Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz of Onyx spoke to VladTV about how their lives changed after the release of their hit single "Slam," which they said they didn't like the beat when they first heard it. After being inspired by Nirvana to write the song, it took about a week to pull the whole song together.
During the conversation, Fredro and Sticky Fingaz detailed how Onyx was embraced by MTV and how they did the remix to "Slam" with rock group Biohazard. To hear more, including how they quit their barbershop jobs, hit the above clip.

Fuck yeah it was. I was born in '86 so I was just a youngin' but those years were truly golden and that ain't just nostalgia talking there. All of the stuff released in the 90's was I'll, even alot of the shit that was considered to be more on whack side of things were still dope, especially when compared to the apocolyptic wasteland that is contemporary mainstream hip hop.

Slam is the best 90s rap song ever. Back in the day all of us little grunge/alterna kids knew it was inspired by Nirvana & we ate it the fuck up. Nirvana crossed lines just like Onyx did for new fans! Kuddos!

Onyx concerts were the stuff of legends. In the UK, it always ended with police. I think it was Hammersmith (I'm sure it was called The Temple or something) and when we left, there was literally a sea of police vans and cars with blue lights blazing. We were walking past police blazing joints and that couldn't do anything because of whatever was going on, which didn't seem like anything although it might have just seemed that way because we were high. Life in the early 90's was blessed for music.

You can't disrespect the legends and what they brought to the game. It really was a movement. That's what i miss the most in hip hop- originality. These days everyone is riding the same wave,the same beats,same flow,same subjects,same producer,same aesthetics. In the 90's you couldn't sound similar to somebody without getting called out. And I'm a 90's baby,no old dude I just love hip hop and study the shit. Onyx paved the way for DMX, Mystikal, M.O.P, Mobb Deep ,The LOX, Capone n Nore and even Wu Tang. Legends.

Yeah, absolutely, _Slam_ was and is everything. I have so many good memories behind that song. It makes me feel like I'm 7 or 8 all over again. I don't remember liking the rock remixes to the song, but the album version is right up my alley. _Bacdafucup_ defined my life. Just every fiber of my being. I'm tellin' you somethin'. Vladimir, I really hope y'all talk about they second album and why Fredro dissed them shiny suit wearin' brothas on some t.v. show back in the late 90's. I wanna know if they still feel the same.

LEVELL ZARATE I'm from the Mid Atlantic region. I got sooo much shit for listening to rock music. I could be in my room listening to Jimi Hendrix and still hear insults like " he thinks he's White", "culture shock", or my favorite, "turn off that White boy Hillbilly shit". For the first couple of years I his the fact that I liked rock. I would try to share it with close friends but either they dismissed it and me or flat out insult me. When I became an adult, I said "fuck it", I listen to a wide range of genres from J-pop to R&B.

I wonder what happen to the label they formed, "Armee records" and why they never put out the artist they had(All City, Gang Green)?.... Also I remember they tried to start a group called "Yung Onyx" which I think had a few of their nephews or cousins in it. It would have been dope if they had artist from their hood or just New York in general repping thier Madface brand and continuing the legacy instead of running to hollywood and leaving their peoples behind. Lastly, Onyx don't feel the same without Sonny Seeza, he made the cipher complete they need to work out their differences with the brother do another album.
