dirteaters 2014 If you keep them together, without removing the hatchlings, the parents will actually begin to control the population. A harsh reality perhaps, but it does work.
love these shrimp...looks like they have much shorter antenna compared to the freshwater neocaridina and caridina. Love those little shrimp larvae! And the feeding frenzy in time lapse was fun. And yes, the macro lens footage was really great to see. Thanks AGAIN Rus!
So cute!!! I just got a pair of Cobra Endler's Guppies and I can't wait to try to breed them. I say try because whenever I want something to breed they don't, and when I don't they do. lol ;) See y'all next decade!!!
Oarfish36 LOL! I know what you mean...I’ve seen that happen with many species. Good luck with those Endlers! I have a sneaking suspicion they will breed for you without much trouble.
Thanks for the gift of pet shrimp 🦐 coverage! I’m glad you chose to spend your time with your family instead of live-streaming. This was more than enough. I never thought I’d be considering keeping pet shrimp as a goal for the coming decade, but these creatures are so magical that that’s where I am. Your channel is the best of the internet. It’s both informative and relaxing. Season’s Greetings and all the best in 2020.
Yvonne Rogers Thank you Yvonne! I greatly appreciate your support. Season’s greetings to you as well! ‘Magical’ is a great way to describe these shrimp, I think you will enjoy them!
Hi! I’ve been wanting isopods for a while now (I’ve researched) and it has recently been brought to my attention that you need a permit to buy out of state :/ It really put a wrench in my plans. In the video you also mentioned you needed to apply for many species and states (like if you don’t apply for Oregon then you can’t buy from that state or if you don’t apply for a certain species then you can’t buy it out of state.) Has the process gotten easier or what? In your livestream you also mentioned that the permit link was on one of Heretic Nature’s video, but it’s been taken down. I was wondering if this law is still running for isopods and if so could you give me the link? Sorry for the many questions but one more: does this law apply to springtails and if not is there a separate law for springtails? Thanks! 😜
UltraBrix Studios Hi, I have now added links in the description of that livestream to the relevant sites. Fortunately you can apply for a permit for most states fairly easily. The law is still in effect as far as I am aware, but there isn’t any such law for springtails that I know of.
Great shots! I got these guys for my classroom after your Opae Ula care video came out. Haven't seen any babies yet, but I was able to acclimate both Caulerpa proliferia and Java moss to 1.012. I'm headed for Kona right now, so hoping to see Opae Ula in the wild. I'll make a video If I see any. I've been on Oahu and Lana'i for the past week and I've seen wild gold dust day geckos, mourning geckos, house geckos and one other very dark gecko. I'm thinking about keeping some geckos in my classroom. Do you think that mourning geckos or Leopard geckos would be better classroom animals? I would want to be incubating eggs for the kids. Perhaps the leopards would be better since the eggs would be easier to candle. Glad to hear your thoughts. Happy new year, Chris
Grassypeak That is great you were able to get Caulerpa prolifera and Java miss acclimated to the salinity if your opae ula aquarium! I hope you see some larvae soon. I miss herping in Hawaii! Glad to hear you have had so much success. I would highly recommend leopard geckos in the classroom, the eggs will be much easier to work with. 👍
Speedo Man just hatch, or culture? If you just want to hatch them, I love this hatchery: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KSBRE7TeB0U.html
I’m glad you posted this because I started my tank and I have some updates and questions. The macroalgae never took off, I finally have some algae growing but there’s also a diatom bloom occurring. I’m nervous to add shrimp with the state of the tank. Would you recommend anything for the diatom bloom or should it resolve on its own? Also should I wait to add shrimp still? Do you have suggestions for ideal growing conditions for the macroalgae? I think it’s shrunk since I purchased it. Merry Christmas and thanks for all of your helpful tips!
Kara Thompson Thank you and Merry Christmas to you! If you have algae growth, even with the diatoms, I would go ahead and add your shrimp, what is your lighting like? For me, the macroalgae seems to do best under fairly bright light. The nutrients the shrimp will introduce may give it a boost as well. A nerite snail would help with the diatom problem, but only if you have another tank to keep the nerite in after it has eaten the diatoms.
Aquarimax Pets thank you 😊. My lighting is not the best. Not sure of exactly what the specs of the lighting is. It was just the standard lighting that comes with the aquarium. i have a top fin engage 5 gallon aquarium. It’s a 12 inch strip of white led lighting. I don’t think I mind the diatoms, it’s not pretty to look at but I was hoping it will go away on its own. I’ve got 12 Malaysian trumpet snails in the tank and they don’t seem to have made a dent in the problem, so I would be open to trying a nerite, I already have some although they’ve been kept in mostly freshwater conditions. I didn’t realize the macroalgae was so slow growing so I suppose I just have to have more patience. I plan to introduce some shrimp in the next month or two, I’ll update then. thanks for the advice, excited to learn of your patron,. I’m not sure how I missed that!
Kara Thompson That lighting should be sufficient for the macroalgae, it may just be need more nutrients before it really takes off. The diatom issue may well disappear on its own eventually, that is ci fairly common as the ecosystem matures. The temporary addition of a nerite could be a quicker way to control it and make some nutrients available to other algae in the aquarium. I have rotated nerites from my freshwater aquariums into my opae ula aquariums before. A drip acclimation process may be all that is needed, but again, time and the addition of your shrimp may address the problem without adding a nerite.
