It's been TOO long since I've painted on my walls like an actual 6 year old, so it's time to remedy that. My "Too Much" gene noticed some blank spaces around my house and barn that just needed a little spicin' up. Taking some inspo from Scandinavian folk paintings, I got to work filling in those spots!
AYNWHO I hope you enjoy and I'll see you next video for more Making Bullsh*t, hehehe.

The only problem I see with painting your walls is that you inspired me, a person who is not allowed to paint their walls. I live vicariously through you. Please continue painting on walls.

I heard that from different people around the world. In Germany you can paint whatever you want on your walls in a rental. Colour, tapestry or drawing on it. You just have to overpaint it when your moving out or somebody else takes the Appartement like it is and has to paint it white if those people are moving out.

Solid color peel and stick wallpaper is a thing. You can always get some and paint that. (Or, if you want to go cheaper, get a roll and/or large sheets of white paper and paint that, then tape it up.)

I think if you use something like wheat paste, you can lay tapestries or yards of colorful fabric on your white walls. I vaguely remember seeing someone do this but please research if that's right for you.

As a former mural painter I just wanna say yay you!! Couple tips from an old pro: watercolor pencils are your bff, cheesecloth can help age and soften, and the prep you cannot see is what makes it look pro. A quick pic of that wall and a drawing on your iPad will help if you decide if you want to redo it. And what I always said to clients: it’s just paint. We can always paint over it if you hate it

Yes to using the cheesecloth to age with the paint that Rachel used. You can also combine the paint with a glazing medium that can make it more transparent. This is how you can fake a Venetian plaster 😉 at least in color. You can build up layers that way. I used Benjamin Moore & Martin Senour paints for the base coating bc that’s what I had near me. For the decorative art I used Folk Art paints from the craft store. If it’s going in a high use area ( kitchen, kids room, or entry) I used a water based top coat.

@@iamarealhumanperson111 OMG SAME! My sister, my cousin, and I called my aunt at work and asked her if we could paint / clay the playroom ceiling. She said it was us kids’ room, so yes. We were 10 and 12, and it looked HORRIBLE! My aunt’s husband came home and screamed at us. We told him we got permission from our aunt. He didn’t believe us. When my aunt got home, she said she DID give us permission, but she didn’t realize we would cover every inch of the ceiling or that it would look so bad. It caused so much tension between our families. There was another time that “uncle” accused me of trying to turn his son gay by painting his nails. 🙄Thankfully they divorced. ☺

Great work! 🎨 I'm an art conservator and restorer, and I have some tips and tricks concerning wall paintings to help them look "older" or more vintage-looking. Especially with green paint, you always want to use a color that is a bit muted, not so bright and neon-like, as such pigment was not historically available, and it instantly looks very modern. The "whitewash" you did was a great idea because it helps achieve this slightly faded look. I often use the dry brush technique or even a sponge to scatter some thicker, more opaque background paint on the design to mimic chips and losses of color. I also recommend using a very fine brush to clean up the edges and make fine lines. You can free-hand little details with great effect, but in my experience, a tiny brush makes it a whole lot easier. Keep up the good work! 👍

The norwegian art is called rosemåling, and it's... a whole thing. Each area has its' own colors and style, and they've become pretty set in stone over the years. I tried to get into it with my local Sons of Norway, but it's got a lot of rules haha. Specific shapes and colors and flourishes have to be used in specific styles only if you want to be "accurate." Gotta respect the folk historians who carry it on. My little impulsive heart couldn't handle it.
@elisebjerke3976
@elisebjerke3976 6 месяцев назад
To the ones that say you can't do this or this because it's wrong considering the style that's been used so many years ago I say: NO! I don't care, it shall be beautiful by my own standards. And letting people vary their expressions and linetypes to fit them is what's going to bring it into the future(this is also true for the bunad, but people might kill me for saying that). I do know classic rosepainting for my own area, and I've practiced many an hour to make the lines just so. But the works I'm most pleased with and that gets recognition is always the ones where I go beyond and explore the possibilities. The beauty of the artstyle is after all the impulsivity and creativity behind it, not replicating something exact.

In Denmark we call it ‘almuemaling’ or ‘almuestil’ which means folk painting or folk style. Only a few paintors and antique dealers actually do it these days. I love furniture and trinkets painted like this. It’s so beautiful. It was traditionally for the lower classes, so the rich really missed out 😎

I was fortunate as a child that my mom encouraged me to paint on my walls and gently chided me when I painted horses, "Why did you make them so small? You have your whole room?" ❤ Tool suggestions: 1. Paint pens for details 2.Vine charcoal to sketch on walls (or anything else) Just wipe with a cloth to erase. 3. If you sponge on the original paint color over bits and pieces of your trim, it will look like it either peeled or faded off. Thanks for sharing your artistic impulses and talent!!❤❤❤

@@ThinWhiteAxe I make a point of staying out of the shops between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I like to take holidays one at a time, which I realize doesn’t work with retail. Also, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, so I have to resist the holiday mashup that covers back-to-school through Christmas.

I work at a French immersion elementary school and when kids ask to go to the bathroom I sometimes respond with “Oui, you may go wee wee” Most of them laugh but this year the grade 2 kids I have during lunch looked at me like I smelt awful 😅 My jokes just don’t land right with these youngsters anymore.

I too believe that customizing your space makes you happier in said space. I love the creativity you throw into everything you do, whether that be décor or clothing . It just makes me so happy to see you enjoying what you create. Two things: One, I worked at a Toys R Us for 7 years and it made me DESPISE the Christmas season, so I too feel the need to cling to fall for as long as I can. And Two, I know you weren't to worried about knowing, it's just a nifty leaf , but I think that is a Sycamore Leaf, and dear lord is that one massive! Its awesome!

If you really need help to "relax" but still have busy 🐝 bee energy, here are some suggestions: Go to the nail salon Go to a botanical garden: read, walk, knit, crochet, or watch the animals & bugs go by Go on an afternoon hike with a picnic Take a nap with a lofi film score music playing in the back. I hope that helps Rachel 😊

Bathroom and kitchen are spot on. Barn wall by "stone" wall also lovely. I agree that other leafy vine is just too blue for that spot. Needs more yellow/gold/mustard on the leaves, and some warm ivory on the baby's breath, perhaps?

^^^yep! The blue green is clashing with the real living plants. Even adding a dusty sage will help the paint be subtle for that warm sunny spot

I think the problem with the office wall is the green you've used. Maybe a more olive/brown based green would be better. Maybe change the flowers to more burnt orange/gold/copper? Love the feel of each piece though! ❤

I love watching your home decor videos, when we first bought our home I was so worried about what was considered "normal" and made it look so bland and absolutely hated it. Videos like yours have made me realize if I'm going to live in this space I should cater to myself and not what other people like! Now, my husband and I are slowly working one room at a time redoing our house with our fun, colorful, nerdy tastes and it's feeling more and more cozy. Also, my toddler loves your new "spiky light" lol.

My swedish heart absolutly loved this, and the vines in the barn is my favourite. But all of it looks soo fantastic! I love paintings like this, allmogemåleri! My mother painted a bundle of large poppys on a kind of square wooden beam in our kitchen 15 years ago. It still makes me happy seeing it.

I think the best think about video is, and I genuinely mean this in a good way, that your paintings are not 100% symmetrical and perfect. For too long we have been taught that art that's not "perfect" is not worth anything. So when you painted your walls with genuine enthusiasm and loved them the way they were even though they weren't completely symmetrical, it made me feel a lot better about crafting. So thank you for making this video and I really loved those walls!

For the one in your office I think if you match the green with your pothos you'll like it more. It's such a blue toned green that it clashes with the pothos warm-toned green. My favorite is the one surrounding the window. It's so delicate.

Long ago, my mother grabbed a permanent marker off my desk while I was having a panic attack, and wrote out; “one step at a time” on my white wall. Since then, I have seen zero taboo on writing on/painting on walls. I miss my mom like hell but your videos give off her chaotic-good-artist energy. Makes me miss her a little more but in a good way.

Hey Rachel, I think it might help to add more variety in shapes and length of the foliage on the wall you're not fond of if you decide to keep that design. The other option is to go full autumnal on it I think. Maybe even paint pumpkin (or gourd) vines instead of the green foliage and flowers you have now. Maybe ivy seeing as that room is pretty medieval? Or maybe medieval style painted wall borders?

I love the barn. In answer to your question, I am holding on tooth and nail to the last shreds of Fall as tight as I can. I refuse, absolutely refuse, to decorate for Yule until after December 1st, and may wait until the 15th. My Fall decor will remain up until after Thanksgiving. As Kringle said to Harry Dresden, "Not until AFTER Halloween." Even Santa is a bit over the push to move Halloween to September, ignore Thanksgiving, and start Christmas decorating on November 1st. As always Rachel, you've inspired me. I will be painting a tree motif in the room I'm inheriting, as soon as we get everything moved out, and the base color painted. Then it's new carpet and I move everything in.

For your vine motif by the beams, maybe you'd like an ivy vine more? like a deeper green, could even mix in some of your FAV colour, brown lol If you like house-folk art, you should look up Maud Lewis! She was this little old lady (with severe arthritis) from my province who painted everything and it was beautiful! She also inspired a movie about her life, called "Maudie". I've loved her art since I was a little girl, esp "three cats" xD

I REALLY love these garlands. Regarding the one you do not love that much: that whole corner gives me more medieval castle vibes, particularly with those nice, dark beams in contrast to the fresh, white wall. Maybe you could look into some medieval miniature paintings of the more floral variety. And attempt not as much regularity, maybe cover more of the surface, conquer a bit more space. I do not know a whole lot about wall painting, this is just a feeling I have.
