My brother wrote this song. On the night Gina cut all the dresses shorter. Lots of the judges didn't like that. Tbh .all the contestants thought Gina would win. In the end, didn't matter, went on to be a massive hit. My bro is on stage on the keyboards. Great night.
I hope your brother knows that despite the 8th place what an important moment this was for the contest. The result was a total farce and more or less single-handedly resulted in the televote being introduced the next year.
If you're wondering what those computers are doing on stage, it's because of the rules that all of the lead instruments used in the song have to be on stage. Since the beat is clearly made in a computer, they had to put them there.
This song is why the televote exists. It was by far the most popular going into the contest but when it finished 8th everyone kind of told the juries to go f*ck themselves and thus the Eurovision televote was created.
Gazmeister Wongatron ye definitely you still see that nowadays, like Denmark in 2018 I think it was where they were 3rd last from the juries but got the 4th highest vote from the public
@@Phl0gist0n it came third in a pre-contest playoff that wasn't aired (sorry not sure what the correct terminology is). That's likely the source of the 3rd place rumour.
Thanks, i know in that time i had a cd and this song was on it. I liked the song but i didn't know then that it was a Eurovision song. A discoverd that later on. Yes also in that time we had huge dance hits of our country. Greetings from Belgium.
@@seandomhnallosullivan2544 I am speaking of the 90's. We had many dance hits just not in Eurovision. If we must speak about my country on Eurovision, it's a shame in 2004 we got only 7 points for xandee-one life. Kate Ryan should have been in the final but no juries in that time. We had to wait to 2013 for an up-tempo song to qualify, Roberto with love kills. In 2016 with Laura Tesoro - What's the pressure. We have also Loïc Nottet- Rhythm Inside place 4 and Blanche - City Lights place 4.
The return of high-quality mainstream pop to the contest after too many years of painful dull ballads. The juries, of course, weren't ready, and their out-of-touch stance and improving technology in the East finally permitted the arrival of televoting. One year too late for Gina G though.
My mom used to play this song all the time on the radio during road trips in California. I had no idea it was also a Eurovision gem until a few years ago! ❤❤❤
I remember Mom played this song on the car radio all the time when I was a toddler in Silicon Valley. I was surprised to find out it was a Eurovision masterpiece as well!
In what way? Because Gina G was born in Australia? By that logic Luxembourg '63 was a warm-up run for Greece entering in '74... "Just A Little Bit" was written by Simon Tauber and Steve Rodway, and was produced by Eternal Records - which makes it about as Australian as an un-sandpapered cricket ball.
In that case Canada should get in too, after all Céline Dion who won in 1988 is Canadian! (Actually, in a letter from some Canadian minister to Denmark after the recent end of their Whiskey 'War' over Hans Island they jokingly suggested that since they now had a border with Greenland and thus technically with Europe they should join the ESC. I'd find it funny!)
I can’t imagine listening to this song anymore without those dancers, they top it off completely they’re so in with the rhythm and in with that quick even erratic beat of this song, and the dance moves definitely don’t look easy they make it flow with such synchronicity!
You gotta be kidding. She wasn't able to hit a note and spent the entire performance jumping around the set. Nice song for a night club, but not for this event.
The stories of that night are wild. People walking out of the arena after it became clear Ireland was going win yet again. Gina was the clear favourite, had a song that was already a hit across the continent, yet came in 8th. The EBU knew change was needed and the result saw the birth of the televote age.
No thanks, a live-orchestra might have worked with such a cheecy and simple pop-song, but it would definietly not work with the complexity of the modern songs we see today + it would only make eurovision SO much more expensive, which no one wants, so i'm guessing it wouldn't work at all..
@@poertjt2 What you're saying is mostly nonsense - expect that live music naturally is more expensive than just pushing the play button on a prerecorded track. All music can be played live as long as orchestras or bands are put together the right way and the sound production is good enough.
@@poertjt2 I guess we are ideological opposites. For me music is a living creature, not a strict and polished product. I love the feeling when I see and hear musicians create something in the momen,t when I go to a concert and feel the raw energy of the moment. And that's supposed to be different from a music video or a track. I naturally like studio music as well, but that belongs on audio files, cds or music videos - not on the stage. On stage the music should be live, otherwise it's not really interesting to watch, I think.
The Netherlands had their own go with this one. Kids show Telekids made a Dutch cover with it for use as weekly opener. "Ooh, Ah, Ochtendgymnastiek" (Morning excercise). :)
@@gimpymoo Actually, you can find a higher-res version of the Dutch cover at Forever Telekids on Facebook: m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1747064435592794&id=1443662222599685
First eurovision I ever got to watch all of it .. 1996 I was 11 nearly 12 years old had this on CD and tape freaking loved it and to be fair listening now I still like it haha in 2023
I’m guessing a combination of stuffy, out of date jury members + her poor vocal performance stopped this from ending in the top 3. No doubt, if a televote had been in place back in 1996 it would have done much better than 8th place!
The only juries that gave this decent (6+) points are as follows: 🇲🇹- 6p 🇸🇪- 6p 🇸🇰- 6p 🇭🇷- 7p 🇫🇷- 8p 🇧🇪- 12p 🇵🇹- 12p The United Kingdom received scatter points from the other juries, including no points from EIGHT of them (🇧🇦, 🇫🇮, 🇬🇷, 🇳🇱, 🇳🇴, 🇵🇱, 🇸🇮, 🇪🇸)
@@JeSuisRene it's insane that my country gave them zero points, highschool children all around thr country still get woken up to this song when they go away to camp 🤣🤣
Lol those Power Mac's on stage playing the Yamaha DX7 bass deserve to be in a Eurovision museum. This song also reminds me of the Enterprise from "Star Trek First Contact", which was released the same month as this song.
It just came to mind this is the one the UK loves. We don't (sort of) mind all the other nul points and I'm sorry to Katrina, but this is the one. Short skirt and all - we love you Gina!
The rules at the time required every instrument used on the backing track to appear on stage/in the orchestra. As the song uses computer generated sound, the computers had to appear on stage - even if they are just props.
Oooh aaaah. @ 1:01 she was FLAT..... and a couple of other times (probably why we didnt win). But in fairness I played on stage in a band many times and the stage 'monitors' make hearing your voice difficult at times! GREAT SONG!
Lots of people saying 'this should have won !!' but it's obvious why it didn't. Big vocal fail very exposed in the thin mix. The great thing about Eurovision is no hiding behind autotune and endless re-takes. If you like the song, the official release is better, but she'll never be a great singer.
@@densparker Because without the UK one of the big 5, the smaller countries would be struggling to actually put on the Eurovision, so that's why we bother, the BBC know we will never win again but if a country was unable to host it bet your life they'd call on the BBC to do it.
This is my favourite era of Eurovision as a UK fan. Interesting, modern songs (this in 1996, "Love Shine a Light" in 1997) played fully live, and eye-catching visuals but without the wild over-the-top stuff you get so much these days. We haven't won Eurovision since they stopped using the live orchestra, so maybe I'm biased!
This still turns me on, all of 28 years later! You still hear it all over the place, including Derry Girls when people are entering the party for the Ukrainians. Wonderful. We don't hear Secret Garden much, but maybe that's because we're in the UK.
