Open All Hours
Season One, Episode One - 20 Feb. 1976
Stuttering shopkeeper Arkwright, assisted by his much put upon nephew Granville runs the corner shop in a suburb of Doncaster, boasting that it is open all hours. When not pursuing Gladys Emanuel, the district nurse who lives opposite the shop, Arkwright is ever on the look-out to save money, such as buying a load of fire-damaged tinned food. Unfortunately the damage means that all the labels have come off so nobody knows exactly what they are meant to be buying.

I feel that the reason so many Americans love British humour is because by and large its self depreciating , not smug trying to show how smart one is.

A fond remnant of a bygone era when the world still made sense and flowed at a gentler, more gracious pace. I'd happily forgo all my "digital toys" to leave the cesspool of 2023 to go back in live in the 70s and early 80s again.

The sequel series "Still Open All Hours" is just as good as the original, and shows the legacy that Granville follows after the death of his mentor/father, and how he handles his inheriting of the shop. Utter joy, all round, and beats the living daylights out of modern day "comedy" series.

Just bought the DVD boxset so I can re-watch a very funny show. Watched a few on Yesterday (UK TV Channel) last night and I was laughing so much.

I've been watching these episodes over and over for years. I love the sequel still open all hours. My uncle Lawrence ran a very small little grocery store out of an old house much like this setup so it's like a happy little trip to his store. The BBC has said they have not canceled the new series and are working on plans for a 7 series as soon as they can film around the covid-19 virus. Since Granville proposed in the last show I'm really hoping for one more episode at least so we can see him get married to Mavis

What a wonderful actress was Kathy Staff, I just love awful Mrs Bluett, "She showed me the baby last week, I don't think its his, it looks more like him who comes to read the meter" and later Kathy went on to create Nora Batty in "Last of the Summer wine" where are all the wonderful comedians of today ?

I am only 15, but I have grown up watching lots of old comedy with my parents. In fact, I have only about 5 different comedy programs in my collection of DVDs from the last 10 years. Most of the comedy I find funny is no less than 10 years old. My mum and dad convinced me to try this program out when I was about 8, because I really enjoyed David Jason in Only Fools And Horses. It was the first time I ever watched Ronnie Barker. They were both legends, as was Linda Baron. And 7 years later, I think this is my favourite comedy of all time. Also, I’m not sure what happened at 18:59, but I’m not sure if I want to know.
