In Disney and Pixar's ONWARD, two teenage elf brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot (voices of Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) get an unexpected opportunity to spend one more day with their late dad and embark on an extraordinary quest aboard Barley's epic van Guinevere. Like any good quest, their journey is filled with magic spells, cryptic maps, impossible obstacles, and unimaginable discoveries. But when the boys' fearless mom Laurel (voice of Julia Louis-Dreyfus) realizes that her sons are missing, she teams up with a part-lion, part-bat, part-scorpion, former warrior - aka The Manticore (voice of Octavia Spencer) - and heads off to find them. Perilous curses aside, this one magical day could mean more than any of them ever

My favorite thing about this movie is how Barley is so into magic but isn’t jealous when Ian becomes the “magical” brother. He’s always right there to encourage and support him. Ian was longing to have a male role-model in his Dad, but turns out he had one in his brother all along.
@hiddenechoes
@hiddenechoes 2 года назад
That spoke volumes to how much love there was there in a mentor parental relationship and no rivalry, just pure joy for his brother 💙

That's what I'm saying! When I first watched this movie, I thought his brother was going to be upset and jealous! But when I saw that he was so excited that his brother has the magic gift and he didn't and his response with his actions throughout the movie, speaks volumes! By far Barley is the definition of a bottle of pure innocence giving nothing but love and support for his kid brother. I give my love for the Lightfoot brothers.

@@hiddenechoes - and it was such an insight into Barley’s character. The moment Ian discovered his “gift” was during the same arc Barley was being made out to be “annoying…” This moment is a sign that he’s not really that kind of character, but it took Ian until the second act to realize he was wrong to think his brother was a “screw-up.”

@@vanessaragland4362 - I grew up as the youngest sibling with much older sisters who always supported me so this aspect of the movie really resonated with me. Not all siblings have jealousy towards each other and I was so happy this movie took that angle for the older-brother character.

Exactly. If we had seen Ian and the dad communicate it might’ve been weird. Like they never had a relationship cause he was so little and has no memories of him, but the older brother for sure knew dad. It was a nice ending

This one really does sneak up on you in the best possible way. Growth throughout the movie is thinking at the start that Barley is supper annoying and in your face, but then realising by the end that everything he was doing came from a place of just trying to love and support his family and his little brother as much as he could. He is an amazing brother and he really deserved that closure
@mycroft16

This movie has you so distracted with the magic and the quest and bringing Dad back that you kinda don't notice what it's really doing... until it just gut punches you with Ian realizing he had a father figure in Barley. Barley who has always been there for him, never given up on him, and never been jealous of him. It was a pretty great film before, but that moment and the things that follow after elevated it to awesome. Also, Pixar made us freaking cry about a damn van.

That line, when Ian tells his Brother, "No! You say goodbye." Broke me even worse than the scene when he realizes how his brother was there for him. That level of awareness that his brother needed that closure more than he did. Priceless. When my friend's Mother was dying from, Alzheimer's related, sepsis, she was given the horrible burden of making the choice to remove her from life support, because her Father couldn't bring himself to make that choice, for both personal and religious reasons. After the doctor made it clear that, keeping her on life support would only be prolonging the pain, for everyone, she chose to let her go. But, after that, she couldn't bring herself to go into her Mother's room and say goodbye. And it has eaten at her ever since. We, her friends, were with them all, and it was a heartrending night. So I can see understand how Barley would feel. That reaction and emotion comes from a very real place.
@hiddenechoes
@hiddenechoes 2 года назад
That is such a powerful moment, giving his brother that moment of closure. Also the realization that Barley never would have fought to have that because his only thought is for what is best for Ian and helping him ❤ I felt bad that my older siblings were a little behind on the university track because they stayed home for a few years extra so I wouldn't be left alone with our parents before I was old enough to assume full responsibility for myself. I knew looking out for me took extra years and seeing Barley needing the gap year to rest and have fun, maybe in part due to all that guiding of his brother and looking out for Ian above himself, and others calling him a screw up as a result, that hit home.

My dad died in December of 2019. I watched this with my girlfriend when it came out, not realizing that it was probably dangerous territory. I absolutely lost it when Ian said that, because I didn't get to say goodbye to my dad. I broke down, even now I tear up when I see this scene because I don't even remember the last words I ever said to him. It really is amazing how storytelling can emulate real life some times.

As someone who grew up without a father, and an older brother who immediately took the role of a caring male figure in my life, this movie made me sob like a baby at the end. It's not talked about enough, the older siblings who stepped up when our own parents couldn't. They deserve more recognition.

I relate very heavily with Barley. When my stepdad was on his deathbed and on hospice, I couldn’t face him for more than a few minutes before running out. I left him a simple kiss on the head and “I love you”. I remember just looking at how different he was, how he wasn’t the Gary I knew for years. He was so thin and gasping for air, he was a stranger to me. My bio dad wasn’t very present in my life, so Gary was the dad of my dreams. He was always there for me, listened to me, took me places, made it a point to be in my life while he was there. To be honest, I still haven’t recovered from his death (he died in 2017). It could also be that his mother and my therapy dog of ten years also passed away within a weeks time (it was a bad week for my family). I think the message that Barley gives is important, and often overlooked because of Ian’s message. The message being that don’t live your life with regrets. If you are given a shot, take it. Don’t let fear hinder your experiences. Barley got his second chance to say goodbye, but people in the real world often don’t.

I feel your pain. I was incredibly closed toy grandma. She was always sick but it was the worst. when I was 17 to 18 when she was in the hospital for a year. I didn't get to go visit much bc the hospital was 2 hours away and I had work and school. One day my mom had my dad bring me, my brother and sister to the hospital bc they had made the decision to like her off life support. They told us not to cry as we went in one at a time to see her so we wouldn't frighten her in her final hours. I only made it to the doorway and couldn't go any further. My grandma was a larger woman and that day she looked like a skeleton and the life was already gone from her eyes. I was afraid to scare her it I was also just afraid of facing her death so I didn't go in. I'm 32 now and it's my biggest regret that I wasn't brave enough to say goodbye and I'll never forgive myself

Often I want to share with people the things that inspire me and touch me and they just don't seem to share the feelings that I do. But you cry at movies the same way I do, and the way I wish I could share with more people in my life. I know a lot of people were left wishing Ian had gotten to meet his father at the end of the story, but the whole point of this movie was that Ian didn't even realize he had an amazing male Role model growing up the entire time, he never noticed that Barley had, without needing to be asked, filled the shoes of their father the best he could even when he himself was a child always looking out for and helping his little brother who he loved so much. Ian realizes this and finds a new appreciation for his brother and gains closure in that way, because he never knew their father, so what he "missed" wasn't actually their father but rather, the idea of having one at all. Barley meanwhile did know their father growing up, and he had regret over never saying goodbye to him before he died which gave him the strength and motivation to never make that same mistake again and to always be brave. So Barley gets closure in the end by being given the chance to finally say goodbye :') I felt like the ending was perfect the way it was and though it was a little bittersweet, it tied things up really nicely.

This movie just hits me hard, i can't watch it without crying. I have an older sister, and our parents are here w us, but i've never had a super good relationship w them. My sister has always been there taking care of me, protecting me, and always supporting and loving me, she's my world, sadly she also has been called "a lost cause" just like Barley. That scene where Ian has flashbacks of his childhood w his brother broke me, because i remembered everything my sister has done for me and how she has always been there when my parents weren't. This movie is beautiful.

This was the last film I saw in theatres before the pandemic lockdown in my province started. I went twice and that scene got me both times. ❤ It was so amazing to see the older brother getting that closure of finally getting to say goodbye. I was looking forward to you seeing it and am so glad you did this one. Sibling bonds are so unique and special, someone who fully gets why you are who you are, your origin story. Close friends who take you as you are without need of back story is beautiful as well, but there's something extra special about all the inside jokes.

This movie really changed my life. I have an older sister and we were always at each other’s throats growing up because I am like Ian and she is like Barley. In Sep 2019, I decided I was done with her and cut her out of my life for the second time that year. To me she was “stupid”. Cut to March 2020, probably a week before quarantine started. I went to watch this movie ready for a father/son movie, but got a sibling movie instead. Seeing ourselves reflected back and hearing Ian call his brother a screwup really affected me and changed my perspective. About two weeks later my sister sent a group text to my parents and me to make sure we were all safe and I reopened that door. I now understand her better and know she is trying her best. We’re just always going to be different.

Underrated gem. Pixar put all their bets to "Soul" that year (and also it was freaking 2020!), So "Onward" has taken much less attention than it deserves :( Bad luck. It has it flaws, like cmon? You abandoned magic while it really could BRING PEOPLE BACK FOR LIFE ?! Hallo ?! ... but the emotional impact is so wholesome and important, that it completely outweight even this blackhole in the middle of plot. Thank you for your reaction, mind and emotion both, it really help to remember some important things.

I think Onward suffered from coming out at the exact wrong time. I saw it with a friend, and while we were having lunch beforehand, we were literally talking about how serious things were getting, kind of in that headspace of, "I was laughing about this two weeks ago, but now I don't know if I should even be out right now." That was my last outing before the lockdown, and as I recall, it had pretty much just come out. And places like that restaurant and the theater were already pretty thin, as people were opting to start staying in, to be safe. If the movie had come out a few months earlier, especially around December, I have to wonder if it would have fared better.

Its sad how severely underrated this movie is compared to Frozen or Encanto, especially considering how this movie got a heart to it. There was no Disney Pixar opener in the copy of this film I watched so I thought this movie was made by Dreamworks, or Illumination. The character design does remind me of those studios' films. The trailer that I watched a long time ago didn't gave away too much and there are some people who thought this is going to be like Coco where the brothers will go to afterlife to meet their dad. I predicted in the beginning of the film that its going to be about the younger brother realizing how important his older brother is than meeting his dad. Even if I did predict it, I didn't expect how the 3rd of the film will be executed. The little brother, Ian, realizes that his brother Barley's dream meeting their dad is a lot more important than his own since Barley had always been his "father figure" to him. It made me cry since I knew a real life brothers like this. A father who was barely there, so the older brother worked so hard to be a good role model to his younger brother in spite of having anxiety, depression and weed addiction. The younger brother developed those problems and even started hanging out with the wrong people but the older brother did everything he can to set his younger brother to the right path. The older brother is a BJJ blackbelt and an MMA fighter, so the younger brother got inspired to follow his older brother's path. The younger brother is now one of the successful UFC fighters, lives a decent life, no scandals, never went to jail even though everyone expects that's where he would end up when he becomes an adult and still have a close relationship with his older brother that he even claims to be "like a dad" to him in one of the interviews.

I didn’t appreciate this movie when it first came out, but after watching it for the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh time … Well, you can say I became obsessed after the third watch.

Contrary to popular consensus, I loved Onward and think it's one of Pixar's best movies; while not being its most most emotional. There are several things about it that either really stood out to me or just plain appealed to me on a personal/emotional level. 1. The whole concept of the modern world destroying the old in favor of what's "new" and "better" really shook me. I'm a bit of an "olde soul" and a traditionalist at heart; so, when I hear of cultures demolishing historical landmarks or disposing of some traditions (ex. people preferring pizza on Thanksgiving instead of turkey) is just...wrong to me. 2. While I DO love the mix of the modern and fantastical elements of this movie, I think things in the old days were a lot more exciting. But once automobiles, planes, the internet and other "technological wonders" were made; all the splendor in the world just...faded away. I mean...why the heck would a centaur, a creature that can outrun a car, want to drive instead of run? 3. The one location in the movie, The Manticore's Tavern, looks so much better near the end of the movie than it did during its intro scene. Taverns with an open fire, storytellers, flagons of your favorite beverages being offered and other such elements are so much better than the...TGI Fridays/Shenanigans style atmosphere the place had. But that's just me

I saw this movie on Disney+ during my father's dying. I don't clearly remember if it was his last days or he was already gone, it was such a blur. My father loved my sisters & I with all he had. But we all had difficult relationships with him. So watching this and thinking of the times I've been a bit of a Barley to my younger sisters? I'm wrecked every time I watch or see a review. 💚🖤💚

What we want isn't what we need and sometime, that comes in a form you didn't realize. The whole movie is about onward from the old life and regret, he didn't need to see his father, he never had a father. That's the point, her mother also moved on as well. The only person who got stuck in the past and regret had a goodbye, that's what he needed. He finally said goodbye.

I cannot watch this movie with you, as when I watched it, it was a punch to the heart. But I stopped by to hit the Like Button, because you are awesome, and this past weekend got a Subscribe from me. Had someone told me It’s Okay to Cry while growing up, it would have made a world of a difference. Keep being awesome

My father passed away when i was 1. I never met him. My big sis was 5. She remembers him. I truly wanted, from the core of my soul wanted the most to meet him. When my sis was teaching me how to ride a bike, it was like the montain scene. I thought she was holding me but she wasn't, and i was going, but at the moment i realized she wasn't with me i crashed lol. I love this movie, he isn't the best but means a lot to me. Sorry for the bad english, im from Brazil.

How to make this movie infinitely better: This is taking place in the MCU. Ned is DMing for Peter Parker and Peter Quill, and after a couple sessions Aunt May joins in for her own side quest.

This movie hits home hard for a lot of people. At first it ends up being one of those generic road trip movies with a fantasy twist. But the ending man... Even though there's technically no blood or death, well, aside from the obvious, but the message of the ending really is both heartbreaking and inspiring...

My mom passed away to cancer four weeks ago. It's been devistating but even more so knowing her grandchildren won't get to finish growing up with her. They're going to miss her.. she was pretty young, only 53, well a well until 53 when she passed...so this movie hits pretty hard regardless..

I thought the title Onward is the basic theme of the story: moving forward. He didn’t have a dad, but he had a brother and his brother was there for him to guide him through life.

Pixar created this Onward world of magic where people forgot of magic. But I like to believe that actually our world is a world of magic back in the ancient times until humans slowly lose that connection…

This movie is really hard for my family because it came out like 2 months after my dad passed. My siblings and I bawled when watching it because it emphasized the feeling of what you would do to get one more chance to see your deceased parent.

Seeing a loved one hooked up to machines is upsetting no matter what your age. I was 18 or so when a grandfather passes from Cancer. My Dad took those that were old enough and wanted to go to see him in the hospital and it was hard to see him laying on the bed surrounded by tubes and machines. I wasn’t close to him. He didn’t really interact with us and mispronounced my name which led to teasing from my oldest sister. But it was hard to see him like that.
