years ago. It was right on the cusp of Ontario’s transition from 5160 to 1075 on many models. I never had one chip, even though I DID have an Ontario kukri in 5160 chip pretty bad. The rtak 2, however, caused me a different problem. After chopping repeatedly through a tough tree, I had the primary grind wobble on me on 2 separate rtak’s. My theory is that the lower 53-55 Rockwell coupled with the thinner edge geometry coupled with the friction and heat generated from chopping deep, over and over , and removing the “stuck” blade from the tree caused the lower rockwelled, thin edge to heat up to the point of becoming malleable and thus taking a wobble in the primary grind. I think the reason that condor doesn’t have this problem is the thicker edge geometry on their similarly hardened blades(53-55). I would love to see a video of hard use on this knife to see what your experience is. Keep up the good work. 👍
God stuff .I'm hoping you'll review the Esee CM6 as it keeps calling to me .I prefer the look of it to the Esee 6 but there's not a whole lot of comparison videos from people I trust .
I love my ESEE Junglas, it's definitely the Better Knife,... but the RTAK II fits my hand perfectly. I really like the RTAK II, its a good knife for the money.
Your description of what happened with Ontario and Esee is silly. I have never had an issue with my RTAK-II, had it for 12 years. Put TKC scales on it, stripped, and put a patina on the blade. I have seen the chunks missing from blades online. Ontario as seemed like their knives were made extremely cheaply when compared to Esee, and that reflected in the price. The coatings on the Esee knives is primo compared to Ontario, as well as fit and finish. Not surprised that Ontario went under; still sad to see, they are iconic. They could have improved their knives, but it seemed like they were trying to make it appear as if they had improved, but really were just going cheap and Chiese made. I hope whomever ends up with the name can restart the company and be competitive. We are in an unprecedented time with all the good, cheap knives now available, and all the insane super steel knives with insane fit and finish are available for the price... and the internet keeps hyping it up...
Nice yeah agreed Ontario is a less refined product and crap QC! I lost 2 handle screws on my big bushcrafter the first time and rat 7 was loose out the box but they're serious for under $100 thanks for the vids
Back in the day, dummy me went with the Ontario “Bushcraft” Woodsman in 5160, because it was the only one I could find that came naked, and it gave me Wood...handles. lol
I used to have the RTAK2. I got it after extensive research (aka youtube) on nutnfancy videos and he liked the 5160. And the price difference between it and ESEE was double (RTAK2 was like 85 bucks? And Junglas was 180)... gave it to my dad for his portaging trip. I'm sad to see that Junglas is now like $400
I have seen that company selling it for 399. If you look at every thing that company is selling, it's all double price. Been a while since I scrolled down far enough to find it
I got one two years ago. Was pretty decent but I broke it battoning some tough firewood. Wish it lasted longer. Are they still making these? I thought Ontario went down last summer.
